😂 Jim cracked me up when he said he didn’t care if we liked the stalls, he was the one having to deal with them. Then Brenda was so sweet to soften what he meant.
No problem Jim, the stalls look great and are a nice improvement over the old ones. I am sure if you were to do them 5 times over you may find something you would do a little different.
I hope someone gets you a newer “hammer” action cordless screw gun for Christmas. It makes driving screws/bolts etc so much faster. Plus the newer ones have smaller and better batteries.

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim Yes, Jim may give his opinion and explain why he does something, but I’ve also seen multiple times that he has listened to and thought about a different way someone suggested.
Ultimately he may not change anything if he doesn’t believe it’s a better way. But he seems open minded in general.
I have seen him really listen to what the professionals such as the vet or farrier are telling him about what a horse needs. -And follow their sound advice.
That’s the sign of a true horseman - openness to new ideas or a different way of thinking. Even if they don’t ultimately try it or go with it.
I’ve been working with horses for about 50 years, and I’ve seen a lot of people who claimed to loved their horses and “knew what was best” completely ignore sound advice and think they know it all. Their horses are the ones who suffer so in the end.
So, bravo Jim for telling it like it is, but also being open minded when it is in the horses’ best interests.

People who don’t deal with the freezing weather we deal with (I’m in western NY) have no clue what a challenge it is to water horses in the winter. Your horses went to drink before even going to their stalls, they know the routine & will be fine until morning. I get people who complain I don’t put a blanket on my Norwegian Fjord, if she had a coat like an Arabian or t bred, she’d need one, her breed is from NORWAY - she’s perfectly fine without a blanket. In fact she would sweat, get chilled if she were blanketed. I like the way you screwed down the pads. I once worked in a barn where the horses were in standing stalls & the shavings would get under the mats, made cleaning stalls a challenge - those mats are heavy! Hope the gorilla tape works. You did a great job with the build & I’m sure they will like the extra width when they lay down. Thanks for sharing your journey! God bless!

    • @robertwoelk26
      @robertwoelk26 Před 2 lety +1

Don't worry about the Arabian, we live in Saskatchewan Canada, our Arabians never see a blanket in winter unless we get a mild spell and it rains then freezes, I use a polar fleece just to dry them out, and that would go for any horse breed.

By the way, for my outside stock tanks which are furnished with tank heaters I use those flexible hoses, which I when not in use roll up and throw them into the water. Thereby they never freeze up. I came up with the solution because I got tired of always carefully draining those plastic hoses.

Very nice. The wood all cut by yourself and updated - great accomplishment that many of us wish we could do. I have a little horse that I bought in the year 2000 when he was about 1 yr old. The woman got him at the auction, thinking he would fit in her school horse line up, but he didn't. He was kept in what we call pony stalls, which is what you have for your horses. The mangers had raised bottoms because the ponies couldn't reach the bottoms otherwise. The hay was put in first and any soaked beetpulp or grain was put on top, and the bucket in the manger was water for the night. The pony stalls worked great for all the ponies except for the one I bought. He could undo his clip on the halter to the log weight and get out of his stall. The barn doors had to all be latched to keep him in, and sometimes we found him in other stalls, as he would free who ever had fed left so he could get at it. I have moved barns many times in the 21 years I have had this little boy, and I am happy to say about 5 years ago he stopped being naughty. Thank you for your videos. Love them.

Your horses seem happy. Where do they lie down in there or do they? When I was a kid I had a pony that I just adored. I loved taking care of her & cleaning her stall. I always put 6 to 8 inches of shavings in her stall & it smelled like cedar. I'd clean it every day cleaning up the messes. She had it so good. When she laid down she never felt the floor only a big soft poof mattress. People would comment on how I took such good care of her & I sure did. I loved every minute of it. Brings back such good memories. Animals are so great & horses beautiful.

Hey there Jim, looks like a good job!
I've already expressed my opinion about the size a horses stall should be, so I won't bore you by repeating it again.
Thats a tremendous amount of work to just get water to your stable, not to mention the stalls.
I believe a horse is no different than any other animal, in that it should have access to clean fresh water 24/7 which means in the stall.
There are all types and sizes of heated horse waterer's available, from 1-10 gallons, in either plastic, or stainless, from $20 to $200 to fit any budget.
And that's all I'm going to say about that.
I probably know as well as anyone that there are as many opinions, thought's, idea's, budgets, and applications as there are people, so please don't think that I'm criticizing you and your methods, because I'm not, I only offer my opinions/ideas about things that I have experience with, that's all.

The water set up the way you do it I understand so understanding this, why doesn’t the water freeze in the line to the kiln. Is it delivered underground at a certain depth so the water don’t freeze? Of course if that is the case it is the time to take to dig the line underground to the trough is the problem. I understand that too. Your place and just do it the way you want to do it!
Actually, where I live in Wester Australia, we don’t have that problem and so everything goes underground.

A short hose to roll out and roll back up is a lot less work than carrying buckets. We carried buckets to the pigs- indoors and out and at times when the deep well was out of order carried for the horses, milk cows and beef animals in very cold weather. In decent winter weather the big animals walked to a hole chopped in the pond ice. Often the deep well had to be hand pumped.

Even tho' I watched this when it was first posted it is still a happy episode to rewatch. Your horses are such characters and are really quite inquisitive. I like your effective method of getting water to the horses w/o going through a major construction and excavation project which would also cost quite a bit of money to eliminate stringing a short piece of hose. Best results are generally achieved by keeping it simple.
Your horses are such patient partners for you and the farm it is heart warming. It is easy to wax nostalgic for some of us who grew up on or worked on farms that we forget how hard and sometimes messy it was when we were young. Additionally, even tho' it seems so relaxed and peaceful, I have to remind myself about how hard the manual labor really was and how uncertain the future was due to climate and other things out of your control. Those of us who go on about the serenity of farming never had to pay the bills and balance the budget. Still I am very relaxed after watching your videos.
    Thanks for sharing.

Great job Jim! I will be building horse stalls in the Spring with my Dad as he has 2 percherons. As a kid we’d knock trees down and drag them out of the woods using our horses like you. Brings back great memories! One day we’d love to stop in and visit with you. We enjoying sitting down in the evening and watching your channel! Keep up the great work!!

Looks GREAT, Jim !! I see your son gave you some help to do the installation. Looks bright and airy with all that new lumber !! The belting on the floor sure gives them a more resilient finish !! I could almost see your horses "smiling" as they were led in !!
