    I have 2013 Equinox 2.4L. 230km on it. Runs beautiful, but uses oil. Was -21C on Monday Jan 21, 2019 when my wife drove 20km at 80km/hr then slowing down to a light the engine stalled. No warning. No lights. Pulled off to side of road and would not start for her. Checked the oil and it was low. Went to top it up and was surprised to see it took 3 liters and was not on the dip stick yet. Looked under and could not see any leaks. Left if for the night and went surfing on the net when I found your post. Next day found it was leaking oil from the rear main seal when running. Took off the air breather and found a ton of water in the pcv. Was frozen and blocked for sure. Called the dealer regarding the service bulletin. They told me my VIN was not included in the service bulletin. So I took off the intake and found the pcv hole completely plugged and I cleaned it out. Called GM Canada and they said same. Can not help me. Had I been notified when the bulletin came out It would have saved my engine. I replaced the rear main seal and now the engine is making a deep knocking noise. Next to take the oil pan off and have a look at the crank shaft for spun bearings. Bad GM. Shame on them. Such a simple fix not shared with all. My car had been in at a GM for recall for a rear wiper motor joint and rust along the bottom doors, but nothing about this. Ahhhhhh
    See what came out of my air intake....

    When I went to begin the oil consumption test per the Executive Resolution Liaison the dealer notified me that I have water in my PCV system and I need to get it cleaned for $700 before Tuesday when it’s going below freezing. I found the Bulletin No.: 14882 which explains that GM is extending the warranty for my 2014 Equinox to 10 years or 120k miles (mine is 73k). I called the Executive Resolution Liaison back and she pretty much said SOL your VIN isn’t listed. I told her that it’s having the exact same problem that is talked about in the bulletin 14882. She just repeated Sorry your VIN isn’t listed so it’s not covered. She wouldn’t accept the logic and just said sorry. And people wonder why we all go to Toyota and Honda. Bullying us with Patriotic duty won’t work when the company won’t even take care of you. This is enabling bad behavior on the part of corporations. We need to show them that we’re not going to take this by not buying their products. And my tax dollars helped to bail them out!

I have a 17 Terrain in the shop right now, guy just had the rear engine seal replaced at another shop, but they failed to fix the problem-pressure in the crankcase. I am tempted to supply an old fashioned PCV valve, tee into the big vacuum line at the intake, route it directly to the valve cover (where all the fumes are) and create a functional crankcase vent. Excellent video Again!
    Thank You NNKH!
    The 2.4L is a very good engine (good power, good mileage, and decent to work on as well), but has this pisser of a design issue.
    This engine also has a tiny oil filter and needs to be changed more often than the "idiot-light" indicates.
    Through a few forums, and this video, I have found a good and efficient fix for the water build-up problem... Adding a $40 oil & water separator system to the PVC line before the intake.
    This creates a low point for water to accumulate and is easily drained.
    I empty mine every 2500 miles when I change my filter and get an amazing amount of water & sludge every time.
    This eliminates the water accumulating and freezing in colder climates and also purges out excess vapors in the system.
    Add the pressure vent oil cap as described and these should prevent seal blow-out...which is a major pain.
    No issues after 15K.
    Cheers
    Dean

    I'm going to go look at a couple of the car forums for more information. I believe that the pipe running from the air box to the valve cover is the "Fresh Air Intake" portion of the PCV system. If this pipe has excessive blow-by in it, the PCV passageways are plugged inside the engine. An Oil Catch can on this pipe would be a Band-aid on a failed system. The intake manifold needs to come off, and the PCV passageways need to be cleaned out.

    • @pietsee1000
      @pietsee1000 Před 5 lety +1

      You are correct, it is the "clean side" PCV or as you say "the fresh air intake" PCV.
      Yes a catch can could help, but it must be mounted lower them where that PCV goes into the crankcase.
      An alternate "band aid" is a vented cap with nylon ball from CFM performance in FLorida.

    I forgot to also note that driving short trips or a stuck open thermostat usually cause the excessive moisture buildup in these PCV systems. If you drive longer distances regularly you are much less likely to see this type of failure(Since the engine warms up fully and has sufficient time to "burn off" the moisture) Also, I said in this video that this was a recall when indeed I believe it is only a service bulletin.

