"No lack of emotional resolution". Dude, yes, yum!! Chord colors. Float away with those sus sounds, and the irony is that its from old church music: a 'religious' sound.. the resolutions tells us that
"everything will be okay" if you 'believe' etc! Your enthousiasme for sound is one of your many gifts!

I agree on the sus2 vs 9. I teach music and often have to tell students they’re not inversions of each other, as you say, the 2nd wants resolution whereas the 9th doesn’t.
If you’re looking for ideas I have one for you which I don’t think you’ve covered, though you’re welcome to use it. It’s only two chords but sounds very nice. It’s actually min11 dropping down a semitone to #11(no 3rd), but the easiest way of viewing it is with slash chords:
    G / A to Gb aug / Ab
    So,
    A, G, B, D
    Ab, Gb, Bb, D
    Works well in all keys

I always love your videos Noah. As a teacher myself, you always give me a fresh perspective. I had no idea that 9's become 2's when any note is emitted from core 1357. I always thought 2's were referred to when no 7th was present in the chord. It's learning small details that make me excited to watch each new video you post. Also, I am currently taking your Reharm and Resolutions course and it's exactly what I was looking for. Glad to see your platform is popping off, you definitely deserve it. these chords are often written in the books as F/G or Fmaj7/G wether you want it 9 or 13. personally i like to use them a lot in ballads, they're a lighter version of dominant chords! u can also resolve them before going to the first degree if you want to delay.

  • @wojtekstankowski-pianojazz721

Thank you very much for the lesson. Many roads lead to Rome. Personally, I treat Csus4 as superimposing Mixolydian C chord C7 (bottom) with Mixolydian Bb,+4+7 (in the right hand) in the Ionic scale F. Then Gm7 is Doric G. The best example is "Mayden Voyage" by Herbie Hanckock. With the chord D sus4 you can play the scales: Lydian, Doric and the Ionic scale is like a landing pad - mother. The rest are combinations. Greetings 😇

Interesting. One thing I learned is the relation between sus and slash chords. A iiVi from a real book using mainly dominant 7 chords is immediately awful. Nobody plays like that. And even if you don’t have the basic theory about extensions (broken 9ths, eg, Donna Lee) or sus chords, the mind sort of finds them eventually. I saved this video for future reference. The idea of a fold-away piano has blown my mind. Thanks for the lesson

    Great tutorial and application!
When I studied with Ralph Peterson (rip), he tells us whenever we see a 7sus chord, play the maj7 a step below, in first inversion, especially in his songs, so C7sus4 --> Bbmaj7/C. To me, it was also as you said, a sort of "life-changing" moment. Sometimes I also just write in like Bbmaj7/C instead of just C7sus so I can get whoever's playing chords (I sometimes play other instruments) to use that voicing.
    Oh yeah fourths too

What a coincidence coming across this video while i had just started practicing sus 4th and sus 2nd chords a few days ago in their basic 3 note versions (R-4-5 and R-2-5). It had been suggested to me by a friend to familiarize myself with their sound, all inversions, both hands, all keys. I'll get to their chord extensions at some point though these also have a very nice sound. It was interesting that an inverted sus 4th chord not only creates a sus 2nd chord a perfect 4th away, but also a chord in 4ths in it's 2nd inversion!......btw, thanks so much for all the material you share here and in your other videos.
