      makes it easier to listen to a song and be able to play it without having to look up the chords

      I recently just listened to a song I really liked in anime and there was no sheet music. So I had to learn by my ears. It's really helpful if you have singing as a hobby.

      I often compare it to the difference between reading a book word by word instead of letter by letter. Understanding the chords you're playing helps you learn a piece faster by grouping the notes together as one unit, the way letters are grouped together to form words. Once you understand chords well, you can learn pieces (pop, jazz or classical) incredibly fast!
