  • In today's episode, we're headed to a massive mine operation at over eight thousand feet in elevation. There is no cell service for miles, and the nearest town is 100 miles away. To say the least, it is a deadly place to break down.
Iron was discovered in 1908, and several mines were established. Despite the mine operations size, it was never considered to be significant. Only a sparse amount of history was documented. The history that is recorded remains infamous. It was a mine operation that nobody wanted to reside. Turnover rates were high compared to neighboring mines. Isolation and harsh conditions were the main reasons miners left, despite the lower salaries received elsewhere. Working conditions were tough; blasting away of the mountain was an everyday occurrence, and blistering cold conditions from being at a mountain peak only added to the misery. The operation was active through most of the year, only shutting down at the worst of conditions. Miners were often stranded on the mountain when snow storms hit.
A total of over 600,000 tons of ore were extracted. The operation shut down in the late 1960s.
The road up to the mine is steep and hazardous. Washed-out sections are prominent from years of flash floods and lack of maintenance. In 1978, a Nevada local headed up the steep road to hike the mountain peak just above the abandoned mine. On the way up, his truck crashed. He did not survive the accident. In the early 2000s, another person almost lost their life after a roll-over accident when attempting to traverse the same mountain road.
We spent two days on the mountain; it was cold day and night. Despite it being spring, the mountain showed no sign.
And now, it's time to check out this sky-high mine operation.

Wow, was this an onerous video to edit! Located in a desolate part of Nevada, this is one of the more significant mine operations I have explored. I appreciated the amount of stuff left behind, the old vehicles, cabins, bunkhouse, etc. Round trip, the drive was over two hundred miles, half paved and the other half unpaved. It was slow going heading up the mountain, the road was washed out in numerous sections, and sharp rock and landslides made the drive up slow going. Overall, it is an exploration I'll never forget. The nature of the location, being in a nearly inhospitable mountain range, truly makes it one of a kind.

Dump truck is an early 1950's Studebaker. The car at 26.29 is a 1950's Buick. Pickup looks to be a late 1930's GM.

If those old trucks could talk...... Jeep FC 150 or FC170 - 56' - 65' ■ Studebaker Dump - 49' - 53' but that one has an overhead six cylinder that wasn't offered until 61' ( it has to be a transplant) great video..... I had a 57' FC 150 in the mid 70's it was fun like being in an oven. The bumper gaurd on the back of the Buick is $$$
