  • News room afrika Xoli Mngambi asked a question to Mpumelelo Phungula that suggest that Mbeki appealed to people in KZN to stop voting on tribal lines. An analysis of what Mr Mbeki actually said disproves this to be a false narrative.

So newsroom africa is giving us misinformation? Wow! Thanks Zam. I have seen some people already on the comments on of some videos accusing Mbeki of being a tribalist because of the impression created by this line of questioning. This reminds me of the propaganda against the same men that he was an aids denialist, when he never once denied aids, a lie strongly believed by many today.

He did not deny aids existence but he was arguing that HIV, the virus, could not cause aids, a syndrome, I was once at UDW where he was making that argument. This was reported correctly many times. In this was he delayed the rollout of ARV's. That's what he is notorious for.

So you agree with me that he was never an aids denier then? I did not dispute any of the issues you raised in your argument, so why raise them when no one was discussing them?

People pretend that there is no tribalism in South Africa. Tribalism is the twin sister or brother of racism. As much as you cannot claim that there is no racism in South Africa, you therefore cannot claim that there is tribalism in South Africa. The South African society is still grappling with racism and while racism kept us busy, we did not even attempt to deal with tribalism. Pretenders that tribalism is dead and was buried in 1994, are just exacerbating this atomic bomb which has the capacity of annihilating the entire South African nation. We know that tribalism is out of fashion, outdated and as such has been replaced by ethnicity. Does it really matter when you would reform tribalism and replace it with ethnicity? Look at this madness - THE ZULU NATION - that went on unabated. How many NATIONS can we have in the unitary South Africa? Countless! Which ethnic group will subscribe to the nation of South Africa, therefore giving up its ethnic identity, when the stateless, army-less and border-less ZULU nation demonstrates it prowess and pride against other ethnic groupings, who might have understood the concept of the South African nation? If it is so easy to jump out of the South African nation and start exalting the nefarious concept of multi-nations in one state. For fairness sake, lets all agree that there exist no nation called South African, so that we all can call ourselves nations uncountable in a given region. Lets borrow from one of the greatest African revolutionary, Samora Machel, our next door neighbour from Mozambique:'The tribe must die in order for it to re-emerge as a nation.'First kill tribalism in South Africa before you celebrate its non-existence.
