Pedestrian countdown signals in Quincy, MA

  • A follow-up to my earlier video "Countdown walk signal" shot in 2009. Two of the signals were replaced with GE GT1 "incandescent-look" countdown pedestrian signals; the very same model that was installed at the Main St./Plain St. intersection in Brockton a couple years ago! The other older Tassimco countdown signals that were installed in the late 1990s are still intact, but have a few LEDs out. One of them (not shown) does not even have the timer working! Then again, those signals are over 15 years old now, so it makes sense.
This video gives you a good idea on how pedestrian signal requirements have changed; first we see a typical modern example of a countdown pedestrian signal, followed by a much earlier example, all at the same intersection! (Note the Tassimco signals start the countdown during the "walk" phase, while the GE signals only count down when the hand flashes, and they also show "0" at the end of the countdown while the Tassimco units don't. Plus, the Tassimco signals use a fiber-optic walk symbol instead of being completely LED like the GE units are.)
That chirping noise you hear when the walk phase is on is a Wilcox audible signal for visually-impaired pedestrians. They finally got them working again! (Brockton has them at a couple of intersections too.)
Another update of note: there is ANOTHER intersection in Brockton that is having countdown pedestrian signals installed. However, it looks like one of the signals is a Tassimco unit that was apparently new-old-stock! Interesting to see them use one of those in a new installation, particularly as the outlined symbols are no longer permitted on new pedestrian signals...

I wonder why some stop lights have all of one type of visor and some are mixed like the one at the end. Two caps style and one tunnel for the green

Lance Maddux the tunnel ones are better for winter that’s about it and places that get a lot of rain

if they have tones, where are the speakers?

The Wilcox speakers were only on a couple of the signal heads, not shown in this video. They've since redone the intersections on that street, so they now instead have Polara accessible pushbuttons, and they ALL now have countdown pedestrian signals. (At this particular intersection, they no longer all cycle at once; the new countdown signals only cycle depending on which crosswalk has a green light for vehicles, like in most major cities.) They even put in a couple of HAWK signal setups on this street!
