The Outer Worlds Spacer's Choice Edition PS5 Review - A Pretty Frustrating Experience

- In conclusion, The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice ends up being a half-baked package that doesn’t really justify its price tag. Whatever miniscule upgrades have been done to the experience don’t really amount to much in the grand scheme of things, and with performance issues galore - Spacer’s Choice isn’t the definitive edition of the game that it clearly wanted to be.
It’s an easy pass for those who have already played through the game and its DLCs. And those who haven’t played it, they might be better off sticking to other better games in the genre.

The DLCs aren't connected to the main story in any meaningful way? Murder on Eridanos may take a backseat to the main story directly, but Peril on Gorgon literally highlights the dark aspects of Adrena-Time and explains how the mauraders were created and widespread throughout the colony, all highlighting the themes and aspects of the primary story about corporate Board greed. Murder on Eridanos also enhances those themes as you unravel more of the whodunnit murder mystery, as you see another corporation's obsessiveness with its product and money over the wellbeing of the colonists.
Who is here because they announced this for PS Plus Extra for Feb 2024? 😂
This game wins in every way except one. I hated having to put my party members into armor and helmets that didn’t match their personalities, or even obfuscated the attire they already had. They all ended up looking like generic robots and it took away from the flavor, particularly when the dialogue and unique personalities from the party is so damn good
i feel like this reviewer secretly works for bethesda. this game is still better than 76.

@@sethmende I don't know what that means kiddo...I do know outer worlds is awesome and the spacers choice edition is the way to play it
Btw guys This was all private division not obsidian
After years of moaning about the Bethesda Creation engine and the constant wining they should use Unreal, reviewers get Outer Worlds and moan that there is poor performance, bugs and that there is no seamless open world.
Lol ironic eh
The biggest difference is in Cinematic Mode not Performance Mode. It has a significant visual overhaul in lighting and shadows that is not present in Performance Mode. But it takes away from the original’s more stylized look as it goes for realism. And while it is definitely a noticable visual change in Cinematic, not so much on Performance Mode, performance is still shaky (similar to Witcher 3’s upgrade), and it feels like Private Division (Obsidian didn’t work on this as this is 2K and PD’s thing as the publisher) just turned on some more advanced UE4 settings and called it a day. I’ve played both versions, XBox and PS5 and Series X’s version has noticably higher visuals, reflections, and other aspects with PS5 retaining a flatter look. So anyone that does want to pick this up and has a choice, I’d go with Series X to be honest. It is a welcome visual upgrade nonetheless and dips aren’t bad enough that VRR can’t smooth them out, but hopefully it gets a few patches and personally it’s been fun to revisit this one. Looking forward to Outer Worlds 2 though when they’ll finally have a real budget and resources. The first game was great, but you can tell was restrained. And I think they can do a lot with it in UE5 with time and money behind it. Still want MS to put them on New Vegas 2 though. Since we’re not getting another Fallout for what, like 15 - 20 years if it has to come after the next Elder Scrolls, so they should be capitalizing at least on spinoffs if not just put Obsidian on Fallout 5. This is why Microsoft has a lot of issues. They aren’t great at managing their studios. But, that is another topic entirely.
They didn't just "turn on some UE4 settings", if you look at things side by side it seems some assets are remade or modified to some extent, doesn't really justify anything but it still seems the developers weren't totally careless. Really I'd like to play the game with the new visual changes but the performance is so god awful on PC from what I've seen it's not remotely worth the money.
I’m on PS5 and this game is absolutely unplayable, dips 24/7, the godrays go through buildings, and at least on PS5 the intro cutscene looks like it’s still in 1080p. The second you’re out of the pod it is VERY apparent that either they refused to optimize this game or couldn’t figure it out and shipped it. I loved this game when it first came out and truly do enjoy the visuals and all that but I wouldn’t recommend anyone buy this game until Pirate Division says ANYTHING about an update or addresses the glaring issues because even on pc people can’t run the thing.
The last thing I want is Microsoft forcing projects. Obisidan is a pretty poor example of Microsoft's studio management issues, 343 would be much better, they've been doing a LOT. Grounded, Pentiment, and Avowed and the outer worlds 2 on the horizon. It hasn't been that long since Microsoft purchased Zenimax and It's IP anyway so they couldn't have worked on it.