    • @tssci6774
      @tssci6774 Před 4 lety +2

      I have and others on the Equinox forums have found just the opposite. Extended highway driving in cold weather, high moisture, low to moderate loads is when the moisture, and emulsified oil builds up. The fixed orifice in the intake does not draw enough air flow due to low vacuum and small orifice. Under load, cruising on the highway in overdrive, there is positive pressure in the crankcase and not enough vacuum on the fresh air side of the throttle body to remove excessive moisture. I have taken extensive vacuum and pressure measurements in the crankcase and intake. You are absolutely correct about the downward sloping tube to the reservoir. This is a bad design. I have been telling people for years now to replace the tube with a flexible hose so it drains back to the intake and to use air/oil seperator on the fresh air side. People dont even check their oil most of the time, so checking and draining the separator will overfill too. At the least GM should have put out a TSB and notified customers to regularly check the tube and reservoir at each gas up, but that would create liability for them. I haves used a separator and it works great but there is maintenance. I also installed a drain on the stock reservoir as an alternative to the separator.

    I own a 2016 Equinox with a 2.4L with just over 100,000 miles. I bought it new in 2016. Last deep freeze in December 2021 my PCV system plugged up and blew out the rear main seal dumping 5 quarts of oil instantly on the highway at 70 miles per hour. Of course the motor was destroyed in a matter of seconds. It bent valves, wrecked the timing chain, etc. I called my Chevy dealer and they said "Sorry your out of luck." , but yes there is a technical service bulletin out on this but you are out of warranty. My only choice was to dish out about $4000 on a junk yard motor and installation. This is a very common problem. I wish they would of at least had the decency to send me a letter letting me know about this issue so I could have easily prevented it. Since this happened to me a few weeks ago I found this car is on the list for many other issues including paper thin frame underneath which rots out in about 8 years, timing chain issues and a few more. I am afraid to drive it now so I traded it in on a Dodge Caravan. No more GM / Chevy for me.

I had found the bulletin but the dealer said it wasn't covered under it even tho I had it listed my engine code on the bulletin. So irritating that I just finally came across this video right after I fix my vehicle. For me I didn’t blow a rear main seal luckily, but I was getting reduced engine power and stability track message making my 2011 GMC Terrain 2.4 run really rough. Not sure what to do, I changed out the throttlebody, but I kept noticing the same brownish watery oily crap coming out of that tube as well contaminating my air intake system. That little hose is a special order part and took a few days to get in. I cleaned out that little tube as best I could and put the new hose on (BTW that little hose is a bitch to get on, I had to cut the old one and I’m pretty sure I slightly broke the new one a little bit trying to slide it on).
    Got the vehicle working again but I’m not sure how long it’ll last. This vehicle is riddled with problems. It eats oil like crazy and of course I’m past the recalls and warrantees on many of the issues because I have so many miles on it. I was thinking about bypassing this hose but wasn’t sure how that would affect fuel mileage or anything. It seems like it would make sense to bypass it, and I think that’s why there so much carbon buildup on the throttle body, because these crappy fumes are being recycled in the air. Wouldn’t it be better for just fresh air to be running through the system?

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow

I must have missed read my dipstick and added way too much oil. This would explain why junk was getting sucked up into that PCV tube. Only some have the Special Coverage for this issue. for the couple years i have worked in a Chevrolet Service Center, i think i have only had about three of these vehicles come in with a Special Coverage for this. If you don't have a special coverage you are almost guaranteed to pay at least $1500 or more. This is because you have to remove the transmission and clean up the intake/pcv to avoid it happening as soon as you accelerate out of the shop. Extended warranty's hear 2010-2015 Equinox and rear main leaking and send a inspector out instantly. No coverage if caused by the PCV system freezing. We see about two or three of these come in each week in the winter. It's a misconception to think that you will get this issue resolved for free unless you are a person with a lucky VIN.

