50 Worst CGI Effects in Movie History

- We love visual effects, especially when they are combined with practical effects and/or practical filming to create a seamless illusion. The power of CGI can be invisible and amazing. This video is a collection of CGI from movies where that is definitely NOT the case. Most of these really make you wonder what they were thinking when they approved these effects. Enjoy!

This is our list, what did we leave out that you'd include on your list of worst CGI in movies?
black panther and wonder woman
The new Sonic movie trailer. Oh my good Christ is it terrible
Definitely Sonic the Hedgehog. XD Though the trailer JUST came out. Lol
Black panther
Bruce banner in the hulk buster in infinity wars. Everything else is great effects wise but that
Remember, there’s a difference between bad CGI and old CGI.
Except even for 90's standards they're still bad.
Half of them at least.
Ransford Flentjar yeah. It’s just that some good effects from the 90s are on this list.
@@masterklaw4527 Like Jurassic Park yeah but half or most of these movies suck ass.
its the same
Let me get this straight, they included the Matrix, Harry Potter and Star Wars but didn't include Sharkboy and Lava girl?
Quite a shit list
damn good point
@Javin Newell well if you're gonna say "in movie history" people will assume you've considered most if not all movies
Or Foodfight?!
I mean,Harry Potter CGI is great, (Maybe in the Goblet Of Fire and the next film until it finish), but imagine, it is in years 2001-2009, CGI technology are evolving every years, and how this shitty list expect, do they need to make new Harry Potter movies from year 1 back? Harry Potter and The Philoshoper Stone already look greats in it's day.
As a CG artists and developer, I can confidently say most of these scenes are not bad at all. I would even say that some of the scenes this person included are very impressive for their time.
im sure the the artists that made that Blade 2 , and along came a spider scene thought they looked great too lol
Ha they are shit, CGI is shit
Yes I have no idea why King Kong is on there. I thought the film did a great job CGI wise. I rewatch it and it still holds up pretty well. Okay maybe not the spiders.
A lot of great effects... I think that he put in there just for the comments
ad verecundiam
Actually good, and still impressive, cgi clips:
3:21 Harry Potter (Though I am on the fence about this one)
5:58 King Kong (small dino, not the big ones)
6:37 Indiana Jones
7:50 Green Lantern (this one in particular is a terrible example as it’s an impressive cgi-suit)
8:33 Hobbit (not the most realistically but it’s also a super light elf running across it so… take that as you may)
8:49 Fantastic Four (managed to take one of the better cgi moments)
9:10 Beauty and the Beast (though it’s still bad because it’s live action)
9:50 Aladdin (also still bad because it’s live action)
These are genuinely well made cgi, either for their time or compared to now as well. What makes people think better or worse for some of these are purely based on their idea of what should and shouldn’t have been attempted, that’s why so many people are disagreeing.
But if you look at it from an objective standpoint, these are some of the okay or even impressive cgi animations out there.
How about The Mist and I am Legend?
In my opinion, good high budget cgi is the cgi that doesn't break the immersion for the movie and let's you enjoy and believe those sequences that are only possible in fiction. In old or low budget movies it's understandable, but in some of the most recent examples that you give it's really obvious that it's cgi. And it's not the artist fault, by the way, it's the studios that often rewrite scenes after they've been animated and make the vfx companies redo them, sometimes few months before the movie comes out and without aditional pay.
The CGI was pretty bad in the first two Harry Potter movies, very plasticky, movie 3 used a ton of practical effects which made filming twice as long but showed the quality on the screen.
some of them are actually pretty good and top notch when it was released
There were/are tactful ways of using CGI and there have been films that have used it very appropriately.
Like In irreversible (2002) which is an incredible use of CGI (I'll link the vid showing how they did it, if anyone is interested).
The best examples are usually very hard to spot because it can be abhorrent when you try to be flashy or lazy with it.
Like what? Are you serious? This list is accurate, pieces of shit all of them.
@@PresidentialWinner I think it is more of a "these movies had scenes that were amazing at their time". Like Dragonheart was a huge special effects milestone, but the head barelly affects the water in that scene.

