Funny story: I remember my riding instructor was helping me with my positioning while transitioning from a trot to a canter, (I took a 4 year break from riding as a teen and hopped back into it) and she said pretty much all the things you did!
So while I was cantering, she saw that my knees started to pinch the saddle as I struggled to hold my balance, she then said, “Ok Meg, you gotta ride that horse the same way you would ride your boyfriend !” She then followed up with, “HIPS DONT LIE”
And I was SO taken aback, she was always so serious - I halted and we both started laughing. 😂
But I took that advice - And it WORKED. My positioning improved so much. My Legs were relaxed, core strong and hips-a-movin. 😆
That's some.. uh.. Interesting advice..😅
That is aboslutely amazing it made me laugh 😂😂
O m g 😳😆 stunning guidance, effective rhythm 😏
can you make it more obvious for me? I am riding horse for two years and still bounce on its back:(
As a straight virgin man, this advice doesn't help
your horse is soooo cute and sweet
Thank you! He’s a good boy!
Thank you this is helpful
I have managed to fall off of my horse while he was standing still. Twice.
Really
but like how?
Lol
maybe the gurr (idk how to spell it) was too loose. Check ur gurr next time.
@@emberflicker2517 it’s a girth :)
I was 18, in my second show ever, riding in English Equitation. Problem was, I hadn't had lessons in 5 years, and had NO IDEA what the class even was. I asked a young girl, maybe 10 years old, in the warm up ring, and she filled me in. In we go, and it went pretty well. I was so happy when we finished, I sat there patting his neck and telling him he was a good boy. I hear someone clear their throat next to me, and there's the judge, standing there. He pointed... at the riders, all lined up nice and neat, FACING THE JUDGE AND I. I didn't know about that part! I was so mortified, instead of just going to the end of the line, I rammed my horse right through it and took a spot, trying to melt into the arena dirt. FYI, I didn't win. 😂
Oof, that’s must have been awkward!
You are the one with moxy, I am really proud of you! Way to jump in and ride!
It makes me feel like I can’t ride because I’m little on a big bouncy horse. 16.1 hands, tall for someone who is 4 foot 9 inches, and weak. Then I get yelled at! “Hold yourself in the saddle! Stop bouncing!”
Don’t feel bad! I ride a full-grown horse and I am 4 1/2 inches tall! I don’t know how tall the horses but I know he’s a BIG horse, and for a long time I was bouncing a lot too! Also, I don’t think you’re riding instructor is trying to yell at you I think she’s just yelling so that you can here her/ he.
@@Bailey_28 Thanks! Just a heads up, I don’t have a riding instructor, it’s just my step sisters and my step mom who yell at me. It might be so I can hear them, but I don’t know. Do you have horses of your own, or a family horse?!?! Do you want to keep chatting?
@@Bailey_28 BTW, how old are you?
Sadly I do not have a horse but I ride at a stable, and there’s this one horse that I love so much it’s the big one that I talked about
@@Bailey_28 awesome!! I have 2 horses that live at my house, a gelding named Blade, he is the light brown/orange in my profile pic, and the other one is a mare named Sheza (pronounced Sh-ee-zu, with a short u sound), she is the dark one. Not trying to brag or anything!!
One of my not so finest moments was when I went on a trail ride and commented on the lead’s horse, saying that I love dapple grays. When it was a flea bitten gray. We all have moments when our brains don’t work right 😂
Their kinda confusing
I literally was doing everything that you pointed out here as being wrong, my wife, who knows how to ride never told me that, I guess that's why she never told me, it's because she was always in tears laughing at me. Thank you, can't wait to go riding again, you're an awesome teacher.
That’s awful that she was laughing at you
Another idea for staying relaxed: singing a song while riding. It makes sure you have to take deep breaths and it gives a different feeling, fun instead of worrying about your riding. Helped me a lot.
Great video!
I often sing when I am trail riding -- to alert the deer that we are coming --- and to occupy my mind.
Love the way you're so happy...sound like you're going to start laughing any minute..lol love it!!!
