  • For episode 117 of the Flatirons Syndicate Podcast, our guest is Brian aka. 900 BRZ.
    We brought on Brian so that we could talk to him about all of the testing that he and some of the other members of the California BRZ/GT86 community has been doing regarding a potential oil pressure issue with the FA24 BRZ and GT86.
    Brian has done a fairly extensive amount of testing with data-logs of oil pressure data on track. And it seams that these cars don't like right-hand turns.
    We get talk about both the testing that he has done, the results that they have collected, and what his future plans are for testing a solution.
    Thanks for listening and Stay Tuned!
    Here are links to the 2 videos that Brian made logging oil pressure that are discussed in the video:

      Hi Bro, really appreciate you work here! actually I am also a software engineer and has the same interest and passion to solve this issue even though I am EJ owner, can I ask a question how you were able to log those data, what tools and method you use to log you oil pressure and oil temp, more accurately, how you extract those data from the sensor you installed which you can not get those data from ECU obd2.

    • @kiritowow2736
      @kiritowow2736 Před rokem +1

      Also I have couple ideas here probably can help you address the issue, in my opinion instead of trying different 'solutions', we really need to know what is happened in that oil pan, all the 'solution we make is based on the assumption we make, so there are two methods we probably can try. 1. attach a mini camera on the top of the oil pan inside to check what happened when this car is on track. I have seen someone did this to EJ before 2. Try to create an exactly same lower oil pan but transparent using glass or some sort of 3d print materials, and set up a camera underneath the car the see what really happened. All those method is trying to figure out what really happened inside the oil pan, probably you will have better idea on this approach and help us to solve the issue

    I have a latest video that logs oil pressure at VIR. Note: currently the oil pressure transducer is suffering temperature drift, so take all oil pressure with 10 to 15 psi above.

    Tells us a lot about the marketing of this car as a track car and real world testing that Subaru and Toyota should have done. Great job fellas and putting it out for all to see and understand. Dealerships here in Australia seem to know little of it or disregard it as being an issue.

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  Před rokem +1

      I totally agree. Being able to overlay data onto a video so you can really see it in context of what the car is doing is a big deal. One of the best things that we gained with the Standalone in the Pikes Peak car for sure.

    • @900BRZ
      @900BRZ Před rokem +1

      Yeah it would be so nice to have the overlays applied directly in camera. The other thing I’ve thought would be nice is if you could apply the overlays over a transparent background instead of directly on the video. Would make it easier to cut the video down to multiple sizes. For example, if I want to show laps side-by-side, I’m pretty limited to keeping the original aspect ratio unless I’m okay with cropping the gauges.

    • @EddieLepiz
      @EddieLepiz Před rokem +1

      I’m hoping the next Catalyst will have this, literally all they need to do is add datalogging everything else is already there

    So I'm doing autoX this weekend with a new set of grippy RT660 tires...and I'm nervous. Fortunately I usually only exceed 6000rpm at the finish line. Everything is taken in 2'nd gear so turns are going to be down in the 4-5000rpm range. Will oil pressure drop? Probably, but if 900BRZ survived those drops while pushing hard at 7000rpm then it certainly has a decent chance of being perfectly fine. I'll definitely be over-filling by half a quart just for good measure.

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  Před rokem

      I think that most likely you will be just fine. As discussed at the end of the video, if you shift around 6,000 rpm, that should keep you out of trouble as well.
      Have fun out there!

    In New Zealand we have a one make race series based on the Toyota GR 86.One of the track’s,Hampton Downs is notorious for killing Subaru engines.I have never seen one of these cars retired through engine failure?This series started in 2013 based on the Toyota GR 86 built in NZ called the TR 86.Very close,scrappy racing with some driver’s coming from overseas to race.

      @@FlatironsTuning The NZ 86 TR series was based on the 2.0 L versions.This will probably change over to the new 86 2.4 L.Australia has already started using the new 86 2.4 L with oil,bearing issues and will most likely use a dry sump for the series.I wouldn’t be surprised if Toyota GR have rolled out this series to America and other countries.

  • @rockcrawlerchurch2976

    Just a theory, could it be the rotation of the engine, splashing the oil around above 6000rpm is creating movement away from the pickup that on right hand turns is creating the shift? Or a cavitation of the oil pump at those speeds and the inertia change magnifies it?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the post. Those are both good ideas. I'd say that it is also possible that it is related to the draw from the oil pump at the higher rpm as well.
      Hopefully we will have a clearer picture of the problem soon with all the people that are now collecting data on the issue.
      Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

    Honestly I cant think of another car oem which has had the same issue with their cars since the 90's and has done nothing about it ! 🤷‍♂️😂 Subaru please listen... Your sumps do not hold enough volume of oil and are poorly baffled and your using too much RTV on the gaskets !

  • @daveearnshaw6874
    @daveearnshaw6874 Před rokem +1

    Toyota with the promise of the GR Yaris/Corolla engine possibly in the future with the 86 will solve this problem.Porsche use an integral dry sump system on there later cars.Cheaper for a manufacturer to use an engine already in production.

    I'd love a GR86 with the G16E-GTS, in the Morizo state of tune, as well as the brakes off of the GR-Y & GR-C, upgraded dampers & larger sway bars (or at least the Subaru-sourced Brembos & Sachs dampers off of the 2024 "performance pack" trim). Essentially give me the Toyota GR86 Track mule with full interior & no scaffolding/roll cage. I would pay the, what I'd estimate to be, 36-38k for it too, so it can slot as the top trim GR86, but still slot under the Supra as to not step on it's Bavarian toes (assuming it was essentially a premium/10AE trim with the mechanical bits I want, and I could get Neptune blue/blue flame/voodoo blue/Grecian Water... why does Toyota/Lexus have so many names for the same damn color?). I'm 40, I don't have time to build and/or modify a car, I want to buy and drive a car, but the current offerings are either lightweight and underpowered (miata, gr86/brz) or have a good amount of power, but are very freaking heavy and/or expensive (Mustang, Camaro, M2), or are a Porsche 911... that starts near 6-figures... If the IS500 came with a manual I'd have one of those, or if the CT4V-Blackwing came with an LT-1 or LT-6 w/manual I'd have one of those and just accept the weight penalty as it could be my "all in one" car, right now I have an IS350 F-sport RWD that is my daily and I'm looking for a fun 2+2 toy so I can take my wife & kids with me, if it doesn't have four seats, I may as well just get a motorcycle again.
