Teesside: can locals and asylum seekers get along?

  • High unemployment and low life expectancy: this is Teesside, once the hub of Britain's steel industry. It's now home to record numbers of asylum seekers - filling homes abandoned by dwindling local communities. Many claimed they'd become targets for abuse - thanks to their red-painted front doors. Now they've been covered over, Assed Baig has returned to Teesside to find out how long term residents and those who've recently arrived are coping in this area of high deprivation.

We emigrated to New Zealand 20 years ago and never regretted it for a second. We lived in Thornaby and now and then, I can look at those places out of curiosity on youtube. I still get that feeling of depression even though many places have been poshed up I can still sense the despair and hopelessness of many people, maybe I,m wrong.. That place bears absolutely no resemblance to the country I grew up in. I still see thousands of people plodding along carrying shopping bags because they havn,t a car and cannot afford bus fare. I took a bus from Thornaby to Stockton and what once cost only a few pence, cost 2 Pounds one way and it was within walking distance! It seems that if you havn,t a car if you live in Thornaby, you,re practically hemmed in by motorways and you,re trapped. I remember thinking twice about going to the corner shop after 6pm because of unsavoury looking teens hanging around in gangs.I We had a young daughter and felt the need to get her away from there altogether and moved as far away from Britain that you can possibly get without heading back.Twice I have been back to visit family. The first time reminded us why we emigrated in the first place, the second was closure. The first thing that happened to us was, all our health greatly improved. Everything improved.

u see guys alot of the comments was like he should have stayed and try to fight
    but talking is easy
specially when u don't know the truth
none of you ever been there
it is not a war against someone or some groups we have people from all over the world fighting in our land .there is no side you can choose . we didn't ask for that or we didn't ask to get our lives destroyed.
for the people who say that why did u choose the uk?
cuz we can speak some english !!
i've already lost 5 years of my life in that war and i don't need to lose another 2 years learning a new language
we don't have enough enerji left to fight all the way from zero
so please guus you should now and understand that we r not here to take your jobs or benefits we were forced to go out and we won't stay in your land for ever we r just visitors ...

That's not the point.....you have all ignored the first international rules of asylum and that is to claim refuge in first safe country you come across, if you ignore first safe country rules then you are no longer asylum seekers and become mere economic migrants who are a nuisance a pain a burden and a slap in the face for UK citizens whom would rather you didn't come here in the first place.........

i live near the fountain in stockton and had a 0h contract so one week id work 60hours and the next 2 weeka id have no work. the council left me homeless 19 weeks until i eventually found a private rent property and you know what, ive never had any benefits but I certainly wouldnt persecute an asylum seeker for living for free next door. people are people and i can only get angry at the government for who they choose to help or not. no one else

This isn't even a story when the headline leaves a question mark. This video is to fit Channels 4's out of touch narrative.
