- New cars are a pain. Will keep the old ones running as long as possible.
This is not a how to, this is a "how we did" type deal.
Here is an article about the class action lawsuit.
www.carcomplaints.com/news/2018/chevy-equinox-ecotec-engine-lawsuit-oil-consumption.shtml
Mannn... Someone needs to start a class action
Anyone rich enough watching IS the man and the man doesn’t stick it to himself ever.
Your intake looked much better than mine. I have done a full manual cleaning on mine using pecan shell blasting on two occasions. Both times was worse than what you showed. I installed a catch can to attempt to remedy the problem. We’ll see how it goes.
This is one of the big issues on this engine. I rebuild these 2.4 and 2.2 Ecotec engines here in Las Vegas. The desert dryness and temps keep that issue at bay for the most part. The big issue I deal with is timing chain failures. But I do think these vehicles are great if maintained. So clean your intakes and change timing chain every 100K.
D Lew if you are tackling in your garage without a lift, just yank the engine out through the top and leave the trans in place.
Thanks for posting this video. I show to a lot of people when I explain the process.
I've never heard of this problem either but I'm in Denver which is also a very low humidity environment. Should I worry? 2011 Malibu with a 2.4. How do you clean the PCV ?
@@DJR5280 remove intake and valve cover. If you have access to a machine shop, that is best route. They can usually "hot tank" the items to remove all oil sludge and carbon deposits.
If not, you can use solvent or break clean to remove the build up. Blow out the small center hole and use a small drill bit (in hand not drill) to make sure is open and clean.
Depending on mileage, rings may be allowing some "blow by" and could be a lot of oil in intake and air inlet tube. A good cleaning will help system, but not fully cure.
@@uluz2a6 Thank you for the response. I noticed that when I changed the oil this last time it smelled like gas really bad. Before I did the oil change I used BG EPR which I've used many times and I don't remember it smelling that bad. We just had the wager pump done and I removed the timing cover and reset the balance shaft tensioner because it was whining. Should those chains be really tight with no slop or should they have just a little slop and I mean very little movement? One thing I notice also is when running and I remove the oil cap there's a lot of pressure that comes out. Never experienced that before. Does that mean the PCV is clogged?
@@DJR5280 sounds like chain and a re-ring are in order. If you aren't too far from Las Vegas, I'd be happy to help you
@@uluz2a6 I'm Denver unfortunately. Hr flight but 10 HR drive
Great video! I'm curious, was the left side of the unibody and surround engine area caked in oil? The aux belt seems to sling it all over the place. I feel like the leaking oil is traveling across from the right side, trans fill cap area to the left side. My equinox motor had oil everywhere!!
All that work, I would install a $25 ebay catch can and just empty the crap out of it each month. Ton of videos on the CC install. How much did the dealer quote you? Timing chain/water pump install is $1800 here in the Chicago suburbs, incl. parts, lol.
I think it made a bit of a mess when the seal blew but it was in town so not a lot of wind to blow it around. I think he has just been pulling the one line off and draining any moisture out of it when the oil gets changed. I think the dealer quoted $1200 to do the rear main, I imagine it would go up from there though
My father have a 2016 equinox driving in cold weather of ontario canada car feels weird and oil starts coming out the back oil is undercoating the entire car , got it towed to to the dealership told us no warranty coverage not on TSB also $1600 just the labour and goes on its very sad and heartbreaking he just had it a year , too bad GM dont do anything to help
That sounds very similar to what happened to this one. It is unfortunate such a big company won't support the people who purchase its defective product. Best of luck with it regardless though
The same happened to me took it to 1 mechanic they couldnt fix it then i had to tow to a dealership very aggravating when u have to start a 401k for the dam car. Best wishes in the repairs.
@Elizabeth Argueta I believe if this is my issue. My equinox is gonna be considered totaled..
Where are you guys located
Thank you for posting this video. I just had this happen to my 2014 equinox at 101,000 miles and dealer quoted $8,000 as the lowesr cost repair option. I am curious if you changed the timing chain and if not did the little rattle at start up go away or is it still there?
