    Absolutely magical! The essence of Lyle Mays' signature patch conjures decades of warmth and memories. Creating a large collection of synth leads with my new NS3; is woefully in need of help. Thanks so much for doing this, Marc.

    Marc, I was very surprised to see the video of how we can recreate the sound of Lyle Mays in the Nord. Infinite thanks for listening to my request and for your good work and professionalism. You are the benchmark for this piano when you really want to get the most out of it. Thank you for your channel and for the love for your followers.
    Musical hugs.

    amazing video as always, personally one of my favorite Pat & Lyle songs. I'm so excited I can play his sound, had no idea it was just a fine-edited square wave. I hear so much woodwind in it.

      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 9 měsíci +1

      @mattpachecomusic Hey Matt, thanks for the comment! Yes, in fact, when it comes to "woodwind sounds" the go-to waveform to start with is the Square Wave (think Clarinet). However, not necessarily true for sax (also a woodwind).

    Hi Marc, still enjoying your videos! I particularly loved this tutorial and will likely add this to my arsenal of sounds on my NS3! The first thing I noticed is it kind of sounds very similar to the sound David Paich used when recording the solo to Toto’s “99”, wonder if he’s a Pat Metheny fan hey?! Hope you are keeping well!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 3 lety +1

      @Steward Paxton Thanks for your comment and observation about Toto's "99" - I hadn't put the two together before but you are so right! In fact, with Toto's version of the sound, it seems that the pitch bend is even more exaggerated - so much so that I wonder if he's actually playing each note with the actual pitch bend controller? In any case, thanks for your comment - it's these kinds of things that keep me curious and hungry to learn more!

      Thanks for your comment and question @Yves LE GUERN You would have to load up a synth in Cubase and adjust it in a similar way as you see me do here in this video. To learn more about the many synth options you have in Cubase, I recommend checking out this video if you're brand new to this world: czcams.com/video/jzK8RM5BgYs/video.html

    Hi Mark, I love that sound! But I have a question: how to adjust it on the STAGE 4?my concern is: since we cannot add a second oscillator and retune it, but I guess we only can add a second OSC in a second layer, and manually detune it…but how I can add a modulated pitch to create this wonderful pitch bend when playing a note, as the 2 oscillators are separated in 2 different layers? Hope I could explain my doubt. Thanks in advance!

    Hey! Listen to "Cable a Tierra" by Fito Paez. It uses a veeery similar sound to Mays, in 1985. Tell me what do you think about it!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před měsícem +1

      @snitzelll3710 Great ears! Yes, I believe the Fito Paez sound is nearly identical to the Lyle Mays sound-absolutely!! Both artists recorded music using that sound during the same timeframe, so it's possible they used the same keyboard model for that sound. It's also possible that keyboardists at that time were inspired by that sound in general-hearing it used on contemporary records of the period. Thanks for sharing this; it was my first time hearing Fito Paez. 👍🎹

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 3 lety +1

      @Miguel Angel Altamirano Lobatón Yes, the name of the song is called *"Highland Aire"* from the album simply titled _Lyle Mays_ (from 1986). The part you are hearing in my video is approx 47 seconds into the beginning of that song. And yes, it's a very sweet melody! I'm glad you asked this question - I had to "Shazam" it myself because I didn't keep track of where I originally ripped it from. Now because of this comment, we'll be able to refer back to it if anyone else asks.

    Any chance to get that sound on an NS2? It seems to lack the fine detune. Any workaround?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 2 lety

      Hello @Dennis Meier. I think you could do it using the option called "dtn" (for dual de-tuneable waveform). You would then assign the mod envelope to the amount of detuning similar to how I dot it on the Stage 3 here. If I had a Stage 2, I would happily demonstrate this. I think if you follow along with your Stage 2, you should be able to get it but start with a classic square and then adjust the configuration to use the "dtn" option on your Stage 2. Then adjust the Osc Control and Mod envelope to taste. It could take several attempts to get it but I believe you can use the video here as a guideline. Additionally, you can go to page 2 of the following post here where a person talks about succeeding in creating the Lyle Mays sound with their Nord Stage 2: www.norduserforum.com/nord-stage-forum-f3/simulate-a-dual-oscillator-synth-with-the-stage-2-t5892.html

    • @gundadennis
      @gundadennis Před 2 lety +1

      @@MyKeysToMusic thanks marc, for the good reply. stage 2 does detune only in semitones, so worthless for the operation. looked at the forum, too. i think just using unison 1 will detune a bit (too much, though). great job, marc. appreciate it.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 2 lety

      @@gundadennis Sorry to hear about that limitation with the Stage 2 and semitones! Fun idea: save up and trade the Stage 2 for a Stage 4. That or pick up a smaller synth to add to your rig for stuff like this - might be fun to learn and experiment with too! (I can find any excuse to get another keyboard around here LOL).

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      Hello! Thanks for the comment and question. I'm not entirely sure I understand your question, but the sound is not coming from the piano engine but the synth engine. This sound was customized to make it sound like Lyle Mays. We start with a basic square waveform and go from there. Ask your question a different way if I'm still not getting the question. Thanks!

    • @Lennon2824
      @Lennon2824 Před rokem +1

      Oh I see I think I know what you mean. I still not fully understand this system haha. Is it possible to use the sound on Nord electro 6D? Thank you for your answer!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem +1

      @@Lennon2824 So, I did a little checking on this. Try loading up the sample called "Lead Square OB8" which means that it's a square waveform from an Oberhiem 8 synth. This is similar to what was used for Lyle Mays. It's a little too bright still and doesn't have the same amount of pitch bend at the start of the note, but it comes form the same family and has some similarities that you'll recognize. That sample may already be loaded on your Electro 6 by the way. You can check out any other "square" lead samples on the Nord keyboards website too if applicable (I haven't checked to see what's available). The Nord website oftentimes has additional samples not already loaded on your Electro.

    • @Lennon2824
      @Lennon2824 Před rokem +1

      @@MyKeysToMusic Wow Thank you for your work!! I just checked and there is "Lead Square OB8" So I can give or change some effects on this sound. Am I right? Thanks a lot!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem +1

      @@Lennon2824 You can add effects to the sound but you won't be able to shape the sound too much. You can add attack amount and release amount but that is about it. Of course, you can add things like reverb and other effects with what comes with the Nord Electro 6 already, but you cannot directly adjust the synth properties of the sampled sound itself.

      Thank you @Luis Flores - You are too kind! In many ways not having a formal paid relationship with a manufacturer allows me to have an independent opinion where I can share candid thoughts without the worry of how that might taint any kind of paid relationship. So, I kind of like that position. But I know exactly what you are saying here and it's a nice thing to say! Thanks again. 👍🏼