Ngl I loveee that CGI that looks so realistic but so fake at the same time, just like that one
@@hanielalvarez1978 it does
That and the cat woman one
@@hanielalvarez1978I think it’s because of how bouncy they are and also because of the transitions between the real shot and CGI shot.
The texture on the models gives it away for me, but the animation is good
It wasn't worst ever, it's a different time of CGI, it was beautiful for the time and I'm grateful for it. I loved basically everything you shown.
These are pretty funny esp. the serious movies that have crap CG effects its like ARE THEY FUCKIN KIDDING
King Kong (2005) got an Oscar for Visual Effects... And it's on this list...
okey i can tell you this everytime when a creature its on screen without any green screen intervention it look great (i mean the empire state building fight is fully animated and it looks really realistic) everytime an actor is in front of a green screen (like in that scene) looks like shit since you can see the line between the character and the chroma effect behind it
Only the brontosaur scene looks bad.
@@MrD-on6dp I think only some frames look bad.
@@dys30 yes
Most of the movie looked great, the stampede scene was awful in the cinema when I saw it opening night. There were snickers from the audience at how fake it looked. They did too much for that era of time with what they could do.
Jumanji was actually the first film to have fully CGI animals ever, it was revolutionary back then. It shouldn't be on the list at all.
While some people might have considered it revolutionary, we did not. The animals of Jumanji were something we've always found to be pretty terrible. It was a case of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." We would have much rather seen practical, or at the very least practical + digital. Either way, we appreciate you watching!
The moments of Jurassic Park when the dinosaurs were CGI looked WAY better than these monkeys, and that movie was two years older. There’s no excuse for Jumanji to end up looking that bad. Lol
The other animals still look pretty nice.
Ummm no. Jurassic Park came 2 years before and has CGI better than most films today.
@@Little1Cave Jurassic park had it easy, dinosaurs didn't have fur. This movie was the first to be able to digitally animate fur. Don't compare Jurassic Park to this, it's not fair because some aspects were far easier for Jurassic park to animate.
7:46 I think the face looks super realistic for what they coud do for Tron 2010. The lighting maches and the facial expresions are really well done.
Thought When they simply look like a Lifeless Maniquinnne with the graphics out of a PlayStation 3 game. Not going to lie, but the de-aging looks so laughably bad, it both ridiculous and funny at the same time in the most wrong out of places.
They could put a real actor lmao
@@ashsummermakaio4756 they wanted him to look younger
@@maximum7263 They could do that through a million forms. They could apply makeup, they could try to find a younger actor that looks similar to the older one, they could do some camera tricks like they did with actresses in the 50s to make them look young and pretty.
But no, they chose to show off their awful CGI
@@ashsummermakaio4756 actually, i don't think that makeup or another actor would be as effective as cgi
3:46 can we all just appreciate the animation. most people that concider themselves professional can't even do animation that good, just saying
The reason people say this is bad cgi is because of the way they animated it. It doesn't look like anyone would move the way they did.
@@editsofthearrowverse3558 then the crew that dealt in blending the animation with this scene did a terrible job or adding motion blur to it for no reason. Even the body proportion sizes are off
Man i can't agree with you i mean the cgi at 7:32 is one of the best cgi ever

While the CGI in The Lawnmower Man may have been bad for the time, the movie was years ahead of it's time. I recommend watching it sober and with friends as it's a really terrifying movie.
2:33 hey look, Joey in space 😂😂
I’m still confused as to half of these aren’t bad
Most of them are absolutely terrible I don't know what you're talking about. You kinda gotta be looking for the imperfections to be able to spot them not only that you gotta be looking at it from a VFX artists perspective.
Ransford Chester think about jar jar and stuff, that crap almost holds up
@@luffysimp1758 Jar Jar's CG doesn't "almost" hold up. Jar Jar is actually pretty much perfect and he holds up perfectly for today's standards Jar Jar is the perfect example of a 100% CG character. I was talking about the other movies. Most of them are pretty bad especially that scene in Matrix Reloaded where Neo fights the Agents. But in their defence it was rushed.
Ransford Chester I know. I didn’t mean half of them. Just some like the deer, King Kong, and some other things. The real things that were messed up was the shading on a lot of characters. The tech just wasn’t available at the time.
@@luffysimp1758 Perhaps not but dozens of MovieStarPlanet before King Kong were able to accomplish such a feat without having to use software. Practical VFX is just as important as CGI you don't always need to use software to be able to shade. It's easier of course but it's not the only way.

Pure Shock and Terror indeed
This is the worst of them to be honest
Wasn't this intentionally bad? I mean, there are worse CGI works in parody movies.
Or is this not a parody?
Honestly, I think the CGI fight scene in Blade 2 looked nice
Most of these I was like "Im pretty ok with that"
This is a horrible list. A lot of these are simply dated and a product of their time. At the time, some of them were revolutionary. I don't think this is a fair list at all. Hell, Aladdin isnt even out yet.
If he wanted to put in actual revolutionaries that are dated now he would have put Tron in, but its not.
Anirudh Menon I think none of these movies were revolutionary, there’re better examples.

ENEKO TORRES Birdemic
@@AleMaia I looked it up and shockingly, it's actually not an Asylum movie! It was an independent one written, produced and directed by a guy named James Nguyen, who also financed it through his studio. He even tried to promote it at the Sundance Film Festival by handing out flyers from his van, which didn't even have the correct website on it (as apparently he spelled it 'Bidemic').
Meanwhile, Asylum movies actually have slightly better CGI.
Legend has it the bulk of the budget went into acquiring hallucinogenic drugs...

