DIY Wood Burning Technique - That's not Shou Sugi Ban! Or is it??
Vložit

- I use this burnt wood finish technique on most (if not all) of my builds. This is a How To get that burnt wood finish or How To stain wood with fire...and stain! There's always an argument over if this technique is true Shou Sugi Ban or not. So, I'll just call it a Torched Wood Finish!!
I get asked a lot how I achieve this look, so I figured I'd make a video showing my process.
Anybody else like to light projects on fire?

What was the name of the last stain you used?
Ryan R the Sunbleached (white) or the Simple Finish (Black can)?
@@BuildDadBuild sunbleached is what I was looking for. Thank you!
Ryan R sure thing. amzn.to/2WddZoe
You are so cool.just found you.watching you from Portugal.just having trouble in finding the products for the finishes.
That’s how you smoke your liver dude!!! :)
My favorite part of this video is where he scrapes the burnt wood onto the driveway, just like most dad's would do.
You can't find too many videos with someone who not only has mastered their craft, but can explain in an efficient and coherent manner so everyone can understand what your doing. Keep up the good work, I'm subscribing.
Thank you. 👍🏻👍🏻
I recently finished a coffee table with doors to work on puzzles. I was inspired to use the Sunbleached stain from this video. I also torched the whole thing and it turned out great. Already sold! Thank you for your videos man! Wouldn't have known of the stain otherwise!
That's awesome!

Absolutely loved that last "sun-bleached" stain. I live on the coast of BC, Canada and I just love finding pieces of sun-bleached driftwood for my art pieces. I'll definitely be looking into getting some of that stuff!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
Had to subscribe , I enjoyed the amount of detail put into your craft.
Thank you! 👍🏻👍🏻
This dude is not only informative but also naturally cool & fun to watch ! chuckles & a smile on my face THATS worth SUB Thanks bro.
Thanks for the sub!
Cheers!
love the grey finish ! I have been a painter most of my life . I got into stripping old houses early on in my career and stayed with that as much as possible.i have worked on houses through out the south and have done houses from 80 - 100 + years old and some with slave quarters still on site . I have striped and restain using all kinds of methods . never have i done any wood burning like this , but always wanting to try new things to improve my skills and this is it . Thanks for the video
Your welcome! 👍🏻👍🏻
Ive watched 2 minutes of this and I just found it trying to build a vise and already I love you haha
Sweet! Welcome to the fray...
Cheers!
👍🥃👍🥃👍🥃
Ok, this REALLY has me wanting to try this...ESPECIALLY the last technique haha.
Ethan Carter that was is the best! 😜😜🥃🥃
I love ur work... I’m learning tons from u... and u r freaking hilarious!! Thank u for your videos!!
Thanks, Brandi!
Cheers
I am learning awesome things from you and I am so grateful! You are funny, fun, and your videos are packed with great info. Hopefully one day I can have a studio with all the cool and useful things you have but for now, I am happy with my mini blow torch experimenting and learning from you! God bless and thank you again for sharing your knowledge and know-how!
You are welcome!
Cheers
I have seen many videos like this, but this was far the most useful one! Sprinkling between burning to prevent cupping, sanding after the wirebrush for richer color etc etc. Nice job! 🎉😊
That 'sun bleached' stain looked really good, may have to try that myself.
It was a total shock to me how well that turned out.
They were all good but that one was something else.
Good info! I have to set more of my projects on fire I think, haha!
+John the Schreiner haha! It's my therapy!!
Yep. You've earned my sub.
I burn nearly all of my projects. One of the recent videos I'm working on has some major cupping... Using water before and between burns? Absolute genius. Thank you so much for that tip.
Sure thing. Thanks for the sub!
I love his enthusiasm, I’ll have to check out your other videos!
Thank you!
I’ve watched many shou sugi ban videos and this is the first I’ve seen anyone use water before and between burns to avoid cupping. Nice tip !!!
And the smoked bourbon at the end!!!
First of all, thank you. And second...smoked whiskey is the BEST!!