My most embarrassing moment was when I was at my show and I totally messed up my corse 😂. I was sooo embarrassed 🙈
:/ man, I almost messed up on the seventh jump
Omg I’ve been taking lessons for 3 years consistently and you just answered so many of my questions that were unanswered. Thank you! I also watch a lot of you tube videos and your one of my favorites now! Please keep making these!!! 💕
Is that right to make your knees relaxed because my coach told me opposite! !
@@Doyadance My instructor told me to pinch with my knees too. I believe more in Carmella because she's actually providing me with a valid reason to relax my knees.
My embarrassing moment was also one of my most fun rides. I was pretty green but rode bareback that day anyway. While cantering on a trail I lost my balance a bit. And I rolled right off the front. 🤣 I wrapped my arms around her neck and held on, so I didn't actually hit the ground. And she stopped, of course. Then I had to get back on. No stirrups. No mounting block. I managed using a small mound of dirt but it wasn't graceful. Lol. That was actually a really fun day.
A big mound of dirt. Ok, creative
@@Bas4364 Yeah, it was either that or walk the horse back to the barn. And I wasn't about to end the fun ride. 🤣
My most embarrassing story: I had a mare that would blow up sometimes right when you got on. One day she did that and my shirt and bra got caught on the saddle horn and ripped....wardrobe malfunction!!!
Nooo! That would be embarrassing 😂
Oh man!
that sucks. I have been in a similar situation except with a hoodie. when i got on my horse before barrel racing practice my mare who freaking spooked when i fell my hood got caught on the horn. Now i dont ride in hoodies.
That’s so inappropriate
@@Chico0007 what did you expect her to do about it?
this is the only person I actually find helpful on this app! honestly I’m so glad I found your channel! you make it so clear and understandable I love it !!
These videos are so incredibly helpful! I’m really grateful for them. Thank you so much!
My most embarrassing riding story was when I was volunteering at the barn a couple of weeks ago. They have several ponies which are used for children's rides, but hadn't been ridden for months because of the lockdown, and needed to be ridden because the pony rides were starting up again. Since I am really small for my age, they picked me. I had never ridden a horse so tiny before and I was bouncing all over the place and looked rediculous, especially around the normal horses! Then at the end of the ride, I had to ride past the little kids camp and the pony decided to use the bathroom of course all the little kids went wild. Although it was really emberassing, especially at the end, I think overall, it was a fun experience and the pony was really sweet.
Awwh hahha! I had a similar experience when I was a pre-teen riding a miniature. The pony felt like I was riding a donkey. I’ve ridden a donkey once too and they are not fun to ride 🤣
I can’t recall whether I fell, but I certainly bounced around the place. It’s embarrassing when you have people watching you
Just started trotting today! This was so helpful! Keep it up!
This was so helpful! Thank you so much. I’ve been struggling with this for a while
My embarrassing moment was when I was mucking out a stall and the horse I whose stall I was mucking out was trying to get the sugar cubes in my pocket and he pushed me over into the wheelbarrow full of muck
Dang
That happened to me before it was so Embarrassing
Your channel is the best!! Not only do you explain yourself well, but we also get to see demonstrations of the dos and donts. Ive learned soooo much. Thank You!!
Thank you so much for making this video, I just started taking horse back riding lessons, and when I was trotting I was bouncing a lot. So this helped me a lot!!
Excellent explanation of the difference between trot seat and canter seat.
Thanks!
I struggle with this so much! Thank for making this video!
Great lesson. You’re such an inspiration. ☺️
Thanks a lot for these advices, i have started taking lessons and your advices make more sense than a lot of wrong instructions i am being given
Well, my riding instructor would tell me to keep the upper body straight, my hips and buttocks loose, but my knees grabbing the saddle. There even was an exercise where she would put leaves under my knees and I had to keep them there for the hour. I have, for years, struggled to achieve and maintain this position - which is really bloody hard! On trail rides, I would usually be more relaxed with my thighs and knees, because I knew the instructor couldn't be watching me and it felt more comfortable.
