Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through CZcams videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

@@Joe_Pomona No I mean some call the American Revolutionary war a civil war, as it was mostly Americans against Americans, very few actual British fought in the US, but because they were British colonies, some say it was a British civil war.

Apparently there was a situation during the rebellion where the British could have blockaded and starved the Americans into submission but it was considered immoral and so would not be acceptable.

But we learnt from that mistake.
When I think of American Independence, I think of it in the same way as a young adult becoming independent of its parents, this can also be a rebellious time.
That's not a negative emotion, it's actually the opposite, especially when that 'parent' was your country and that new adult becomes your best friend in the world, you're proud of them.
I also love seeing Americans being all American about being American, it's endearing to see your love for your flag. It feels the same as my sense of pride in my flag, country and King.

you have to ask yourself why are they watching a reaction channel if they don't want to see your reaction. I like that you stop and ask questions and have a point of view, too many reaction channels watch a video and just say wow that was interesting
We never give it a thought.
The war of independence - mostly British colonials fighting the British establishment. "Americans" as such didn't exist until the war of independence was over. Britain had more important battles to be fought, i.e. with France.
Were the British settlers American is like asking if Jesus was a Christian!
Its just not very important to the British, nay irrelevant.
Over 60 countries have independence days from Britain. America isnt special.
Not at all important to us in England.

Connor, we love you just the way you are - needing to pause frequently, and all... Don't worry about it - those who criticise you do so because they see you as just another American reactor, and not as you personally. Once they get to know you some more, they'll hopefully become less critical. It probably stems from being constantly told in school, things like, "Read the whole question first! It might give you some clues about what its asking for; " or, "Watch the whole video through once, and then go back over it again, with your questions." Only, the second of these is a bit hard to achieve when you're reacting to it for the first time - and your questions are a part of your reaction, isn't it?!!
There will always be people in too much of a rush, who'll lack the patience you need - and my advice to you regarding them is, give them the same amount of due care, respect and attention as they give you - here today and gone tomorrow, eh? The people that matter are those of us who make an effort to understand where you're coming from - and that's because we're your friends, who want to be in good relationship with YOU. It's an example of one of those many things in the world that you can't really change I'm afraid - but you can change the way you let them affect you. It might take a bit of practice, but my advice is, do that - and chill.... okay?
It's not really something we learn about in school because it just was not important historical to us.
As someone else wrote, the 'War' of Independence is clearly a massive thing in America's Hollywood version of taught history.
But to the British, it was just another Tuesday!

2:12 no, North America was not that lucrative for quite some time. One of the reasons the Netherlands traded Manhattan for Suriname and the Banda islands with the British. There was so much more money to be made from those two places (spices like nutmeg and sugar plantations, etcetera).
Btw, did you know the Netherlands was the first country to formally recognize the USA as an independent country? And that they also fought the British in your war of independence? Small group, but still.
I learnt about the War of Independence, it just went out of fashion-far more recent history is taught a lot these days.

I think King George struggled to get over it, but nobody else really cared beyond it being a bit irritating here these rustics going on about it. You are right Connor the colonies were a burden on the British taxpayer, who paid higher taxes than those Yankee freeloaders! That is what caused the problem. The value of the colonies was trade, but we discovered we could trade just as well with you independent as we had while paying to defend you. I say you, but weren't your ancestors tucked up in Ireland and Lancashire at the time Connor? 😂
When I was in the States a few years ago I happened to be there over the 4th of July weekend (which was great fun btw), one of the teenage kids of the family I was staying with asked me if we celebrate or were bitter about the 4th of July in the UK. She was suprised to learn that the vast majority of us genuinely just don't care either way.
I had to explain that sixty something different countries have days that celebrate gaining their independence from us, meaning it averages out to more than once a week, for her to understand why it's just not important to us.
I actually used the following quote from the so-bad-it's-good Street Fighter movie to illustrate the point. "For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me... it was Tuesday."

Silly question time. Why do all the states celebrate 4th of July, considering most of the lands that make up USA were either under Spanish or French colonial rule, or free land of the Native Americans?
Wouldn't it have been better to choose a new date when you became a coast to coast nation?

