Your comment about splits for testing a design is really helpful to me. I have been trying to find a 'leather substitute' that is inexpensive and is as thick as leather. I have tried 1/8" neoprene foam as a substitute. It does work but will not keep a fold or seam as you fiddle with it. Thanks Harry!
Your seemingly odd comments off to the side always put each piece into perspective nicely and let me know exactly why I am being shown each leather. Very well done sir. I am definitely a fan of this and other videos. Love your little shop and all your little tips. They really do help. I am a month into making things and am loving every minute of it. Thanks for all the the tips.
Thanks Jeffrey
Crystal clear. Excellent resolution. Oh and by the way, great video.
Thanks Abel I have upgraded the sound, lights and camera, so great that you noticed...thanks again. Rgds Harry
I have learned so much from your videos! Thank you so much for sharing your vast knowledge.
Thanks Douglas
Superb! Every days a school day with you Harry. I’m relatively new to leather craft and your tutorials are proving invaluable. Cheers 🍻
Thanks Pete
I am an somewhat experienced home tanner and have just finished tanning a whole cowhide with oak bark. I think it's almost 40 sq ft so it's quite a chunk of leather. It's quite a time investment (moneywise not so much, haha) and really want to put it to good use so I have really been thinking on how to go about dividing the hide into useful parts for belts etc. But with your great content on leather cuts and quality I feel I now got the sufficient knowledge make this important decisons, so thanks a lot, Harry!
Wow that's impressive
@@harryrogers yeah, and I just finished a homemade strap cutter from beech, so I am cutting straps as I am writing - again using your skillful guidance. If you wanna check out how to make homemade leather look up SkillCult here on youtube, he has got the best content on bark tanning hides. That's how I learned the craft. I am off for making a belt from one of the straps I just cut using your video for guidance. Cheers!
@@somatder Thanks very much 😀
Just what I needed. Thank you.
These are the types of videos that should really help someone who wants to start out.
I get asked all the time just how to choose leather and my answers are always very long.
Noce going Harry.
Thanks Ron.
Seeing that Goat hide has reminded me that I have a suitcase full of those that I bought years ago from a company in Beckenham, they used to have regular sales of leather, I think they were dying samples, but very well priced, I will have to look them out, hidden since we moved.
You could make something interesting from those!
@@harryrogers : With the inspiration from you yes!
Again, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge 🙏
Always welcome
I always enjoy your presentations. Love to learn new things about arts and crafts.
Invaluable information getting started. Cleared up a lot of confusion, thank you
Bring back memories of the time I worked in Holmes Hall Tannery, I worked in the warehouse and the hide yard 👍

Your work room is so beautiful! The cow looks like it might be a bit lame on the back leg 😮😂

I learned a lot from this! Thanks!
Very informative. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent information thanks
That was very interesting, thank you
Very informative...thank you!
Very helpful, Thank you.
so a lot of leather soled shoes where they stamped a "genuine leather" inside the framed logo....that logo is actually the outline of a whole leather piece from an entire cow?
Harry: I have 3 half butts in here.
Me (thinking): Harry is so thorough, he never does anything half assed. Now one and a half assed, that is a different story. lol
Excellent summary. Would you mind if I linked to this from my channel?
That's fine..Thanks.
I found this very interesting. Ive now just realised that the leather I've been given from a local upholsterer is Chrome tanned and not ideal for all my purposes.
What type of leather do you recommend for watch straps and wallets/phone cases?
Veg tan is nice...russet leather is good if you are happy to see all the blemishes and patina build up.....gives character....otherwise go for some veg tan that's dyed...has a finish.
Any advice or comments on oiled or "pull-up" leather?
It's nice for messenger bags.😊
Great video
Thanks
whered u get the gauge? and what were the leather sellers you mentioned? to my knowledge, i think it's roughly .4mm for every ounce, so an 8oz piece of leather would be roughly 3.2mm for example
Gague from Ebay....Metropolitan leather...yes 're thickness sounds about right. Rgds Harry
From where would you recommend getting the leather supply in the UK?
Could I please ask if you could recommend any leather suppliers? I'm new to the craft and have no idea who I can trust to provide me with good quality leather. Thanks.
Take a look at Metropolitan Leather
Hi Harry
Where can I obtain leather strip for binding . Thanks. GH
I am sorry I do not know, but I guess you could split some thicker leather.
Hello, where do you by the thickness measure please?
Hi I got mine from Ebay, searching for...Leather thickness gauge
Fascinating ! Out of interest ( says he not having watched your other, related films yet ) , which parts are used for a pair of boots ? Many thanks !
Various Phil...not that I am any form of expert on boots!
@@harryrogers Thank you for your observation on that - this is going to be a fascinating series to watch - looking forward to it !
Hello Harry, you talked about split leather in this video, I have some Cow hide split upholstery leather approx 1.4 thick, what is the best use for this please?
I used mine for prototyping...as I do not like it....but some people have made bags with it. 🙂