I just recently decided to start getting into woodworking and this technique has definitely got my interest! Thanks for the info. You've got my subscription.
Awesome!
Welcome to the Fray, Penelope!
Cheers
I'm doing a wood burn ceiling in our house! This video helped out so much! Thank you
You're welcome!
Sugi (Japanese cypress), the su part is like soo, as opposed to shoe. You'll see this burnt sugi siding on traditional homes because of its excellent resistance to rot. Sugi is a great building material because even prior to burning it resists both pests and water. I've built with both pine and sugi and while pine is a heavier material, it doesn't hold up over time unless pressure treated, when exposed to the elements for years on end. Keep your stick on the ice.
Thanks for the info!
I LOVE your wall!
Just subscribed, so I’m gonna stalk your vids now! Lol
Thanks for the warning. 🤣🤣
Great video! Im not new to finish work, as I run a finish dept for a millwork company. I know of this technique but never really looked into it until I saw your video! Now I'm hooked! I will definately be doing my own research on burning coloration on different species of wood. I see an entire wood frame living room set in my future using this technique!
That's awesome. And sounds super cool. Let me know how it turns out!
Cheers
Thanks. You just gave me an awesome idea for a project I’m doing. Love the sun bleach stain.
Awesome. Let me know how it turns out!
OMG so gorgeous! And the wood pieces look pretty good too. I'm so inspired! ;-)
Thank you! And...thank you...😂😂
Think I'm gonna try this on an old gun stock
Looks amazing
Thank you! Let me know how it turns out...Another sub on this channel was inquiring about how this would look on a gun stuck.
Cheers!🥃🔥🥃🔥
And I just found how I'm gonna finish my camper van. Just bought a torch and sunbleached stain. Thanks Pops!
Absolutely welcome! Let me know how it turns out!!
It's definitely got the 3D kinda look with the old weathered wood look . Its absolutely stunning. Keep the vids coming. I think i feel a new hobby coming on THANKS
Sure thing!

Hey mate, I've been in the 2pac kitchen/timber refinishing/french polishing industry (mostly as a painter) since I was 16 (now 29) Your burning technique is very good, I just wanted to let you know with the burning then sanding like you do its closer to a "Patina" technique than anything else I believe (burn, sand, stain, sand, seal, sand, top coat would be the 100% correct way but your way is fine. Also patina can of course be done no burning just mixing different stains to create an older look. Its also a technique done on some old school hot rods) Either way, I'd just like to say that you do a top notch job! Keep up the good work!
Thank you for the info and the kind words!
@@BuildDadBuild You're welcome!
Patina only aplies to steel in the sense your talking about
@@Thecarverman no it doesn't
Thanks dad, now that its legal in my state, I can totally buy a weed torch.
LOL!
Awesome work man. Very cool. 1st time seeing this method. Love the sound effects and humor.....neighbors cutting lawn...lol
Great video!! Thanks for sharing, I’m currently restoring an old table and will definitely be looking into that grey finish!!
Hey JP!
Sounds sweet! Good luck.
Cheers
Great video! Thanks for the tips, and they look amazing. One question, though. What kind of brush did you use to brush the char off of the planks?
That is a nylon brush (like one you'd clean a bathroom with). In the past I've used a metal brush, but it leaves more tool marks.
I think I would've gone creme brulee with the third torch, but I'm fat and I like creme brulee. Subbed.
🤣🤣🤣 and thanks for the sub!
I know this a little older of a video, but it is awesome. I have been waiting for a project to do this with. It wasn't about burning the wood, but more about the finishing steps. Thanks great step by step video.
Sure thing
Cheers!
Found you thanks to this video! I'm going to have to break out my torches now! Got a huge one (like your big one) and a smaller can torch (also like yours)! Great video man! Thanks for putting it up!
Awesome! Thank you.
As soon as you finished the boards, I said “well I thought he would mention the 3rd torch!” When you came back to talk about it, before you did anything else other than say “oh yeah!” as a avid watcher, I KNEW it had something to do with alcohol. 🤣
Gotta smoke that whiskey!
Cheers
Are there any alternative stains you would use to achieve a look comparable to the finish with the simple finish? I really like it, but it seems like an expensive product
Possibly Shellac? I think that would be the closest.
I've never found anything that works like Simple Finish so I think the price tag is totally worth it. For what it's worth a little goes a long way. I used it on my workbench project and used less than a 1/4 of a pint!
Boiled linseed oil?
I’m not new to burning wood but you took it up a notch 👍🏻👍🏻
Sandblasting is awesome too.
I've heard sandblasting is good!
And Thanks!

