Oh, so the horror on Kate's face is the thought of what Ruby is going to have to live through. That makes some sense.

Maybe she just put in their heads an image of the future, (like the one Maestro showed The Doctor and Ruby) a world decimated by nuclear war.
It has to be something horrific enough to shock everyone into understanding that only Ruby can fix it, and make sure Mad Jack doesn't destroy the Earth.

I am still unsatisfied with the way they wrapped up that story if 73 yards is just to be a stand alone story. That just makes it even more pointless, was it real? Idk, dosnt matter anyway..moving on la la la. It would be like if the end of turn left had Donna beat the tricksters bug and then the doctor comes in and is like “hey how’s it going?” And Donna just says “ let’s go get some lunch!” And it ends with them going to get fish and chips

Well turn left wasn’t pointless. It was an alternate reality where we got to see what the world without the Doctor was like. It also allowed Rose to get a message to the Doctor. It also served as a prequel to what was coming.

    • @zemoxian
      @zemoxian Před měsícem

I don’t see the episode as pointless. It showcases Ruby’s capabilities without the Doctor. It may have stopped Roger “Mad Jack” ap Gwilliam from coming to power if the locals folklore knowledge is to be believed. Which it may be even if they don’t believe in it.
That game with the salt apparently made myths and legends like bigeneration, goblins, and fairy circles real. Before the game they were just folklore. That’s the way I interpreted what happened.
If that’s the case then perhaps the universe is destabilized and will need adjusting to re-banish the Toymaker’s legions, reduce supernatural occurrences, and perhaps even restore the name of gravity.
Susan Twist was there at the start of “mavity.” She was also there as an ambulance when they met the actor that will be a season 2 companion. Two places that I suspect the Doctor may have to return to at some point. What if he has to return to all the places she’s appeared to sort things out? 🤔

I don't really agree with this interpretation, because it doesn't match up with the events as shown. What does work, is if UNIT's explanation is supposed to be the integral clue, i.e. Ruby is experiencing a "Sliding Doors" alternative reality because of her being in proximity to the TARDIS and also breaking the Fae Circle by opening the letter. A Vanilla Sky like dream world that has her trapped in a delusionary world for a lifetime. Or by accident / Intent.
It really depends if the story explains who set up the Circle, or if the Circle was meant to trap Ruby. Or it's supposed to kill her in a dream, or the dream is malformed and she's trapped. etc.
Because at that point, her reality splits off, and she's being observed, and shadowed. Her reality is very dream-like, but it's also leading her into some strange delusions / rejection. So i'd put it down as a Dream like reality, Sliding Doors mixed with Vanilla Sky, due to the interaction of her 'death".
Mostly because the notion of a Welsh PM being voted in, and buying nukes from pakistan is a fantasy that requires a Vanilla Sky like fantasy world to exist.
There's also a faint, faint notion that the Shadow/Watcher in the story is the TARDIS, keeping her mind linked so that when she "dies" in the circle, her mind is recovered, resurrected at the point of her death to inform her reality as a psychic echo that can travel into the past.
Thing is, that's not very plausible. It only works because the story wasn't told properly, but it does fill in the gaps where the people are horrified, they are 'breaking free' by learning their reality is false. They don't exist outside of this Circle which has trapped Ruby in a bizarre alternative reality. So they aren't fearing Ruby, they're becoming 'woke' in the dream, because they're experiencing reality by interacting with the TARDIS/Shadow.
Still not plausible as to her Mother's hostility/rejection, but it could also be the intent of the Fae Circle to punish those that break it. If so, then she shouldn't have any indicator of being punished in the dream, it should progress until she dies in the dream, sic.IDK. Magic, Happens.

Interesting ideas but i think there must have been some psychic element or something else. I mean the random guy at the pub and Susan Twists character ran away but they had no reason to believe anything old ruby said so I do think there was something else at play.
I've seen people say that this is a nightmare of her fears of abandonment which is interesting. I liked the episode but also left confused. I'm not sure if this is standalone or actually going to be part of something bigger.
Also the doctor mentioning the future shouldn't have caused the timeline to change. It's unclear if the prime minister was always a danger and Ruby just stopped him in this version. The doctor does mwmtion he had nearly started a nuclear war but it didn't look that close in this timeline

@@TheDarrenLock but they would have to have a reason. You don't just run away for the sake of it.
If an old women came up to me and said to ignore someone I knew to save the world I would laugh at them.
If they where able to effect my mind and show me what would happen if I didn't, that would be a different story.
There was something there, doesn't have to be magical, can have a scfi explanation but the point is we won't know as it adds the mystery

The reaction would be different for each person. For the strangers, it’s just the horror of the unknown and that extends to her adopted mother…she has no idea who Ruby is and this shakes her world to its foundation. With Kate, it is horrified guilt because she knows she cannot help Ruby and must stand down and that goes against her very nature.

The concept and your explanation only make sense on paper, however not satisfying with the show delivery of this mechanism called echo self. So let me get it straight, the future old age ruby's echo explain herself and her story to push ppls away from her younger self, ppls reacted with fear of turth, so all running away from her. However, in reality what get me confused is how can she do that in this short amount of time (few mins of conversation?). Not once twice but every single time. Everyone in contact with her echo reacted exactly the same with out questioning the validity and/or seek futher verification from other experts just to be sure. They blindly trust the story and acting fearful then never ever trying to call the police for help... thats the part gets me, inconsistencies overestimate echo's power of persuasion. A random old creepy lady without any superpowers can not pull off what they wanted her to pull off perfectly like show depicted. Many reactions in reality base on fright, freeze and run, ex: disbelieve then tell rudy what they learn, fear then hit echo. The show only show run and avoid aspect, thus very unbelievable surface level rely on coincidence. Force mystery story, otherwise plot armor fit the show. The mystery already solved long ago. There is no reason given that rudy cant know the turthz other than keep the mystery suspense going. Also the timing of when, where, who can see the echo is not consistent as well. Without proper explanation fairytale or not.

@@TheDarrenLock they are trained to a degree but training does not always work. We saw UNIT get possessed in the first 60th special.
The problem is that what would could someone say that would make someone run away that was that short. That could also make strangers do the same and also make her adopted mother run away.
Telling people the world is going and Ruby needs to save it but can't if distracted wouldn't be enough. The guy in the pub would think the old women was crazy.
It's dream logic so it doesn't make sense, that's kind of the point of the episode really, but if we are looking at real possibilities, it wouldn't just be any words, there would have to be something else, a vision of what would happen or something
