  • Prepare yourself! ...for the other Mortal Kombat movie from 1995... that nobody wanted! On this episode of Cinemassacre Rental Reviews the guys Test Their Might against Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins. It's a 3D and 2D animated movie that came out before the live action film. It was supposed to be a tie-in for the movie, but doesn't make any sense and looks like garbage. The 3D animated Reptile in the real movie looks better.

Everything from the opening to the framing of the scenes is nostalgic, and everyone on every episode is a lot of fun and very knowledgeable, it really conjures up the "movie buff working in a crappy rental store in a strip mall on a creepy side street" feeling, the type of place you'd go just to browse and chat movies after school but you'd never suggest to your friends cuz of the part of town it's in.

16:20 not only the 3d scenes were ok for the time, but they are the only things adding backstory to the characters, making this somewhat worth if you wanna see what the creators came up with for these characters.
The 2D scenes are just a retelling of the characters going to the island, something we've seen a lot of times.

I bought this right before the Mortal Kombat movie came out in theaters. My Dad got it for me in Target or something. I was so excited for the movie and this was meant to get you even more excited/give you an appetizer. I loved it when I was little. I always noticed some of the stupid animations but I didn't think much of it. It's funny hearing them break down just how bad it is. I loved the idea of seeing the game characters come to life, and seeing who would "actually" win if they fought. Kung Lao losing to Goro, SubZero beating Scorpion. I still remember at the end, my Dad being disappointed that there wasn't a final fight. And even then I knew, you had to go watch the movie in order to see that.