Despite what you may think of Jar-Jar Binks as a character, that CGI is still pretty top-notch.
Yea for 2001 it is
1999.
And it aged better than the CGI from movies that were made this decade.
This list is pure nonsense. CGI on Jar-Jar Binks is one of the best things from prequels, esepcially in the scene they showed. It's a bit funky during the last battle of Phantom Menance, but during that scene that they showed, it's no worse than a average 2019 movie.

it was a gem of its time
Cobson
Bad CGI in the 1990s was understandable. It's the resurgence of terrible CGI in the 2010s that gets me
You shouldn’t make lists about CGI if you don’t understand the history of it. It’s a constantly developing tool for filmmakers to utilise, not something to ignorantly bash.
A better list would be one where CG was used needlessly or incorrectly, a few on this list would fit that perfectly.
1:36 for a long time I thought they were talking about Jabba and I didn't realise that it was Han Solo being digitally elevated
Oh wow i didn't realize. That's pretty terrible.
I think Han is stepping on the tail.
Yea, they had to digitally animate him stepping on his tail because the original scene had Jabba portrayed by a human

I think the title is misleading, in many of the cases it is just iffy compositing of live action humans into 3D scenes.
@@mbh4575 Can you clarify what you mean by "iffy compositing?"
@@zed6740 For example in the King Kong stampede scene and others where live action humans are placed in CGI environments, they don't blend in well, both because of lighting and shading issues and because the camera doesn't seem to match, and it all has to be composited together, which is quite difficult to make look good.

People shit on the matrix reloaded... even thought that the cgi is dated, it’s the cinematography that is the biggest giveaway, and isn’t grounded in reality. Obviously the entire scene isn’t grounded in reality, no pun intended, but the cinematography is a huge factor as to why we deem it as fake. Had it been locked down on a hand held system, it’d be more convincing. Regardless, it’s such a bad ass fucking scene!

When I first watched the 90s and 2000s films through my childhood, they all looked immensely real to me
this would simply have not been complete without Birdemic
3:05 looks good to me
Because is good
He just moves to cartoony
16 Janeiro 1993 RocketMan I actually like Jar Jar Binks.
It's pretty bad
It is good, but George Lucas chose to give jar jar a bad voice.
7:40 OK the head may be too wobbly but GODDAMN THE REST OF THE MOVIE IS BEAUTIFUL AF
Idk why
In that lighting he doesn’t look too bad
Ik, quite a sht list
Ikr i got so mad when Tron came on this list
Tron Legacy is grossly underrated
Why is Dragonheart on this list? The effects were widely praised when it came out, and I personally remember watching it as a kid and thinking it looked amazing.
This really isn't fair, some of these are very old CGI effects and were actually considered cutting edge for their time.
6:17 Stuck that landing! 😂😂😂
😂
7:32 WTF?
8:14 WTF??
Ι ΚΝΟW RIGHT ???? WTF INDEED ? The birds are the worst CGI effects of all time !!!!
George Moschos best*
@@MrMrjack18 Are you high? Birdemic has the best CGI of all time
Twilight 😂😂😂😂👏👏
TENdodeku NAHHH it’s trash
Birdemic looks like a five year old’s first Kinemaster edit.
There is a distinct difference between trash CGI and CGI that is old. It isn't really fair to consider stuff like Jumanji to be bad, they did really well with the technology they had at the time.
Worst? Most of them aren't that bad for their era. The worse I know aren't even in this list.
Birdemics definitely the worst I've seen though
Black Panther CGI looks worse tho and also Some Endgame CGI looks terrible
@@SakurakoLover endgame looked phenomenal. What cg if i might ask.
@@Swartgaming Some shots looks bad but overall, its good at least
What were you thinking? 7:34 is the best cgi I've ever seen
😂
Stolen comment
@@rizqihakeem2156 nah man, not stolen. Everyone can think of that joke without reading other peoples comments, so perhaps it’s unoriginal. But stolen?
No
Bad cgi is like bad knock off brands, delightfully entertaining
birdemic had to be a joke, there's no way that was an actual movie
7:31 Yo that's better than Endgame.
You're out of your mind.
@@assembled1855 joke
i totally agree, they even used real birds
Highlander?
Michael On A Helicopter I wonder what high- tech stuff they used to make the birds in birdemic, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were real.
Jesus, you can't expect cgi from 1992 to still hold up. It was impressive at the time. Hell, even Jar-jar binks looks pretty damn good 20 years later
Dude, Terminator 2 is from 1991 and it has an awesome CGI.
Jurassic Park/Terminator 2 called, they said to STFU
@@rickyhyppa7960 Your nostalgia is showing...
@@redwaldcuthberting7195 I see it, its right beside your horrible argument of screaming Nostalgia Nostalgia Nostalgia.
@@rickyhyppa7960 terminator 2 and jurassic parks effects were done by ILM. Big difference!
0:40 too me the forest looks like they added a few trees then added mirrors too make them look like there was alot
Any CGI before 2000s can't be scrutinised as it was a time before high end technological advancements we have now
