Agreed on all counts. A multi-chapter mini novel. The Prologue. The Pub. The Mum. Lethbridge-Stewart. Mad Jack's campaign. The Epilogue Each one done well.

Of them all, the scene in the Welsh Pub is my favorite by far.
Praise for the episode should also be shared with director Dylan Holmes Williams and DP Sam Care.

I love 73 Yards. It’s like Doctor Who’s equivalent of an episode of The Prisoner.

Found you through a Portico Quartet review, cool to see you're a whovian too! They're not usually two common interests...
Great review for a wonderful episode. I didn't think Boom was one of Moffat's best so 73 Yards makes me excited for the rest of the season.

It was certainly the best of the series & more of a general mystery show. Although I have a few issues with it.
Why did the Doctor vanish but not the TARDIS, and when he did vanish, why did its lock not open?
The Dr (i.e. RTD's writing) said "When he saw the first sunrise man invented God" yet it seems the fairy folk's supernatural powers are real enough? That is, if what caused all the shenanigans was the work of the fairy folk?
I'm guessing that the behaviour of Mr ap Griffith was due to some incarnation or possession by "Mad Jack"?
If all the "watcher" version of old Ruby was saying was a telepathic message to her younger self to watch-out that The Dr doesn't step on the string, why did everyone get all terrified and run off from young Ruby appalled and terrified?
Also, why couldn't young Ruby hear the message the first time and what was all those sign language or modern dance moves that 'watcher' Ruby was doing?
Why couldn't old Ruby make it snow anymore?
I'm sure I will think of more as the week goes on.
We had the boy with the make-up on as a nod to "the only gay in the village" too I think.

The Doctor had locked himself in the TARDIS after he realised he’d revealed the future to Ruby. He saw the woman (the future echo), pretended not to and had to let everything play out. That’s how I read it.

@@TheDarrenLock that doesn't make sense why would the doctor lock himself in the tardis for 60 plus years. Unfortunately once you start looking at the actual storyline of this episode it's all style with no substance or sense. And how long are we going to have the viewers having to believe in fairies and Goblins and all of that nonsense.

Her adopted mother even says it. The TARDIS is locked from the inside. For the Doctor 80 years is a twinkle of the eye. He’s a Time Lord… 🙄 The Watcher character has appeared before in the last story of Tom Baker’s time and acts as a portent of disaster to come and then merges with the Doctor when he dies. Exactly the same thing happens here. It’s sci-fi, it can do whatever it wants and your imagination either follows or it doesn’t. 👍

It was a very engaging episode until the end. And if you watch most reviews they are all going that doesn't make sense. Once you engage your actual brain and critical thinking even if you believe in the whole supernatural fairies nonsense it's still doesn't make sense. How does ruby go back through her own timestream staying 73 yards from herself and why. Why would she deliberately terrify everyone she meets to keep away from her. Did she do it deliberately or was it by accident? The doctor disappears and there is no indication where he goes or if he is even still alive. If the series is just going to be about unexplained magic that makes no sense then it's not for me it's just a waste of time.
Doctor Who is and always should be science fiction not gobbled fantasy nonsense even if it does grab your attention like this episode did it still has to make sense as a story.
Even fairy stories have a moral to them and a reason. This didn't other than was playing on ruby's fear of abandonment. The only message I could get was that we create our own problems. But this is still supposed to be science fiction.
In Kinda we see the state of tegan's mind when she is possessed by the mara all of that makes sense. We see representations of the TARDIS and Adric amd Nyssa. We know the mara taunts her in order to gain control of her body but needs her permission. It's how it comes from the dark places at the inside into reality.
All of that makes perfect sense even though it's done beautifully and scarily.
I'm afraid this episode could have been good but just was seriously under baked with huge plot holes

The same thing happens with the Watcher in the final Tom Baker story. The Watcher is a future echo that acts as a portent of disaster to come. It was triggered when the Doctor accidentally (or maybe even deliberately) reveals ap Gwilliam’s future. That’s how I read it. 🫤
