Harry i have been using that strap cutter for over 35 years and i love it i learned that trick many years ago and it was the best trick i ever learned. Thank you for sharing it with others.
I say a great tool makes the job a lot easier,and does a great job,and great video with great description of the tool,and how it’s used,and tips for when used,and how the tool is very useful,keep more videos coming as they can help many people with their crafting,with another great tool to use
Well Harry. I went and did it made belt and it turned out great after watching your video's it's hard to make a mistake with all the advice you gave . The only thing different is I did not use rivets I just used a double saddle stitch to secure the buckle. After playing around with knife sheaths and some other odds and ends rivets seem to almost always present problems over time . this belt will be used for hunting fishing and camping . I also made it 10 inches longer than need be so it can be worn in winter outside of a jacket . Now my delima is how to secure that large flap securely when not wearing a large coat . Thanks for all the great advice it could not have been done properly with out your help. Now I need to make 2 molded pouches for the back of the belt . Damn almost for got the mistake I made in creasing used a propane torch to heat the creaser I did think of the extreme heat it would generate kept the the creaser 10 inches away and you guessed it it melted like it was bade out of solder it was aTandy so yesterday I ordered a CS Osborne also dug out my alcohol stove from the camping gear so every one can have a good laugh. Great tips! Also, when cutting from a very narrow piece, it can be quite difficult to control, so I clamp the handle in a vice and guide the leather through with two hands for better control. Cheers!

Hi thanks so much - I have been looking everywhere for tips and there are none! I make dog leads/collars and have started to find my strap cutter wavers so I will get it moving away from the straight edge and then I am left with a strap that goes thick and thin as you go down. Any advice how to stop this? My leather is about 2.5-3.5mm thick. Hope you can help thank you
Hi I find the Original Leather Strap Cutter company's wooden strap cutter the best...I have others...they turn up on EBay from time to time. Even pressure in use helps, a gentle push into the leather edge on...keeping the pressure centred inline with the blade.
Hi Harry, thanks for this. I have bought one of these, but unfortunately the leather I use is relatively thin and floppy so not great. Any ideas for cutters straight straps other than just cutting down with a ruler and knife or roller blade? Two straps never end up the same and I have to cut bits off and makes a right mess! Hi Paula...I think you need a lace cutter...the multi bladed type that the likes of Tandy sell to cut several strips of lace at once. You would need to remove most of the blades so you cut one very wide lace...i.e. handle.

Hi it really depends on the firmness of the leather..it fits very firm so you can feed it through then you could cut 1mm thickleather, but if it collapses at the blade because it is soft like a lot of thin leathers then it will not work.

I've seen this exact strap cutter for $26.usd in California,USA..in a leather shop a day ago..I'm sure if you go on Google you could locate one..but beware of the 99% of them available are cheap Chinese knockoffs..the knockoffs are mostly 1/2 the price..but loosen up mid cut making straps wider then the settings..I hear good things about a different style made of metal that has more less a pistol grip handle and a exposed blade..it could be dangerous to use though..

@@probulb Yes probably...there is a cheaper stick lace cutter and videos on CZcams on how to make various types...but the ones you mention are good.

Can this be used on soft hides ?
Hi its not very easy on soft leather, so a Dafa type knife might be better.

Hi Belinda...It's a blade in a frame so yes I guess it can cut something with a degree of rigidity like leather.
