What if KSP - N1-L3 Soviet Moon Rocket - Making History Up

- What if KSP is my new side Series to Space Race KSP were we will explore failed spacecraft and rockets and concept missions.
The N1 was a super heavy-lift launch vehicle intended to deliver payloads beyond low Earth orbit. Its first stage remains the most powerful rocket stage ever built, but all of the four flown N1 first stages failed and the project was abandoned. Lots of rocket parts were literally converted into animal pens but fortunately lots of its closed cycled engines were saved from scrap and have since been retro fitted into successful launch systems.
Since the N1-L3 was my most requested video and it's the Soviet counterpart of Apollo 11 (which was so my last video) it was a no brainier to start here. I have also not started on the next craft in this series which gives you guys an opportunity to comment which space craft or concept mission you would like to see.
Even though the N1 was a little smaller than the Saturn V this turned out to be my largest single launch craft file ever, being the first to be taller than the VAB.
Do join our discord's research channel if you would like to see what my current project is and how much progress has been made.

Wasn't that two N-1F with new control core was ready after four failure ? So it's 6/10 i guess
Besides the whole “N-1 exploding before getting to space” part, it was accurate.

Wish the Soviets had gotten the N1 working reliably because then there could've been an Apollo-Soyuz test in Lunar orbit and perhaps joint Soviet-American missions.
It is quite a wonder to imagine what the world would have been had the Soviet Union not collapse and invest in it's space program more.
twistedyogert + Avoxion
Frankly America was overly dramatic and paranoid at the pretense of Soviet ICBMs and television at the time made things worse for American families. Anti communism politics really killed any alliances with the Soviet Union. As far as I know the possibility of such an alliance would have allowed America to adjust our policies towards the idea of sharing the wealth as much as we try to share power via democracy, but first we would have to prove that certain things like guns and gas are not necessities in our culture but pleasures that kill anyone’s sense of future by not sharing the world for others, to “steal” other’s rights to this country you could say.
I guess you could also say President Trump is the final wall and pinnacle of those beliefs that certain things which have caused harm to other are nothing more than taken for granted, and in fact are a right. But they’re a Market of Addiction, and the rights are excuses to have something that causes tragedy no matter what happens.
So I guess when America reckons we can love what we really need in our lives, that can allow some aspects of what that alliance would’ve been to come back.

What scares me is the need for a spacewalk transfer between crew module and the lander. Easy enough when the stack was together prior to landing....but getting back when there was no docking??? THAT would be the scariest part of the mission for me.
The original spacecraft would have had a grappling claw, then later models had docking ports but I think even then they intended to EVA across. hence Alexei Leonov was top choice
There would have been docking. A ball would have been on the tipp top of LOK Soyuz, which would fit into one of many holes on a plate on LK.

Thanks :) wanted the use the N1 for some more what if KSP later so keep an eye out.
Make the Sea Dragon next maybe?
Yup I agree a sea dragon would be just the top of all in ksp even if there where and still will be bigger rockets the sea dragon is my favorite.
Hmmm thats big
Launching from the water may be a problem though.
@@Thumbsupurbum but if he makes like a makeshift raft that sinks like a sub it might as well work just decouple and there you go
Fernando Queiroz Popovic I tried making a submarine once in KSP. The underwater physics don't really exist in game, and moving around under water is quite difficult. There's no buoyancy, it's more like Jool's atmosphere or something. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it wouldn't be as straightforward as some may think.
Amazing work. I have never seen a better fully stock N1 rocket in KSP!
Maybe this one :) czcams.com/video/dZyeIqelNWM/video.html

6 stages, 2 space walks and a lunar landing. Wow, that was complicated to say the least.
Это божественно! As always very cool work!
This made my PC almost catch on fire, insane detail.
It was really awesome. Best your replica, as for me
Thanks again mate :)
I saw in the chat replay that you mentioned that the LK and Soyuz should dock, and I'm pretty sure you're right. From memory, they used the Kontakt system, which had no tunnel through the port, so they had to spacewalk.
Yes they would have had a grab like docking mechanism and may have later upgraded to a nice docking port. I figured maybe the first mission may have had to skip the procedure.
Do leave a comment for what you think the next episode should be, if someone has already commented, please leave them a like.
Vodka rocket
First off, amazing Soyuz LOK craft. Love the LK aesthetic as well.
As for the suggestions, an LK-700 would be interesting. Maybe a Von Braun style nuclear Mars mission? EMPIRE? The Ares mission from Voyage would be truly epic. So much never funded...

