    In the defense of the N1. Yes it always exploded but the explosions where kinda intentional. The USSR had a completely different way of testing their rockets. Instead of building complex test-stands and similar facilities they just put one together let it fly (if it even got of the pad) watched when it exploded fixed the problem let it fly again waited for the explosion and so on. It in typical USSR style the simplest approach.
    For the N1 they actually planned 12 explosions (test flights) before ever getting to the moon or even to Orbit.
    The engineers/scientists who watched the first launch where actually pleasantly surprised that it even got of the pad on first flight. That wasn't how they planned it to be.
    BTW: that's also the reason why the USSR always build two launchpads for each rocket if it exploded on the pad they always could continue testing on the other pad.

      @jkerman5113 Před 4 lety +39

      That 12 planned launches thing is really interesting, where did you read it? Also, it exploded shortly after takeoff on one of the launches and they didn't launch it again for almost a year because of launchpad repairs, why did they wait if there were 2 launchpads?

    I love the Soviet rockets because those designs are actually insane. It probably didn't help that the three most important men in the program hated each other with the heat of rocket exhaust.

    Just a slight warning: The Lowne method of docking only works if the docking ports are in line with the axis of the root parts. There is a bug where off-axis docking ports don't auto-align with target properly.

    your way of docking is literally the first and only time i've used to dock something and that was literally in the tutorial....so everyone else is not very smart for not realising this before you. So you are right, it is the way the devs intended

    Dear Matt,
    the Buran and the Energia rocket were stored in a hanger but the hanger collapsed in 2002 because of bad maintenance killing some workers and destroying both the orbiter and the launcher. PS. watching your videos is why I bought KSP and I love the game. Keep doing what you are doing!!!

    Engines ignite before the previous stage separate - hence the truss decoupler. This saves on pumps and weight by using the accelerating to push the fuel to the engines, where it's needed.