I came here precisely because I have been having such trouble achieving what I thought was the "good position". And learning I have been trying so hard to do something that is wrong? I could honestly cry.
Btw, I ended up hating horse riding classes and eventually stopped with them, now I only occasionally do a trail ride where no one is shouting at me all the time. (That is also something that doesn't exactly help staying relaxed.)
I dont have any riding stories yet. I started riding a few months ago. your videos are so helpful!
Thank you. I have started taking horsemanship/riding lessons after not riding for 30 yrs. I used to ride a lot when I was younger and it just felt so natural. I have chronic pain issues and now my body fights me when I ride. This week was my first trot and the bouncing was so intense. I did not tense up and kept my form but also didn't move my hips. These videos have really helped me figure out how to use my seat better.
Thank you for the tips! I can't wait to try them.
Thanks ! your videos are very helpful to newbies like me
Thank you so much for the video! I'm 53 and want to ho back to horses. I always knew that I had terrible habits with some terrible instructors in the eighties, bad times! People were mean with the horses, they used to yell and have violent behaviors, I hated that and choose to quit the equestrian sport. But horses are still my passion. Now I'm more mature and confident I want to go back to horses and ride only in a sweet and respectful way! Glad those awful eighties are far from us!
You have a winning personality, informative, humble and kind. Enjoy Watching
Aa I love your videos! I have a bad habit of bouncing, especially in the canter and a sitting trot, so this is going to be very useful.
I'm unsure what's my most embarrassing moment because I have a lot. One of them is definitely falling off at jumping a super easy line (just 3 strides between a crossrail and a very low vertical) because the horse overjumped them both and I just slipped off. My friend also fell off at the same lesson so as I was falling off my instructor was half yelling "oh come on, you've gotta be kidding me". Definitely a super embarrassing fall😂
Awww I bet ahha
Thanks for your support! I always found it embarrassing falling off in front of other people!
Haha it’s kinda funny what the coach said. I fell of an easy cross rail, too
@@CarmellaAbel It's strange, to be honest. It happens to all of us at some point.
I fell off a horse when it was standing still after it panicked at a stable door opening. Like, stayed on while it panicked a bit, but then when it stopped panicking I just slid off. May as well have had that cartoon noise when smth falls idk what it’s called
Great explanation, thank you. I have driving horses and just aquired saddle broke horses so I am learning.
Lots of great information, thank you
This video is so helpful! I was dying laughing though because I did literally every wrong thing you listed at my 1st lesson today.
I've also been struggling with bouncing issues on canter as well as sitting trot. I hope to overcome soon. Thanks
Love love love - great information thanks!
Love your vids...you are a great teacher!
Damn girl this is sooooo helpful. I’m gonna go try this in the afternoon!
Thank you very much for this excellent teaching. I've started volunteering for an Equine Therapy program at Camp Liberty in Marrietta, Illinois. I'm doing extra learning on my own at home to be as helpful as possible. I will share this video with the camp owner, Eric Hughes.
Have enjoyed this video. Have never had problems trotting in the past but am now working with a Percheron that I swear, all four feet are dancing, but they are all doing a different dance. When I'm on top of him at the trot I can't get a feel for what the heck he is doing down there, and to watch me I'm that guy that looks like he's never trotted before. The level of frustration just makes it worse. I think it always helps to hear what we already know as we can tend to get in our own way sometimes. Thanks for such great videos
This was so helpful! Thank you!
My most I’m embarrassing horse story was the first time I got to canter off the lunge line. I almost lost control of the horse because my legs were swinging and my horse was ready to run. Of course I was almost thrown out of the saddle. And the worst part was that I was with a more advanced class so everyone saw it. And my trainer immediately said “Back on the line”
This helped me a lot! Thanks much!
your horse is so pretty and I love your tip because I ride horses and I keep BOUNCING and hunching back
Great tips!! I'll try to remember all of this next time I try to ride a horse again!