You had me at Shou Sugi Ban! Lol...You gave me more instruction and detail in the first few seconds that some of the show-boating burners and woodworkers have in a 30 min. vid...totally worth my time: Education+Entertainment. Double E Ride! Thx BDB.
Sure thing, Kristy!

Love the gray look...and the smoked coctail!

So, I got bored of writing my Dungeons and Dragons campaign, so I came to CZcams and started watching my usual creepy material. I then got a recommendation for this video. I don’t normally click on stray videos that don’t pertain to what I’m currently watching, but lately I’ve been letting things slide. I gotta say, whatever information CZcams has on me through my cookies on the net that caused them to recommend this to me, thank you. This is some badassery here. You’ve got some sick creative skill sir, and now I want to attempt to do this, too! You’ve got my subscription!
Awesome! Glad I could be of assistance.
And thanks for the sub.

So glad you came up in my suggestions. Very cool.

I had only seen burned wood table built once and I decided to do it on the siding I am going to do for my new house. Now I have more ideas!
Thank you for the information.

Thank you for the information.
The best part is the whisky. i loveit.
The best part is always the whiskey! 👍🏻👍🏻🥃🥃
As an amateur with woodworker, I typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement. Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . I now work like a genius. That is great!?
Sun bleach stain, huh? Sounds like my next purchase!
It's great stuff!
What brand?
Loved this! I'm completely new to wood working, I think my 1st project is going to be making a simple top on my tool box, and guess who has a torch!?
Noice!
*TopFineWoodworking. Com* is a fantastic website about wood working. I took various classes as well as finished a one year diploma in carpentry at a local tech college; this is much better than any book I worked out of during those lessons. It explains everything regarding woodworking as well as complements it with helpful photos.?
I subscribed because you ask so nicely in a non-commercial way...thanks!

My dude and fellow dad, great vid! I burn and poly for my projects. You just upped my game.

Smoked cocktails rock!
I watched a video where a dude smoked lemons and then used the juice to make a whiskey sour. I'm sooooo trying that!
@@BuildDadBuild holy crap, ya that sounds epic, I'm DEFINITELY going to be looking that up and trying it!

Excellent video. And thanks so much for the brief safety tips. That is sorely lacking in a lot of DIY videos. It's all fun n games till you burn the garage down.
Yeah. I get a little worried that folks don't see the precautions I go to. In my older videos I was always trying to keep the safety equipment out for "the shot"...but the dad in me is like "you gotta leave that in"! 👍🏻👍🏻
And thanks for the kind words. 🥃👍🏻🥃👍🏻
Great info. I love the gray. I am now inspired to stain my kitchen island that color with the burnt wood

Dude, great video. Those look really awesome! 👍👍
great video.....really clear, concise, informative, covers alot of ground for the novice like me who appreciates wood building techniques and the culture behind it, good sound and picture qualty makes alot of difference here....had i known about shou sugi ban prior, i might have used this wood preservation technique instead of using steel..........read my next post how to add another wood preservation technique to shou sugi ban treated wood and the wood may last for an extremely extremely long time
Thanks, brother!
Glad you enjoyed it.

renepulido96 to my opinion it depends in the thickness of the wood. The thicker the wood the deeper you burn
Thats pretty cool, t strange part is a few weeks ago I found a weed burning torch and the tank on the side of the road now I know what I can use it for. Thanks