If obsidian wants to do a lost Vegas 2 after the outer worlds 2 then I'd love to see it, but if Microsoft is going to force it just for the clout then THAT'S bad studio management. All you'd get is soulless cash grab with obisidan's name slapped on.
@@vullord666 to be clear if you don't realize, Microsoft nor Obsidian have anything to do with this remaster, The Outer Worlds 1 was actually published by a company called Private Division (shockingly: owned by Take-Two lol) and the remaster was developed by a really unknown developer called Virtuos Games.
I've played both versions too and have to disagree; graphics seem pretty much identical! don't know where you're getting flat on PS5 from!
Also, Witcher 3 upgrade is a solid 60fps now 99% of the time after patching. Though I can agree with you on Microsoft's awful management of their studios!
when i first played this i didnt really like it, but instead of thinking it will be “new vegas 2” like many old fans said it would be, i retried it and loved it, i had assumptions it was that not its own thing, after realizing it became one of my favorite games out there
however tho, DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION, private divison literally made this for a cash grab without microsoft or obsidian even helping, wait abd see if they fix it.
03:41 a little occasional lag doesn't bother me, THIS is why I've bought the game today! The load times killed the fun of the original for me and to have a dedicated PS5 version with full support for its SSD is a game changer!
so the ps5 version is worth it then, ive neevr played this game
You’re so right about the load times. I bought the original version for $12 but even on PS5 the load times are long and numerous. It sort of ruins the experience and I’m not sure if I should buy new version now.
@@bizmonkey007they're not Spiderman/first party games level of amazing speed, but it's still much improved over the PS4 BC version!
Pretty comical, how polarizing this game is in these comments. There is no "in-between", gamers either Love it or Hate it. And BOTH extremes are adamant that the other side doesn't know their heads from their asses. Not sure what last game did this to fans... Maybe FO4? I'm expecting Starfield to pretty much have the same effect.
This game was a miss for me. It lacked a crucial charm that was somehow captured by their Fallout game. Likely due to too many streamlined elements and lackluster exploration.
Man this game sucks. I played it on games pass a few weeks ago and it just made me want to play fallout. I really hope they do better for “Avowed”
I really hope Avowed is going to be as good as I think it will be.
Pillars of Eternity + Elder Scrolls is a match made in heaven.
I mean the game was made with only 25m dollar budget and it sold like 5m copies.. NV was made with bigger budget and assets already built.. It's not easy to build a game like FO when you have ZERO of the assets..
@@ktdagoat1289
New Vegas had a smaller budget actually
@@kal-sheiargonianassassinof7980 No duh but they had to build ZERO animations, assets, engine and engine pipeline and besides durability systems didn't have to make ANY systems.. All they had to do was write a good story and piece things together, 20m was their budget on NV, and 10 of it went to marketing.. ToW with 25m 12 years later had to make animations, assets, and systems FROM scratch, add a pipeline to UE to use some of thier older systems.. Market the game, optimize for all platforms it's on, pay for play testers (which back to the ease of NV, Bethesda has a Q&A department established in house), and pay team members to work on it for 4 years..
For anyone like me who dosnt want another review that is exactly the same as their other, skip to the last about minute mark to hear what you actually clicked the video for.
I'm playing it on PC and have had zero issues at all with the game so far. It runs buttery smooth on Ultra setting on my 12700K/3080 system. I did turn motion blur off because no one likes motion blur in anything but racing sims. Not sure why so many people are whining about the updated version.
I loved the original game tbh, but seriously stay away from this version. On ps5 “performance” mode it struggles to make a solid 30 at times. Stay clear seriously.
Love the irony of it all
Not paying for a game I already own
What even 5$ wow your a cheap skate
A bland mediocre one at that. I bought ghost of Tsushima ps5 edition in a heartbeat. This? Lolno
I don't see how publishers can get away with charging for a next gen upgrade that plays exactly the same, has mild graphical updates and actually has more bugs than the original version.
Have the performance issues been patched out since?
I've never had any issue with the game and I've played for over 36 hours
Too me the older version looks cleaner as far as graphics goes vs the newer gen version
They raised the level cap to 99? That’s fuckin overkill.
I personally am excited to play the game, having played it a couple years back.
The complaints of this review or just seem very much directed at high maintenance players.