Pretty sure the dealer screwed me on this one as now i have an immense amount of positive pressure blowing out my oil cap had enough to blow my hat off my head. I had a 2012 Terrain with the same problem. I sent the service manager the bulletin that I found referring to the 2.4. He done some research and said mine was covered under the warranty. The warranty was extended to 10 years or 120,000 miles. I’m at 72,000 and it’s a 2012 model, so he says we’re good. He got the repair done and found exhaust and intake actuators are bad and throttle body needed cleaned. That’s gonna be 400 bucks. He gets that done and calls me and said he is sticking to his word, but General Motors says my vin wasn’t covered. Thankfully he got them to cover the rear main seal replacement. He is gonna show me what they done when I go get it. Now I’m thinking, is it gonna be a warm weather car now? The main blew when my daughter was on her way to work and the ambient temperature was 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Very frustrating to say the least. At least my service manager didn’t back up on me. I have a 2013 with 2.4 ecotec engine also.
      I have studied a blown rear main seal from when my mechanic did a rear main seal replace and in my opinion the design has to sharp of a corner, then when PCV's are plugged, piston blowby increases crank case pressure and causes rear main seal to fail.
      A vented oil cap with nylon ball from cfm performance would prevent rear main seal failure in my opinion.
      A separate problem, which you might have, since it is not your main seal that is leaking oil
      Is you are burning oil. The oil from your crankcase is going up into your cylinders, getting past the oil control rings on your pistons, and then burning off as the cylinder fires. There is a class action law suit for this issue. I think in 2014 gM needed up cylinder walls and piston to counter this problem.
      I can explain more about toot cause of this issue, if you want. In my opinion....
      The 6 cylinder, which has similar piston and cylinder walll design does not have this oil burn issue.
      The same 4 cylinder ecotec engine in lighter smaller cars does not have this issue our equinox is 4000 lbs and heavy compared to other GM cars.
      When engine bogs down, lots of stress is put on cylinders resulting in blow by and resulting in oil getting into cylinders
      Do not use ECO mode , it facilitates engine bogging down.

      +Randy Chandler yes. That would certainly help prevent a failure. Although it's not good for the environment and the EPA would definitely not approve. I have a pod filter style oil cap on my 1986 Mustang because I bypass the PCV system. I and not sure if they make one that would fit your style oil cap though. Probably not. But you could always put a pod filter on the Breather nipple on the valve cover.

When my son bought his used at 77k The transmission broke 3 days later and the dealer was obliged to put a new one since my son was hurriedly put into this car without it being inspected. Now after adding just 10k miles to the car and two oil changes, the engine seized. 87,000 miles, oil blown out or burned somehow and the engine seized. We’re not rich by any means so what is the best option? Pull-a-part? A tested used engine? Or go to my Chevy dealer and ask them about it?

    I have a 2012 Gmc Terrain that I had to tow in to the dealership service department day before yesterday and was informed today that my car had this same exact issue. Frozen PCV caused moisture in the oil and pressure to build up in the engine and blow out the rear main seal. I was told it would NOT be covered under my extended warranty because it was done by "natural causes" (what?!!!) and I would have to shell out $3200 for repairs. Are there absolutely no other solutions to temporarily fix the issue if its a just a leak? Or will it HAVE to be replaced once its "blown-out"?

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  Před 6 lety

      Yhashele Acevedo I'm sorry to hear about your scenario. Unfortunately, this is a must fix item. As you saw in my video the oil is literally pouring out. You won't make it very far and there are no temporary fixes. However if you call around to a few shops you may find somebody to replace just the rear main seal for around $800 to 1000. That would be on the cheap end though. But whoever does the repair, make sure that they remove the intake and properly clean out the PCV system. I hope this helps and I greatly appreciate a thumbs up on the video.

      Yes and No
      Catch cans are typically put on the" dirty side" PCV orifice , but on this 2.4 ecotec that orifice is internal to the engine.
      I have an elite x2 catch can with drain on my V6 equinox on the "dirty side", but that is to prevent carbon deposits on my intake valve.
      This video shows the clean side PCV hose full of water gunk that is frozen.
      On the equinoxforums.... someone posted putting a clear catch can on this clean side. If you do put one on, the catch can should be mounted lower then lowest point of the clean side hose where it leaves the crankcase.
      An easier fix is the nylon ball vented cap, that I describe in another comment.

The manufacturer of the vented cap, CFM Performance, has stated it should not be used unless both the engine and cap are at full operating temps as they are in Florida and have never tested it in freezing conditions. Furthermore they have never tested it on this engine an it was designed for off-street, high performance, boosted applications, it is illegal in CA to sell, and it will fail an emissions inspection.