Why don't we try the sea dragon that would be just amazing to see a spacecraft that was designed long before apollo even started. 😅👍

Спасибо! Продолжай дальше, клёвый контент.
This was really good, the rocket looked fantastic.
I'm not an expert on space flight and no criticism intended, but why did you not dock the lander with the spacecraft in orbit after leaving the Mun? In real life there was a single use docking port which would have been used when the two craft rendezvoused in Lunar orbit, to facilitate the transfer of any samples, etc the returning cosmonaut would have collected for returning to Earth.
As far as I know, and as I've said already, it was only a single use docking system, the act of using it would have smashed it, making it inoperable, which would have been interesting for the crew, hoping that the thing would release when the time to jettison the lander arrived as they prepared to return home.
You may or may not know this, but the Soviet lander may yet make it to the moon, apparently the Chinese have been in talks with Moscow, hoping they will provide them with the plans for the spacecraft.
Like I said though, really great video, you really nailed how the whole Soviet package would have looked.
Well the n1 lander was incased in a fairing not actually docked to the Soyuz
@@BusinessMudkip That is true, but it was also fitted with a very basic docking system so it could link up with the Soyuz when it returned from the surface of the moon. This was probably to keep both vessels stable in relation to each other while the cosmonaut transferred his samples over to the Soyuz before returning home.
I love this rocket, and the possible implications that could have occurred had the soviets landed upon the moon first, A fantastic job!
Nice one mate :D, I made my own last year but never tested it

Н-1 не предполагалось для высадки спускаемого аппарата на поверхность Луны. Н-1 должна была вывести Лунную станцию Салют-1 на орбиту Луны.
Too bad the Soviets abandoned the project It was a good designation of a rocket :(
Nice vid :)
It was because of several launch failures
Abandoning the project was the only reasonable option for the Soviets as N1 was simply never going to work reliably

This mission would be truly amazing! Still not as amazing as Apollo 11 but I could imagine them getting to the moon after Apollo 11, maybe it would be better, maybe we wouldn’t just stop going there. When we had competition after landing there. But now it’s to late we just have to hope that we get back to the moon. But the N1 Rocket is an amazing piece and the stages and how the mission was supposed to go it’s just awesome . Thank you for making this video I was really interested how the mission would actually look like.

Game play reviews uk, or GPRUK, I guess, could u do a video where u launch a rocket that’s a mix of the Saturn 5 and N1 please? It would be stupidly hilarious. Make the lower stage the Saturn 5, the next two stages N 1, the lander would also be N 1, but the faring containing it and the crew medial would be Saturn 5. Please do this. Call it the Saturn N 1.
I really dig these replica vehicles from the series, are they available somewhere as shareables?

Hello there! Wanna some history? I know you don't, so...
One day leader of USSR rocket development Sergei Korolev argued with Valentin (not Valentina) Glushko about who is more important: rocket constructor or rocket engines constructor. And after that argument, Korolev decided not to use this guy's engines. That's why N-1 failed. Then, after his death, Glushko became the lead constructor and made "Energia" rocket (google it), which is now the heaviest Russian rocket ever developed. Interesting case, right?
Wow, you made it so far? Congrats!
Perhaps try to make the Gemini direct assent craft and the LK-700 (edit wrong number 😂)
You should make a short video on the 2009 satellite collision, which happened when a Russian Kosmos satellite and an American Iridium satellite collided above the Arctic Sea.

How do you get it so realistic and working?

how did you do the mun transfer from such a high inclination as a woomerang orbit?
Well if anything how would you do a none inclined orbit if you are pretending the Van Allen is there?
Short answer is set the Mun as the target and do your TLI burn around the ascending/descending nodes. The apex of the orbit will intersect with the mun's orbital plane.
@@GameplayReviewUK hey, thanks for responding! I'm trying to challenge myself in KSP currently, so the tips should help.
How do you get crafts with so many parts to run so smoothly it takes me forever to load them let alone try and get them into orbit at 10 FPS my pc isn’t the greatest but it is still decent in my opinion it just seems to have a very difficult time with KSP
Not all of it was smooth, the faring separation was 1 fps, slowest ever, that part of the video is sped up about 20 times.
It would be extremely dangerous this mission. Very complex and the necessity of riding around the space for two times by the cosmonaut shows insanity and almost a suicide
Shame you didn’t show the building process. Would have liked to make my own
The amount of time this took it would have taken a whole series to show the building process.
I downloaded the file for the n1 but the problem is the rocket is too heavy to liftoff. Im wondering if i could know why.
It shouldn't be too heavy to lift off, but maybe an update since has tweaked some bits, not to worry, the craft has more fuel than required. just remove some fuel from one of the first three stages and should be fine.
What visual mods are you using???
Blyatiful 😢 👏
Stupid
OMG.The unholy rocket!
Did it also blew up on the launch pad about three times?
Belive it or not. Yes it did :)
Only one rocket fell back on the Launch pad. It happened on July 1969, days before the official Apollo 11 manned moon landing attempt. Seconds after the launch the system KROD shut down all of the engines due to a fire on engine NO.8. The rest fell back or exploded before/after the impact on the ground miles away from the launch pads. The fifth and sixth N1 were both ready. At that time they truly believed that it could work. Both of the rockets went under some serious developments and improvements. Unfortunately the programme was abandoned before the scheduled launches.

The first design of LK does not dock, it would latch on with a claw which I didn't add, the second design had a way for the ships to dock properly but would have still needed a spacewalk.

First pick the right spot, tidal locking makes this easy. Then land during the right phase of the moon or mun in this case. If not the right phase at least it will change over the munar month after landing.
@@GameplayReviewUK May I ask what is the right phase then ? Thanks a lot I'm recreating the apollo missions
For the Apollo missions get the date of launch and google phase of moon for that date. Then launch when the mun has the same phase to get the right launch light. Then relaunch earlier than that to get the right light for the moon landing. The phase angle takes longer for the Mun than the Moon so If you do it in one go the light sources will drift too much ;)