Practice makes a person perfect ,so try again & again ,good wishes
This was a really helpful video because my trainer always says sit the trot and then drop you stirrups
I love your videos! I also admire your confidence, I'm trying to get mine back after a 15-year break from riding. It's difficult to get the confidence back when you're an older rider 😞. But I watch as many videos as I can - it helps.
Oof. 15 yrs?! Wow. I wish you luck!
I feel you there! I'm in the same boat!
Exactly
In the same situation except its been 30 years. Getting old really suxks
@@Truth-Be-Told-USA Thanks for the chuckle. 😄😉 My last ride was 30+ years ago too. We can ride at any age. A wonderful women in here late eighties was riding.
Thanks so much for this video!! 🏇
Breath, breathing? Right? I’ve heard from many, when we stop breathing, the horse stops breathing also. Have noodle, sort of body relaxed body, but yet a-line up ear elbow and ankle as best you can? Am I some where close to understanding. Thank you for teaching us!
Yup, your biggest form of safety on a horse is your emotion and demeanor. A lot of people learn to fly when they’re not thinking right on a horse 😂 my husband learned quickly just how big his horse was when he was younger and decided to mess with him and he was intoxicated, my husband said “I deserved it”
Man it's been years since I rode a horse and I can still remember the motions your hips should make just by watching your video! I was doing them in my office chair LOL, what an excellent vid! I guess my most embarrassing moment was when I was very young, I accidentally rolled my pony in the mud! I had to hobble us both back to the barn and explain to my dad I messed up, lol!
Love your presentation. These are tips and things I haven’t heard! Thank you! Where are you located?
Thank you I needed this
My embarrassing moment was when a was riding in the outdoor arena and my coach was talking and I was trying English for the first time and I almost fell of over the horses neck cause I always ride western
Very helpful!
Thank you very helpful
A FABULOUS teacher
Love your vids and my funny story was getting bucked off a Pony that I had called Dusty! At the time I was wearing glasses and was riding out in our paddock in the Fall so all the leaves were on the ground. I fell off and so did my glasses and there I was pawing around trying to find them amongst all the leaves! it tool a few minutes but I finally did!
Very profound and real stuff there
My embarrassing moment is when I kept letting go of the rains in front of the trainer who is training me and then me being Not so smart made them longer so I had No control and then we'll bouncing and the horse just did what it pleased I still have alot to learn myself and this video really helped thanks 🤠😁
Thank you so much. I still struggle with bouncing, I will try to do your trick.
Liked and subscribed! :) Excellent!
So sweet and super funny.
Perfect and fantastic!
Good tips, thanks
Always had a tough time not bouncing on my SPRINGY/UP & DOWN Arabians
i think this is going to be extremely helpful I have a lesson tomorrow and I have no trouble doing the posting trot and canter but it seems that every time i do the sit trot im bouncing all over and nearly falling off. which is my embarrassing story.
Very helpful your video 💞
Thank you so much!!!
Very/ good information!
Thank you such an.informative video
My most embarrassing story was the first time I went to get on my horse I was so excited and I put the wrong foot in the stirrup. My uncle was watching me and asked, "are you going to ride her backwards?" still embarrassing to this day and I haven't done it since.
oops 😂
You should have said "maybe I will" and go ahead and do it. hahaha.
Superb amazing wonderful fascinating interesting beautiful and unbelievable video. Thank you very much for your valuable video.
Than you Mam very informative video it will help me alot in riding class Thank you keep it up
thank you, great video! 😘
very helpful thanks
Thank you for making this video! It's sooooo helpfull!
My most embarrassing moment: I
had just finished my riding lesson and was grooming the horse. Then some beginners came and asked if I could help them put on the bridle for the horse. I said yes, but when I was about to put on the bridle, the horse lifted its head so I could not get it ... It ended up that the ridning teacher had to come and help😳
My girlfriend rides horses and does horse shows I on the other hand am a metal horse rider (motorcycles) but my girlfriend tried to get me to ride one of her horses and it failed miserably. I didn’t know how to steer or control the horse at all. I do help feed and clean stalls and I’m trying to build a connection with the horses to hopefully help somehow but your videos have been helping a lot so thank you
Thanks for your tips once again. I should video tape when I'll be riding with my eyes closed though haha!