Glad it was helpful. Best I remember, the rattle went away once it built oil pressure. About 2 years after this it needed the timing chains and related junk done
The start up rattle is usually the timing chain tensioner .
I just found this problem in my cousins car. it is the 2016 I have no lift or garage to work in .breakes my heart to have to give her the bad news
It's pretty frustrating
Can you tell us what check valve you used and what it's rated for ? (PSI)
I think it was a brake booster check valve. It isn't really ideal since it wasn't spring loaded (the reason it has to sit vertical). I would bet there is a low pressure check valve that is spring loaded and better suited. If it lets air in the car will run bad since it's air the MAF isn't seeing
I have a 2014 and this happened to me the day after Christmas.. took it to the dealership and they repaired it.. it cost me $2700, $300 in parts, rest in labor.. they told me they never heard of this, but then told me 3 more people called them the same day I did with the exact same problem..
Sorry to hear that, "3 people called the same day" sounds about right lol
Yuppp... Same thing here
Where did you attach that crank vent check valve to?
I don't remember honestly, I think it was to the engine block side where water wouldn't pool in the line. Probably can find a better way of doing it than we did though
That motor can come out through the top unnecessary work. Intake, exhaust, belt drive, connectors, coolant hoses, trans bolts, torque converter bolts, starter and axle bracket. Don’t need a lift it can be done on the garage floor.
The pcv tube was sucking air or blowing air out?
Unsure what specifically you are mentioning, The factory tube from the air box to the engine allows clean air to vent into the crankcase of the engine. The tube/check valve we added will not allow air to enter the system but should let pressure out of the crankcase if the intake and airbox ports get obstructed again
I think ours just went this morning. My wife called me on their way to DC. For our grandsons surgery. Oil all over the rear of it, serpentine belt is off. I'm going to get a belt. And I'm finding a tree and deer hide somewhere. And I'm totalling the P.O.S...
Best of luck, Hoping the problem is something easier to deal with
i just pulled my 2.4 and was wondering if you could link the check valve you used?
I am not sure where it came from. You can search for one by the hose inner diameter you are using. I am not sure this is a good fix but theoretically I think it works. The check valve just needs to hold up to the temperature, normally close itself, and open with minimal pressure. Best of luck and hope it goes back together smooth
A service bulletin: static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2015/SB-10090101-2280.pdf
It ended up needing the motor pulled again for timing chain guides. But needing the motor pulled twice in a 3 year span isn't bad. Nope. Actually quite terrible.
Just finishing up on doing this in my driveway with no lift an no engine hoist it can be done just be ready for some hrs
About to do the same thing on my 2016
With 95,000 miles
That's around what this one had, best of luck with it
That's the coolant outlet buddy not the water pump that stud nut combo hold the belle housing
lmao watching you do this is funny as hell lmao. how would you do it in your driveway he said you dont. lol how about just take the front clip and radiator out and pull the motor out the front instead of down the bottom lmao you spent more time trying to get to things and struggling with things instead of making it easier on yourself. You struggled more than needed but got it done props to you.
Just say you wish you had a lift lol
I am currently going through this on my GMC Terrain. I bought am American made car thinking this stuff wouldn’t be a problem. Boy was I in for a surprise. And how shameful of GMC to offer no help in this matter
It really is disappointing, sorry it let go on you
same here, on a 2017 with 70k no less. I only had it covered due to extended powertrain warranty from when I bought it with 14k. I was nervous I'd be screwed over by the engine before even hitting 100k, apparently I was in the right mind with the warranty. would've been out probably 2-3k over a shitty pcv system.
@@nobotious Did you get any pushback from the warranty company? I have the same issue but they are denying my claim?
@@bryanlkennedy the warranty was through the local dealership I bought it from, they covered it but would not have covered it under factory warranty. Which is BS as far as I'm concerned.
@@nobotious I bought an extended one and they are denying my claim. :(
how much will cost that job
I think the local dealer quoted $1200 at the time
How long did this take, with a helper the whole time i assume? Any special tools besides the one for fuel line??
