  • Played by the outstanding Robert Wolfe on the original 3/13 Wurlitzer theatre organ of the Opera House, Blackpool. To read more about Robert, follow the link www.klmagazine.co.uk/2012/04/t...
    This Wurlitzer organ was the last to be shipped to the UK by the Wurlitzer company.
    It was designed by Horace Finch, and installed in the Opera House, Blackpool, in July 1939.
    It is in two chambers under the stage and speaks out into the orchestra pit. Wurlitzer claimed it to be the finest Wurlitzer installation in the UK, and it remains pretty much unchanged today, with the exception of the Gamba and the Tuba Mirabillis (both were moved to the tower ballroom Wurlitzer organ. The opera house was provided with a new Gamba, and a new Tuba Mirabillis, both replicas of the original). The piano and master xylophone also were moved to the Tower ballroom Wurlitzer. However, since the organ has been in the care of the TCCOC, a master xylophone has been put back on the organ, and a piano has been sourced thanks to the COS.
    Over the years, many organists have played concerts and/or made recordings on this Wurlitzer, including Horace Finch, Reginald Dixon, Watson Holmes, Sidney Torch, Robert Wolfe, Phil Kelsall, Lyn Larsen, and Dennis James to name just a few.
    The ranks are:-
    Tibia Clausa
    Tibia Plena (the only remaining example in the UK)
    Flute
    Gamba
    Gamba Celeste
    Brass Saxophone
    Tuba Horn
    Tuba Mirabillis
    English Horn
    Vox Humana
    Diapason
    Orchestral Oboe
    Krumet
    The video was made using a ZOOM Q3HD for video and a ZOOM H2 Microphone placed over the orchestra pit.

    The phrasing and choice of registration is perfectly chosen for the music of Cole Porter. A lovely performance.

    This man really knows the use of stops, and understands the tonal characteristics and couplings. His dexterity is amazing, I love to watch Him dance with His feet as He plays, He knows how to put on a show as well!

      I don't think Robert teaches, to my knowledge. However, he has inspired a few young organists to take up theatre organ who have either gone on to play professionally or for their own enjoyment.

    What masterful playing, such style and grace and polish, and how wonderful to hear the organ whisper so sweetly at they end. Love it!

    Robert has toured many times in the U.S and Australasia, as well as being resident organist at the Thursford Collection for over 30 years. The organ is still on its original relays and leathers. The only changes made have been a new tuba mirabillis and gamba, both copies of the originals (this was done in the 50s, when the originals were added to the Tower ballroom Wurlitzer, the bechstien piano was also moved to the tower organ). So it still sounds as it did when it was installed in 1939.

    Robert you are super wonderfully I never saw a theatre organist play like you do all you need is a lever to pull back to have the left take off it certainly has enough power.

    I heard Robert play many years ago at Thursford, when he was barely 20 and enjoyed him so much that our family went and heard him play at all the recitals he performed that day. I bought one of his tapes which he autographed after a friendly chat. In 1996, we emigrated to Florida and some years later, I went to hear him play at the Kirk in Dunedin. I took along the old tape and showed him the autograph. He was amazed, remembered our chat so long ago and kindly agreed to autograph it again.

    I have a Lazerdisc recording of this artist and this organ---and it is my favourite. The musician is consumate and this organ is a treasure of authenticity. The UK takes greater care of her theatre organs than the US. We just happily chop up historic instruments and modify them in ways that leave little to remember the original by here in America. We should be more careful and vigilant in preserving the pipe organ in all its forms.

    If you'd like to try one, most places have a Theatre Organ Society. If you're in the US, you can find your local chapter through the American Theatre Organ Society. Areas in the UK usually have Cinema Organ groups too. Get in contact with folks in your local chapter, and they can probably get you some time sitting at a console and trying your hand.

    What a thrilling sound! The organist (I'm new to this guy'splaying) puts fantastic jazzy bits and wonderful flow and effects into this, and the organ sounds grand, everything works so well together!

    Mr. Robert, I heard your perfomance and I like it too much.
    There is a song that you play for 3 minutes and 44 secondos up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds, that I've been going a long time to know the name.
    It's a pretty foxtrott.
    Thank you very much if you tell me the name.
    Thank you very much.

    Wow I didn't realise how greedy the tower ballroom organ was for stealing the pipes and percussions from the Oprea House organ. Are you recording roberts concert in November?

    • @OrganMusicYT
      @OrganMusicYT  Před 6 lety

      Technically they didn't steal anything, as they were all owned by the same company and the ranks were replaced with new ones.

    • @danielmurphy4415
      @danielmurphy4415 Před 6 lety

      How did the Wurlitzer company make new ones I thought that they stopped making theatre organs than?

    • @OrganMusicYT
      @OrganMusicYT  Před 6 lety

      Daniel Murphy they didn't, they were made by a UK firm to the Wurlitzer patterns.

      That just answered my question - I was wondering if the ballroom and opera house were the same or 2 different places. I have a Reginald Dixon recording made in the ballroom - from the Readers Digest set "Organ Memories". It was amazing.