Thank u soo mouch
Im a barrel racer for shows known as TCHA, we do flags, barrels, poles, and stuff like that. And during one of my shows i was warming up and i almost fell off my horse when we stopped and we also almost ran into a Clydesdale
I've embarrassed myself on horse back now times than i can count😂😂😂 thanks for the help❤
I can’t wait to get a horse It going to be spoiled and well taken care of I really want a palomino mix with a paint!
@Simply Schleich that pretty cool :D
My embarrassing moment was actually today. Today was my thins class and I was riding on my own. I was doing circles around my trainer while the horse was trotting and I don’t know what I did but the horse decided to walk to the other side of the arena towards the gate. I tried to stop him but it didn’t work. I freaked out and was screaming for help and telling my trainer I wanted to get down but he didn’t let me. He helped me take the horse back to where we were and after I felt safe I just couldn’t stop laughing. I hope I can be more confident in the future
Broh that happens to me a lot with my pony
Funny story- I was riding a pony named Max and I was riding with out a saddle so anyway- another horse was trotting and then max tryed to and I didn’t want him to so I was like pulling on the rains and there was a jump that we were had to walk over and the jump was 1 foot high and so max was tried walking over so he jumped over and didn’t know how to jumped and he of course over jumped and jumped like it was a 2 footed jump but lucky stay on and I am also glad it happen kinda!😂❤️
A couple years ago when I was about 5 or 6 (I'm fourteen now), I was at a summer horse camp. At the end of every camp, they have a mini-show where you get a chance to show off to all the parents. I was walking a horse named Marilyn around in the round pen waiting for my turn, and there were some kids watching from outside of the round pen. I was so desperate to look cool that I asked one of the kids if they'd like to see me trot. The thing is, I wasn't hardly advanced enough to switch gaits without supervision. But I did try 😅So I got her going in a nice, steady trot. For about 3 seconds. Forgetting to STOP KICKING, she went into what must've been a trot/canter type deal, all I remember is screaming for help and my instructor coming over to calm me down. I was deeply embarrassed. Well, there's my story 🤣
Nice!! That brand are your leather riding boots?
This can be very helpful especially to people who have disabilities
My embarrassing moment was: when I was ridding a random horse(horses are my fovorite animals) I didn’t know how to ride one so someone was leading the horse and I told him to make the horse trot, then suddenly I found myself falling. :I
I almost fell off once
thanks
I fell of doing (attempting) a bareback sitting trot for the first time. I landed on my feet though!
3:00 that looks so funny 😁 😂 thanks for your video I don't want to look like that 😅🤭
This one time I lost my stirrup then while I was trying to get it fixed my other stirrup got out and so I had to halt and it was really embarrassing but I got them back and didn’t fall of 🎉😅
Omg, I'm in shock, viewing this video. You know why? Because you just said something that it's completely the opposite of what they teached me at my riding lessons. I've had 9 lessons so far, but from the very beginning, they told me that it's very important to squeeze the saddle with my thighs and knees. Cuz it's gonna be more easy to make those ups and downs when I'm doing jumping trot. It's very hard for me to keep my concentration, doing several things at the same time: squeeze the saddle, sit straight, look forward ect. I find your lessons very interesting, and you explain it so well. Thank you. But, what about this now? I'm so confused...
I’m newly back into riding and all your videos are soo helpful! Thanks for sharing so much good info!!
I was walking at that time I not know center then I axidentilly centered and I fell well almost I was hanging like a swing
can you make a vid called how to train your horse to stand still at a mounting block? btw love your channel
Thank you! You are so cute. I like the way of your teaching.
Not me but my riding instructor, we were hacking with 2 other people and her horse slipped and fell which caused her to fall off, my best friend was also hacking with us and also managed to fall off but she landed on her feet. Meanwhile me and my horse are practically galloping away, overall it was probably my favorite hack ever
Perfect