With both of us I think it took 2 days. When it later needed timing chain guides, I think he did it by himself in the same time. The fuel lines are the only specialty thing I remember
Helped me to sell it. I put over 4500.00 in repairs such as that one repair
Sorry you had such trouble with it
How often does something like that happen? I have had this car 3 yrs now and its a 2016 equinox. Where it blew the rear oil gasket. What can i do to prevent it from happening again? Please and thank u
The best thing to do is take the air intake off with each oil change (the part on top of the engine itself) and make sure it is free of water. The other thing to do, less often is to take the intake off and clean the small vent port (I think it is a 5/16 hole). It is in the intake itself, below the air box about level with the radiator. You have to take out the bolts unplug a couple sensors. It is a major pain to get passed everything, but worth the trouble. Let me know if you have anymore questions.
I recommend what Nathan suggested, I also pinned a comment that has some images of these components in a service bulletin
@@nathanblythe4013 can we use oil catch can to avoid this problems?
I’m thinking about doing this job in the garage without a lift. The plan is to remove the transmission and go from there.
If you see a way of doing it more power to you but this was a very intensive repair that shouldn't be underestimated. Would GM not fix yours under the service bulletin either? Do you have to remove the front clip to get the trans out like you say? Sorry you are having to mess with this issue
@@PracticallyStock Honestly I haven't look to see if GM will fix it. I bought the car with a salvage title with intentions to flip it and found out about the rear main seal issue afterward. The plan is to to it the way you did just with out a lift. Jack the car up set it on stands, drop the cradle and support it with a Engine lift.
Could maybe make some wood cribbing out of 2x4s to place under the car as you jack it up in increments, and then screw the sections of cribbing together as you placed them. I think you could probably get 2-3 feet like that if it was built strong. Have you heard the motor run?
@@PracticallyStock It runs quiet and moves under its own power.
That's good hopefully previous owner didn't let it run long on low oil from the leak, that's why I asked since it would suck to do all that work for a knocking motor. Could cut the filter open with a chisel and hammer if you really wanted to check for metal. Let me know how you end up getting the motor pulled
Bummer yeah they seem like they are set to blow. One way or another after the warranty expires
Engineered obsolescence
The book says to drop the tranny instead of pulling the motor
If that method still has you drop the front subframe, I would think pulling the motor would be easier. There might be an easier way that what we did but it was not that bad
Just pull the mill out the top way faster and easier
2010 gmc terrain same issues and owe 12k on a car I can't drive
Sorry to hear that, amazing how such a small design oversight causes a huge problem. Not sure if I can add any info that isn't already in the vid but let me know if I can help in anyway
What state are you in?
Michigan
Damn, we are in Texas. I was hoping you would be closer. If you have any questions we are more than happy to answer them to the best of our ability.
@@nathanblythe4013 can the engine be bold from the top
Sounds like you have a broken timing chain guide.
It doesn't make any noise and it runs good
@@PracticallyStock the rattle on start up was more than likely the timing chain. I'll post a picture of mine. In the process of replacing pistons and timing chain set. The front chain guide on these engines are bad for breaking off near the top bolt which leaves a bit of slack on the chain and it rattles against the top guide.
@@PracticallyStock imgur.com/gallery/XM8SbPP Going to go hunting for the rest of it. Cleaning, inspection and reassembly tomorrow.
Thanks for the info, I will pass that on to Nathan
Land mines all over the place... I hate this motor!
These guys did to much, it comes out way easier and faster then the way thy did it
(Your input is of no value because no one but you knows what you are talking about)
We had never removed an engine on a car this new and even with having to learn a lot, it still wasn't a big deal to get it out. If there is an easier way, cool. This isn't a "how-to" video but rather just showing what we did
Look man, bro, dude, just get to the point, we don’t need a whola life story of who’s car’s what and where they went and what they did, just do 1,2,3 bam, bam, bam, i mean i might as well just watch the whole youtube ads
Bam, Bam, Bam Replace the Seal. Easy enough? You do know you can fast-forward in this modern day right?
Edit: Retracting some sarcasm given you are probably quite frustrated with your ecotech
But people keep buying these junk so . Duh.lol.
