I used to listen to her on the radio when I was younger. Now she reminds me of Jeanne Robertson…2 lovely, classy ladies who were able to find the humour in all sorts of situations but never stooped to using foul language or being mean or vicious to or about anyone or anything. I’m sure you are both doing command performances in heaven!

Arguably the finest comedienne to come out of England post-war. Not just a talent and a gift for mimicry , but sheer class. She was not only funny but very nice. That is why we loved her. She was taken from us far too soon.

My neighbour, Mrs Fanshaw, is portly, plump and gay.
She must be over sixty-seven if she is a day.
You might have thought her life was dull. It's one long whirl instead.
I asked her all about it, and this is what she said:
I've joined an Old Time Dance Club. The trouble is that there
Are too many ladies over, and no gentlemen to spare.
It seems a shame; it's not the same, but still it has to be:
Some ladies have to dance together. One of them is me.
So stately as a galleon I sail across the floor,
Doing the Military Two-step as in the days of yore.
I dance with Mrs Tiverton. She's light on her feet, in spite of
Turning the scale at fourteen stone, and being of medium height.
So gay the band, so giddy the sight, full evening dress is a must.
But the zest goes out of a beautiful waltz
When you dance it bust to bust.
So, stately as two galleons, we sail across the floor,
Doing the Valse Valeta as in the days of yore.
The gent is Mrs Tiverton and I am her lady fair.
She bows to me ever so nicely and I curtsey to her with care.
So gay the band, so giddy the sight, but it's not the same in the end.
For a lady is never a gentleman, though she may be your bosom friend.
So, stately as two galleons, we sail across the floor,
Doing the dear old Lancers, as in the days of yore.
I'm led by Mrs Tiverton. She whirls me round and round
And though she manoeuvres me wonderfully well
I never get off the ground.
      So gay the band, so giddy the sight, I try not to get depressed;
And it's done me a power of good to explode
And get this lot off my chest.

In response to Humphrey Reader: Indeed there is a degree of sadness in the lyrics. One aspect of Joyce Grenfell's brilliance was her ability to move people to both laughter and tears almost simultaneously. It is the laughter for which she is best remembered, for everyone loves to laugh, but some of her more serious monologues are also excellent. I have long been a fan, but (thanks to a link from this page) the other day I watched another of Joyce Grenfell's tears AND laughter monologues, which was new to me. It's "First Flight". As an ex-pat, I found it very funny, but also incredibly moving. I recommend it. And I am so grateful to Quityertalkin and others who have posted videos of this superb performer!

I think that Joyce Grenfell's great ability was to appreciate other people's predicaments, explore them truthfully and then present them with warmth and a humorous touch. On the surface this is a comic song / portrait for all, but it would have spoken very much to the numerous ladies of a certain age who had lost their men during WW2.
A lot of ladies lived companionship with other women in that post war period because so many men did not return. Movements like the Towns Women's guild and Women's Institute were very strong in those years and I guess some ladies had very few men of their own generation in their social circle. That certainly puts a different perspective on this song.

It amazes still that in a picture featuring Jane Wyman, Alistair Sym, Marlene Dietrich and Richard Todd, her bit at the charity bazaar is what I remember most from that film.

Are there any forerunners to Joyce Grenfell ? As in holding the stage for a whole show, minimal props or extra costuming, just presenting characters by pure observation ?
I love that every move seems to have been considered and honed to perfection for maximum effect. A total professional.
(Kudos to her MD and long-time collaborator too, pianist William Blezard_)
I wonder if Lily Tomlin was inspired by her in the 70s ?
