- Tamils of Sri Lanka represent the oldest and second most popolous and Tamil community in the world after India.
The impact that the Tamil people and culture have had in the historical past of Sri Lanka is remarkable and undeniable. However, their existence has been greatly endangered after decades of bloody civil war. In the course of the same, their role within the political and economic life of the country was greatly reduced.
For this reason, today the Tamils of Sri Lanka are faced with great challenges in keeping their identity and legacy alive. They are subjected to great pressure both externally, in particular a pervasive sinhalization in Sri Lanka which is gradually marginalizing them in their own country, and from within due to the dispersal resulting from the diaspora caused by the events of the war.
Under this broad topic we will be then covering the following:
1) their composition, numbers, and location in the country;
2) history of the main groups;
3) discrimination and civil war;
4) diaspora;
5) main cultural and linguistic aspects that distinguish them from other Tamil groups outside Sri Lanka;
6) current issues.

Sinhalese comes from a combination of the ancient groups resident in the iisland, ie., the Yaksha, Naga, Deva etc. These originated from northwest and northeast of India according to genetic studies. These groups were collectively called Hela . The 4 regions of the island was therefore called "SivHela". (Siv meaning 4) . Siv-Hela became Sihela, Sihala, and finally, Sinhala, anglicised to "Sinhalese". These are the original occupants of the island, a mixture of the original cave dwellers, later Indian settlers who continuously moved in over the last 100,000 years or so, and more recent occupants like Prince Vijaya and others..

Unfortunately you don't know about Kumari Kandam (the last lost lemuria continent) 10k years ago submerged because of a tsunami (Nova's flood). Sri Lanka was part of KK, people lived there is the ansistry of SL Tamils.
Hi there! Yes, but there is a lot of speculation on the Kumari Kandam and it is still lacking proper historical evidences. I remember the interest Kumari Kandam attracted after the 2004 tsunami when temples emerged near the coast of Mahabalipuram, close to Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Tamils especially the tamil diaspora now identify as "eelam tamil 🐅" because of the war. We hope to have an independent state called "tamil eelam"

Sri Lankan Tamils and Indian Tamils are two distinct ethnic groups! Sri Lankan Tamils are direct descendants of Ancient Native Tribes (Nagas) of the Island. Possessing distinct culture, habits, and linguistic features! Both Sri Lankan Tamils and Sinhalese received migrants from South India eventually assimilated into these groups!!!
Lol. There is no connection between "Naga" people and Dravidians. There are so many inscriptions can found since 2nd century BC of "Naga" people with some of names just like "chora naga", "Maha Naga", "Kallata Naga", Vara Naga" in Sri Lankan ancient brahmi Inscriptions. All of those inscriptions written in "Sinhala prakrit" language. And also they were Buddhist. If the "Naga" people speaks Dravidian language why those inscriptions written in Sinhala prakrit 😂. "Naga" clans closely related to Sinhalese culture. There is no any evidence of Naga people who were originated from Dravidians. In Sri lanka native indigenous people still survived as tribes in Sri lanka. If Dravidians were natives In the island why those indigenous people not speaking Dravidian language?. Their culture, language also similar to Sinhalese people.
Modern Tamil people of the island came from south india in 10th century AD-12th century AD. In jaffna most of the Tamil people came in colonial era. But they are citizens in Sri Lanka like Sinhalese. They have every rights to live as a citizen in Sri Lanka. But there is no need to create fake history without any evidence because of political agendas.

Native Sri Lankans spoke a language very close to what the Native Wadda speak now, That language was mixed with other introduced Indian languages to form modern day Sinhala language. Still Sinhalese can easily understand what wadda speak.

Majority of North East tamils (Vellalar,Mukkuwar,Kariyar) came srilanka after 13 century to Dutch period from Malabar and Coramandal cast.they have not Connection with Nagas

Which Tamils are you talking about? Tamils were ruling the country when the British came. Estate Tamils were poor people of south India who were Tamils, telugus, malayalees who were tricked and taken to SL, with the promise of better life. No slavery.

And later British too brought Malabar people. Later in 1911, Malabar people were labelled as Tamil. Just see how the Dutch turned the African island Mauritius into an island inhabited by Indians. Same happened to Sri Lanka.

The old name of the island of Sri Lanka is Sinhala. Even the word Eelam is derived from the word Sinhala and it refers to Sinhalese people. There is no meaning in saying Sinhala island is being Sinhalised. It is Sinhala from the beginning. It was Tamilised during the colonial period and that is the root cause of the ethnic problem.
