    Great shadows. You're able to see colors I can't, yet your paintings are so realistic. I like to skip to the end of your videos and take a picture of the finished product, and keep it in front of me on another monitor so I can refer to it as I go back to the beginning to watch you build the painting step by step. It' helps me see where you're going. On another note, I see you set up with backpack, easel, etc - but how do you get the wet panels home untouched? you use different sized panels so you must need different sized ways to get them back home.,

    Such a beautiful goal to paint like French impresionists, (their colours were so alive) I think all of their paintings make people feel better. Thank you very much for the tips Michael,

    Yes, that's a very valuable tip: use materials that are good enough to work with and cheap enough to not mind experimenting with.
    That's why I prefer cheap drawing paper over beautiful, luxurious sketchbooks that I almost feel guilty of when using. Much more freedom :)

    Plein air is my passion too. Interesting that you mention you use Winston for white and ultramarine- I assume that’s a financial decision. I watch artists like Turner Vison who also uses student grade because of the quality he squeezes out and uses on his canvas. Something for me to consider as paint keeps going up in price!

      @@chamberlainpaintings Michaels keep blowing out their Artist oils. Just take tonight. Michaels was blowing out their W&N Aritist oil paints. $5 a tube for the small, 15 for the large. So cheaper than Winton. They did the same thing about a year ago. I snagged a large tub of UM. And some small tubes at 3.50. That tube of UM, and I left 3 others on the hanger, was 77 Can. And it was on for 20 Can. Plus they always have a coupon. Before Covid they had one week where the coupon was unlimited purchases, no daily limit of one unit, and 60% off.
      A few months back they blew out all the Oil mixables. That stuff is supposed to be between the WInton and Artist, I haven't tried it yet, but I bought a big bag. I always shied away from it till I realized is oil paint, just oil and pigment. And one can use all the mediums.

    I think you'll like the solvent free gel by Gamblin. I paint indoors and replaced liquin with it. Its a bit thicker than liquin in the bottle but I'm guessing you could add Gamblin's
    solvent-free fluid to the gel and get pretty close to the consistency of liquin.

    Have you seen photographs of Monet where he is painting canvases his height? Those guys used to live in houses in the middle of the countryside (even Van Gogh lived in a rented room in Arles -a few miles from where I live btw-) and they were always outside. Living nearby was useful to carry those canvases.

It helps me to feel like what I do intuitively is correct, even though my approach is different than yours, as it would be. Your videos continue to inspire. I think you have really brought art out in a lot of people. By the comments it would appear many are indebted to you and your willingness to share your work and process. I know I am. I also have been wondering if Alizarin Crimson fades, why use it at all? M. Graham has it (plain Alizarin Crimson), but on their Anthraquinone Red in parenthesis it says (Permanent Alizarin Crimson). I had heard you say on one video that you didn't use it on the final layers, but rather permanent rose (or something.)

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  Před 3 lety +1

      It only really fades in glazes and tints. If you use it full strength in mixes it's rated a strong 2 which is totally acceptable. It's a very special color and none of the permanent alizarins come close. I tried permanent rose for a while, but it's too strong and clean. I like that alizarin is a little dirty.

    • @chamberlainpaintings

      Not sure exactly what you mean, but composition and a convincing feeling of light are what I'm after. My practice has changed in that I paint plein air landscapes/seascapes more than I used to. My methods are similar to how I painted in the beginning, I'm just better at it.

    I have tried all the mediums out there...I just don't understand why artists don't stick with the old tried and true linseed oil for a medium. I've been taught from other artist that it's the best especially for indoors because it's very safe. I've been using it for years and have no problem with it and I find it works as well as any of them. After I Iay in my initial underpainting which is mostly transparent, I find it's dry the next day or I can still work with wet into wet during the painting process. As far as the so called yellowing, I've never noticed it even in paintings I've had for years. I use it sparingly and for the most part I paint straight from the tube...

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  Před 3 lety

      I use large amounts of medium so yellowing could be a problem. Plus, I'm not crazy about the way it makes the paint handle. Gotta go with what works for you!

    • @gshep3151
      @gshep3151 Před 3 lety +1

      @@chamberlainpaintings Oh ya, you're right...you have to work with what's best for you. I have done research on the yellowing and they say that if the painting does yellow, that it's not really noticeable and also the linseed oil today is processed in such a way that it pretty much eliminates that. I use so very little that I'm not worried about. I like the way you paint, keep up the good work and I will keep watching. My best...
