    I could be wrong but I think sus is short for suspended not sustained.

      That's a good point! You might indeed be right; I only hear it ever referred to as the "Sus" chord! In this case I'm using the word "sustained" in the same sense as "suspended"; but indeed, the 4th is functioning as a suspension.
