  • Haley Wright discusses common misconceptions riders have when learning to trot, and tips to help a rider trot more smoothly on their horse. By putting your heels down, sitting deep in the saddle, not squeezing with your legs, and holding the horn of the saddle like a “car horn” instead of a “bottle” (as needed) you are off to a good start at having an awesome ride.

I’m a new rider and even though my instructors tell me this, you just explained it in a way that the light bulb came on! One problem I have, and only time in the saddle will correct is I get so focused on one thing that I let the other things get away from me.

This was really helpful, I love the tip on pushing the horn rather than grabbing it. Plus, you've totally explained why the horse I've been riding always stops trotting. I keep pushing my pelvis down, which my instructors are reminding me of, and it is probably signaling to him to stop.

The ancestors did it all the time. During the Gallic wars, Caesar and the Romans had to pass through the Alps during the Winter, and they brought horses. You can ride during the Winter, just take it carefully and don't do it for too long.

Keep your heels down and back straight! Also keep your elbows in to your sides, and practice. I always ride my horses bareback, and it lets me feel and follow their movements easier. Let your hips follow his movement, just like when you’re in a walk. Never be a sack of potatoes! :)
