- This is by far the most trout I've ever caught in one day using the fly rod. We are nymph fishing using indicators to catch rainbow trout sitting in the current breaks of a river.

I just sent my son a text message asking him to teach me how to fly fish. I’ve caught trout on a spinning rod my entire life in Colorado and fly fishing seems so relaxing. Thank for this video, you’ve inspired me to try something new.
Here are some helpful tips...
To avoid spooking fish (wild trout especially), keep the fly off of the water while false-casting. The fly shouldn't touch the water until your final presentation.
Learn the roll cast, it is a very efficient and simple cast that will keep you fishing more and casting less.
Mend line upstream during drifts to reduce drag, in most cases the fly/indicator should be floating ahead of the line as it drifts downstream.
Get some hemostats and put them on a zinger and attach it to your vest/pack. Hemostats will help you unhook the flies a lot easier and help extend the life of your flies by reducing how much you handle them. The zinger will keep your hemostats tethered to your vest/pack in the event you drop them.
Get a thermometer, trout are the most active in water that is in the 50-60 degree range.
During hookset put your rod straight up in the air, that should improve your hook-up ratio. When you swing the rod to the right during hookset, you might be pulling the fly out of their mouth if the water is flowing right to left.
"Foam is the home" Fish the foam lines in the river, bugs get trapped and gather in the foam.
Strap a gopro to your net that way you can get some great POV footage while netting your trophies!

Those Oros indicators are nice. Love the fly content. I'm mostly a warm water fly fisher here in southwest Ohio. You should hook up with Westin Smith, and try bass and carp fishing on the fly.
Nice LFG! I think you would enjoy the fighting experience more on the fly if you set the hook but after you’ve established dominance, reel in your slack so you can fight with drag. It’s a always fun getting drag pulled off your spool!✌🏼

As an official Washington state mountain boy I always enjoyed i light spinng rod/reel with a little rooster tail or a spoon. A very fun way to fish mountain lakes and reservoirs

I have just started last year fly fishing I picked up many different things with casting like rolling the line up stream to allow the nymph to lift in front of the fish. I have used indicators but the trout magnet bobber on tapered leader with a split shot below the bobber then a nymph is a very good trick to catch fish. Love the content great video !

If and when you come out to Colorado, I have a ton of great fly fishing spots and if you are interested let me know because I'd be more than happy to show you some places or send you some coordinates and secret spots that have some pretty big, active, and exotic fish. Other than that seem to be doing good and just keep practicing and learning how to read the waters, that's the biggest thing when it comes to fly fishing.
I have a fly rod that my dad me before i started my channel. I’ve been hesitant trying it out and the only thing is I don’t have line or know what flys to use. I need to stop procrastinating on it. This looks like so much fun.
You need to come fish the Boulder or big horn River in montana I have grown up fishing those rivers and they have been some of the funnest times I have ever had the Yellowstone is also great for walleye small mouth and other species as well you could make 7 videos just in montana on different species. You also should try snag and release for paddle fish on the upper Missouri River in montana
You should come up to Upstate NY in September and get hooked up with a Chinook, or maybe a big steelhead in the spring.
Nymph fishing. Keep the rod tip at water level amd your lite snug so you can tell when you get a light hit. G.
Hey Mr Rackley, if you want to have a more exciting style of bite, try finding some current and swinging a woolly bugger through it. I suggest olive, or white color pattern

I haven’t ever owned a fly rod, but I’ve been eyeing a few of them at a local Flea Market. I think they are each around $80 or $100 used. I think I will try one of them this year. Thanks for the nudge.
You can actually buy a brand new rod for a little over $100 that has a lifetime warranty.
Don’t let the big name brands fool you. You can get into the sport for a $150 combo from cabelas and have just as great of a time as anyone else

Fly fisherman for 30 years. Do you. There's nothing wrong with learning or you will get bored. It's part of the fun.
Keep your rod tip down near the surface of the water. You'll have less slack in the line and have better hook sets and more fish caught.
I don’t know how true it is, but I was told that leaving the plastic on the cork handle of your fly rod is a good way to seal in moisture and ruin it.

Make sure you are holding the fly line with your hand that is holding the rod. You were missing a lot of those bites because you didn’t have a firm pinch on the line with your rod hand, you were having your rod in one hand and line in the other hand.
I thought the limit on trout was 5 in Texas!

Lose the split shot and used weighted Nymphs, also try tying on 2 or 3 nymphs, works well too, if its aloud where you are fishing.

Here's what you're doing wrong. Nothing, you're the greatest
When you fish the current don’t fish directly in it. It’s to much work for trout. They are off to the sides and will dip into the current to feed. Trout are lazy they practically just open their mout and let food fall in. They have keen eyes and if it doesn’t fit into what they eat they won’t look twice at it.
Exactly. Fish the seam because that’s where trout hang out and wait for food.
You should absolutely get rid of that bobber... It will make casting much easier. Just watch the end of you line.
