- For the longest time I thought run commuting to work was only something that other people did. Two months ago I decided to challenge my thinking and the result has been a total game-changer! I can’t understand why I didn’t do this sooner!
This video includes a look at what was holding me back all these years, how I got around it, along with my biggest suggestions for ANYONE considering run commuting themselves.
Just found this channel, been a avid runner for about 10 months now. I have a half marathon coming up in 3 weeks. Sometimes its very hard to relate to the big more elite running channels here on YT being such a new runner. As sometimes i simply have no clue what they are talking about. Thank you for this content, so relatable, easy to understand, and great advice. Keep it up!
Thanks, Dylan! That's why I wanted to do this channel!
Good luck on the Half Marathon Dylan! Start slow and finish 💪
Run commuting was literally life changing for me as well! I am lucky enough to have a shower at work so it was an easier decision for me... but as a person who prefers running in the morning, combining it with my commute allowed me to really increase my mileage without having to get up that much earlier. So I went from someone who struggled to squeeze in a morning 5K, shower at home, and then commute to work... to someone who can do 10 miles on the way in and actually be at my desk earlier! It's how I can run 50-60 miles a week while training for Boston without completely destroying my personal life.
You nailed it, Jason!
Nice one Kori, I’ve cycled to work almost everyday for the last 7-8 years now, and started because like you it just makes sense. I live about 11 miles from work so running would take to long, but cycling doesn’t take much more than driving in! Hope you manage to keep it up over winter 👍💪
Nice, Col! Yes, I definitely plan to keep it up come winter. I'll probably have to do an update video!
I like running to work but I have nowhere to shower 😭 I will run to work if my boss is out of town. I don't mind smelling myself 🤣 I do run home from work a lot. Like you said it save a lot of time!
Running home from work is the best of both worlds IMO. Unfortunately not something I can do 😕
Great idea. Commute in and run home..
Great video Kori, as always. Its not New York but I have made it work in Atlanta. I am an OB/GYN and I work in Atlanta and live around 45 minutes away in the suburbs. My key is to get enough sleep in the evening (it is easy now since I am an empty Nestor) I find if I get to bed by 9 PM I can wake up by 5 AM driving to Atlanta and start running at around 6 AM usually in our or an hour and a half then I go to the gym change get dressed and can be at the office by 8 to 8:30 AM. It is rare for me to run in the evenings although if I get home on time I sometimes go for a walk. But at least for me commuting, running, showering at the gym, into work works best.
Hi Kori - I live in Brooklyn & work in Manhattan…. I’m not sure why everyone seems to be running TO work! I try to run home at least two days a week (anywhere between 1/2 marathon distance and up). Running after work means I have a nice shower waiting for me at home - and possibly a beer 🍺 too. Also I can go fast (for me) or slow as I don’t have time constraints. Don’t have to get up early & am also relatively loosened up as I’m on my feet all day. So try the reverse commute some time!! See you at the marathon in November!!
No question that the commute home is the absolute IDEAL scenario (especially the waiting beer part). I'd do it if I could but I typically work late at night.
living and working in nyc and running between is pretty dreamy mate! nice :D
Totally! I'm super lucky!
That’s so awesome you can do that! Quality of life makes it a no-brainer. As an elementary school teacher, no access to showers & no nearby gym, but I work 3 miles from my home, so I’m not spending a ton of time commuting anyway. Even if I did, hair is a nightmare. Hope your NY training is going well.
Thankfully my hair situation is dry and go 🤣. I could see how that could be an issue for others!
Way to go Kori!!! It adds up - clever commute that’s healthy for a number of reasons
And no "signal issues" 🤣
Great video! Do you ever need to hit more mileage than it takes to get to work? The CEO of The Atlantic, and former Editor-in-Chief of Wired Mag, Nicholas Thompson has been running to work for a few years! He has gotten faster over the years and now holds the record for the 50k in the 45-49 age group!
That's really interesting. There are a lot of high level and creative people that run (which I don't think is an accident). To answer your question, yes! On those days I either adjust my route before or just keep running after arriving at my destination.
I had that idea in my mind, that how I get here. Thats very ubteresting. I might give it a try. Regards from Warsaw, Poland.
It’s about finding solutions!!!!!
Exactly!
Would love to run to work! But I work 24 miles each way from home lol but congrats on your endeavors to work!
Yeah 24 miles seems pretty unreasonable 😬
Kori - I have been watching your videos for a while but this was my absolute favorite! Maybe because I am a already a big proponent of baking exercise into your existing obligations. I bike to work and take the stairs to the 13th floor office. I’m just returning to running after a long Achilles tendon problem, and I excited to try run commuting!