Connor..I don't mind your pauses as they are genuine pauses, where you comment, react or fact check. That's what your channel is about. I only get irritated by other reactors who pause for the sake of pausing..to ask questions when they never read tgeir Comments so will never actually learn anything, or to wonder about things that are just about to be shown ..which is pointless! One thing I remember learning about American independence is that we then had to start sending our convicts to Australia, instead of Virginia... (as per the lyrics to Steeleye Span's "Gone to America").
yes. As an Australian, I don't think many Aussies even realise that the US was used for convicts before us.
The reality is that there are many British people who not only don't care about the War of Independence, don't even know
that parts of the United States were once British colonies.
When I worked in America some years ago and it was a time I cherished a work colleague took me to Concord where the independence idea first took place.
Now I’m not sure if he was rubbing it in but I signed the visitor book and took it on the chin.

Why would anyone worry about your pauses? You do what you need/wish to do, there is no problem. I would far rather listen to someone making considered comments, at least you are genuine. You have often mentioned your anxiety, which is brave and honest, but it doesn't detract from the points you are making.
Your assessment about the Independence is probably about right. It was kind of inevitable really.
Having an empire is a bit like having children, you don't possess them, they eventually grow up and leave home. Or, as in this case, they throw the parents out of their new adult home 🤔🤗

Wow that will be a short vlog because i know i learnt nothing about US indapendance, i stopped studdying history at 16 which is crazy because i love history. I rememner learning about Vikings ( i did go to school in Scotland) and the industrial revelution also a bit on WW2.

Without the French ,(who still dislike the English to this day) America would not have beaten the British. Also we were busy fighting Napoleon so not much effort was put into fighting the yanks.
Sorry Valerie , your 30 years out ! Napoleon was first couple if decades of 19th century , American independence was was mid to late 1770’s … easily done mixing history up ✊

He served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island. The treacherous Frenchies where everywhere.

Funnily if the generals actualy did their job britain would of crushed the war , dueing battle of new york the british generals decided let americas army retreat but if they didnt they would of wiped out the manority of ameeicas forces and crushed the rebelion
We often forget that distance to the battle is kind of important - it can often be more of factor than the 'might' of the other side, if the war lasts for more than one or two battles, as Afghanistan and Vietnam showed us, even Ukraine - fighting on the other side of the world, even in our lifetimes, is not as easy as fighting on home soil with fresh supplies, friends and loved ones around and knowing what and where everything is. Especially before telegram communications. Hindsight is a convenient thing but since I was a child, I've never thought that England, well, Britain - could ever have won that war. Once you'd decided you wanted out, considering the size of the US - it would likely have taken the British, the French and the Spanish all together, to win. Resistance would have persisted and control of the continent would have been untenable for the European powers - our home countries weren't big enough to supply enough soldiers to cover the US continent and hunt every separatist group down - and you guys had European values, were strictly speaking European subjects - so weren't giving up what you thought was right. I mean Washington would have been tried for treason against the British Crown if he had been caught before the Paris Treaty. Upon being signed, he became American, as did the rest. It's a bloody great founding [true enough for once] story. Not being British may allow me to appreciate it differently though.
The colonists where other nationalities too when declaring independence, so Britain should not get all the credit 😊
I remember from school that John Morton was of finnish decendance, and of course there was a footnote of that in a finnish history book 😉

It amazes me that some Americans believe we should celebrate the 4th July in the same way they do. Hey, we lost. Do you celebrate Guy Fawkes Day. Why don’t you celebrate the day when British forces burnt the official buildings in Washington, to hide the burn marks you painted it white, and thought that perhaps we better call it the White House. When we visit the US we can’t get a proper cup of tea. We reckon the reason why is because US tea is terrible because your recipe is it must first be thrown into Boston Harbor, chant a line or two abouta Taxation or Voting. Let it soak then make tea with it but use a diabetic portion of sugar to take the taste of salt away.

Thinking about this I would see as traitorous had I been alive at the time because the people rose up against their loyal king.
However considering how history went from that period too the current day, without America intervention in both world wars it would be doubtful if were victorious.
I am almost certain that we would have lost WW2 had it not been for America’s support.
So you could argue that by losing that continent it saved our bacon nearly 270 later.

Technically i don't think even you pause enough to meet the strictest definitions of the laws surrounding copyright, fair use etc.