As an old filthy casual, I’m excited.
You have to pay for this texture pack? 😂
10 bucks if you own the game already.
@@azzart979 Plenty of studios have done this "graphical upgrade" (or glorified framerate unlock as it usually is on consoles) for free. I'm only seeing this charging for an upgrade thing with the scummy publishers (Take2, Sony, Activison).
@@DsgSleazy Sony did a next-gen update for free for the last of us 2 and it was genuinely amazing.
I mean I got it for $10 as an upgrade, but still you expect a better framerate, sp it runs like the Switch Version at launch... but, looks good though ^-^ and I still LOVE the game overall.
I never really liked this game. The first planet is fun. Then it gets really repetitive and your choices don't make much difference, and I used the same gun for the whole game. Everything in the game is there to give the illusion of an in-depth rpg. It was no challenge either. It was a linear shooter pretending to be fallout. It was an okay first attempt, but one of the most overrated games I'd ever played.
My thoughts exactly.
It had a lot of heart but definitely one of the most mediocre disappointing games I’ve ever played in my life. We were straight up bamaboozled
Nailed it BroHahan
Also what you didn't mention amongst your good points, its a talking simulator basically, it's word heavy game with a talking face on your screen 80 percent of the game
Yeah I felt the exact same way about deathloop to.
What other games in the genre ?
Damnnnnnn a 5
OK so I booted up the ps4 version just to compare to my new shiny ps5 version. Wow, took me 10 mins before realising I lost the £5 to a downgrade in frames per second. Deleted, back to the ps4 version that is really very smooth and close to 60fps, and a 'fiver' out of pocket. In fact I feel I been diddled out of money. Nearly every free ps4 to ps5 upgrade is better than this.
When are devs going to realise that solid 60fps beats a 'cinematic' 30 fps mode. What is the most unforgivable thing in this, is that 'performance mode' is WORSE framerate than the 'cinematic mode'. At least that is locked to 30fps and is mostly flawless.
Why oblivion ? Why ? I trusted you to deliver and stumped up money before reading reviews. I'm absolutely gutted, and won't trust again...
Private Division giving Obsidian a black eye by pretending they had anything to do with this version.
Also lol at this clown trashing this game as if it's bad. Guess he knows full well OW 2 is not coming to PS5 so he's taking it out on the game he still can trash.
The gameplay was stiff and rigid as New Vegas so I gave up 10 hours in sadly. Definitely felt like they were using NV as a blueprint/reference and forgot to create fluid and reactive combat mechanics.
Maybe you should play it before you judge it
@@flyingpaladin617 I wish people would do that so many people bitch about games that are even out now for instance Hogwarts legacy
I got a physical copy on PS4 for dirt cheap, and then bought the two DLCs and had a pretty good time with them, but I am very skeptical of this upgrade.
yeah same, game was pretty decent but it isn't as replayable as other games, I done 2 playthroughs and felt like I got more than my monies worth - the stories and dialogue were the highlights, the graphics and gameplay were fine as they were
I seen a video of PS5 dipping into the 30s on performance mode.
Not sure if XSX has same drastic drop but still 40-50s is still awful on that
@@CZcamsCensors What the fuck, lmao. Imagine making some shit that can't perform well on performance mode.
Played this back when it first released on PS4 and it was pretty underwhelming. It felt kinda hollow and like it was missing something. It wasn't terrible. Just not something I thought it was going to be, I guess.
The personalities and dialogue of my party members are where this game really shines, for me. But the quests are incredibly boring, political faction fetch quests, which don’t make me care
@@brassattacks2411 That was my problem with it too. For me games like this live and die on the quality of the quests - I like unpredictability, twists and turns, I want the writers to outsmart me etc. Instead so much of the game is (from what I remember) what you see is what you get. Like the quest with the family of cannibals... I had to roll my eyes with this one hard because it's so damn cliche at this point that when I originally played the game on release, I actually thought that there was going to be some big twist with the story. You think they're cannibals but actually it turns out etc etc... But nope - they are indeed just a family of cannibals.
Thanks Obsidian now it’s time to get to work on Avowed.
The outer worlds, over hyped, terrible AI, lack luster story line, slow arse game play, zero replayability.

Personally thought the game was really good for a first game of a new ip but it does lack replay ability. Hope the sequel improves on it all.