It really has been a game changer for me. Happy to hear you're getting back out there!
Great video, will be trying it out !
Let me know if it works for you! It has definitely been a game changer for me.
Brilliant advice and very funny 😂 thank you!
Your channel is awesome man!
I appreciate that! Thanks!
Such a great idea and when the math works out it’s meant to be! Very smart and will save so much time!
It definitely has! Thanks!
Great thinking Kori! But will those Flamingos on a Booze Cruise hold up in the winter chill? 🤣
Haha, I run outside year round so I'm not worried. There may have to be a followup video though!
@@KoriRuns Looking forward to it! ☃️
Fantastic work! I used to run commute before I started working in London and I loved finding different routes and the time it saved me.
My office is now 35km away from where I live so it’s less feasible although I have run home once! Took me 4 hours 😂
The benefit of showing in the gym is the chance to do some strength training too 👍👍
Great vid Kori 🎉
You're absolutely right about the gym. It's a lot harder to make excuses for not doing strength training when you're literally surrounded by weights and machines 😂
Sounds ideal!! :)
It really has been a game changer for me time wise.
I personnaly use an hybrid setup:
- I go to work by walk / tram (50min - 2.20 EUR)
- come back running
I only switch pants and sweaters (I will wear a running teeshirt under my pull-over /sweater) and keep a pair of shoes in the office (I work in casual clothes)
This allows me to minimise how much things I have to carry back and forth.
I would like to run to work to, but it just adds a lot of new logistical challenges to solve:
> bringing a towel
> do I wear another running teeshirt in the evening if I sweat during my morning run? Or where do I leave my sweaty clothes during the day?
- where do I shower?
> taking a shower on-site could be the best option
> going to a gym > It will add at least 30-45 min to my commute (going there, showering, walking to the office)
that's why the "one leg" run commute that nobody talks about is a very easy solution to implement in my opinion :)
You have everything completely right here! Running home is easier, if you can make it work. Thought I wouldn't completely discount the benefits of "starting your day off on the right foot" with a run before work.
Cool. Informative!
Thanks!
Still running to work? The backpack is my biggest dilemma. I thought about getting a trail running pack to fit my work clothes in.
Yes and still enjoying it! Yes, the right bag is key. Take your time to find one that will really work.
"You don't need a shower just use wet wipes"...NO NO NO! Your face said it all. LOL!
I'm waiting on your strength training update video. How is it going?!
I kind of fell off the wagon 😂. I still try and sneak a little bit in but I haven't been nearly as diligent as I promised myself.
Thought about doing this, but didn't want to risk ruining my running form as a competitive runner by the baggage I'd have to carry to work every day. Having a backpack on just limits my natural running gait that it becomes uncomfortable. Maybe it's just me and could work out for another runner.
Great video!! The shower dilemma is real.
Hahaha 🛁🧼
I'm thinking of considering this. I would help me, and I can shower at work.
If you can shower at work it's even more of a no brainer. Give it a shot!
What backpack do you use? What do you like and not like about it? I just started run commuting (very short distance and I’m very beginner). I don’t have a good solution for days when I have to bring my laptop
I use the Osprey Daylight Plus (and carry a smaller macbook pro). Sometimes I wish the bag was bigger but that would be my only issue.
🎉🎉
Two birds with one stone, why not? Also, I guess this means two showers a day? Never hurts to try something new for a while to see how you like it
I'm a morning shower person (rather than before bed). So I just do my daily shower right before going into the office.
Kori So Fresh, So Clean 🥰
Hahahaha
not everybody is a Guru, some people are only rocket scientists or even worse just old fashioned runners.....
old fashioned runners like me always need recovery time right after a run. So commuting into work never was an option. From time to time i ran back home from work thou
I honestly think running home from work is the best option as there's A LOT less planning involved!
@@KoriRuns for me it was not only the planning and the recovery, but also the mindset. Running was always dear to my heart, and i wanted to put the run in a good place, a place, which showed the way i honor running, so i never squeezed my runs into tight spaces. I rather did not run then felt pressured by having to be done at a certain time. So when i ran home i was able to enjoy the run, i never could have enjoyed a run to the work place,......but that is just me, and i get it, that with little time compromises are made, and to be honest, nobody in my life ever understood my why and my how......unfortunately i always was the crazy one, the lazy one, the stubborn one, the stupid one....and back then i did not have the words to explain
@@justanoldfashionedrunner605 You're actually right about that. There have been some days where I've enjoyed runs less because I can tell I'm going to be late.
