If you ever go camping again, take some lint from the tumble dryer...it'll start a fire for you every time and takes so quickly.
Vaseline cotton balls or waxed cotton pads also work great for me.
I personally always use a Knight for my first playthrough, but I can understand wanting to use pyromancies early, to each their own, Garnt.

In Canada, in a lot of campings, it is forbiden to take wood in the camping area to protect the wood because even dead trees are essantial for the ecosystem.

Why buy a tent? A $7 polyethelyne tarp paired with paracord has done me well for years. As for fire, try putting vaseline on your cotton balls. The cotton ignites from ferrocerium rod (flint) sparks pretty easily and the vaseline keeps it burning for a good amount of time
My camping buddy is a grandma, while I have a single person tent she has a proper hardy canvas tent that can fit a king bed, not an apartment but quite grand and lovely.

my grandpa used to owned a boat, so every summer we would go to the lake and camp there and in the morning and during the day we would tube, water ski, and other stuff. some of my favorite memories are screaming from stink bugs. fcking terrible but the experiance is great

Not thinking of criticising but please make sure to know whether it's a nature reserve or not before doing so, as quite a few endangered species are dependent on dead standing/fallen trees, dead tree trunks, etc.
I'm aware that I don't know anything about the place you were in nor the law/regulations of Japan, but I rambled on in any case for the nerd and nature enthusiast I am.
Sorry for nagging even if that wasn't the case, but take care not to destroy potential habitats, especially around nature reserves, as those may be important homes for certain species.
