Removed Broken Sprag Clutch of Royal Enfield Motorcycle

- Sprag clutch transmits rotational power from electric starter motor to crankshaft via engine sprocket in one direction. It can break on piston kick back when engine is shut off or stalls or during starting.
On a cold morning start, the engine of my UCE Royal Enfield motorcycle G5 2009 stalled and broke sprag on kick back with a metallic sound 'KTUK'. Removed the damaged sprag and reassembled bike without it. Now I use kick lever to start.

Thanks a million for this video. I am not a mechanic by any means; but I followed step by step and it worked! Total cost was $59 for the clutch and $3 for the ATF. A repair manual I found on the internet suggested 14oz of ATF in the primary.
+Zelroc Llid : My motorcycle is UCE (unit construction engine) that uses only one oil which circulates from engine to clutch, to transmission and to valves. It takes Motul semi-synthetic or synthetic 15W-50 motorcycle oil or its equivalent. There is no separate oil for primary. UCE motorcycles do NOT take ATF. /////....... ////.Older models of Royal Enfield motorcycle including iron barrel and AVL engines have separate oils in different compartments and use ATF.
Thanks very much for this video and also the one that shows the box where possible to see the part number. So I ordered the spag clutch from India using ebay and get it here to Finland in 9 days. I don´t know so much about how to repair motorbike, but by using your video, now my Enfield starts well, so back to the road.
I have a 2008 AVL engine.
Mine has broken this FOUR times. I take that out and I use the kick start now. I can not undertand how RE has redesigned their engine to a new one and still have the same problem that older models.
You are right AVL had more problems with sprags.
Newer bikes with new sprag are much better and have very few failures as compared to AVL. There are literally thousands of new bikes running fine, covering lot of miles without this problem.
The video does not show how sprag broke. It was a cold morning when I started the bike without using bistarter. The engine was hesitating, I abruptly jerked throttle open, engine stalled immediately with back pressure that broke the old sprag. My bike had 29,000 miles on it with original sprag. They break when the engine stops but piston is moving up weakly, unable to overcome pressure and is pushed back.
For AVL it is advisable to stop engine with decompressor. Do not turn OFF engine by key. Also keep the battery fully charged all the time.

Luckily my 08 AVL has not broken its Sprag (yet). I had presumed the G5's and the like no longer had the issue but must be even later models. I also overfill the primary with Automatic transmission Fluid (ATF) type-F using a full quart/liter believing more keeps sprag lubricated better. As you say, however, they don't spin ever backwards without breaking.
i have a 2014 model classic.my doesn't self start and now i kick star.the mechanic says the sprag clutch has to be changed.should i change it immediately?is it bad for the bike if i only kick start the bike not using the self start

I am considering to buy a RE which has this problem, the previous owner tried to fix it and he stripped the thread on the gearbox output shaft. Can you advice me how to go about that please? Thank you very much.
Can the sprag be removed? And I want to run my B5 without self starter sprag etc.. I want to use the kick only. How can it be done? Here service center guys say it'll cost about 18k rupees for removing self starter completely..help. I have broken sprag that gives me trouble everytime.

These upgraded sprag clutch assembly has been designed to fit newer UCE EFI models. ;;;;;; ;;;;; I have heard that it may fit in late model AVL engine BUT one must verify the dimensions of the chamber where it is housed and make sure that other features are compatible with the motorcycle model.

Hi do the pinions and clutch always come of so easily or is a puller needed advice much appreciated.
Clutch and front sprocket generally come out without much problem.

If sprag clutch is broken, the engine will not start when electric start button is pushed. It may make clunky sounds when trying to start the bike. Or you hear the gears spinning but the engine does not start. One way to protect sprag clutch is to keep the battery fully charged to avoid slow cranking of the engine that can allow the piston to stop on the compression stroke and piston push back in reverse that can break sprag clutch as it rotates the clutch in reverse direction. Sprags are meant to turn in one direction only. Sprag clutch can also break when engine is turned off because piston slows down at compression. The autodecompressor helps to release high engine pressure and protect sprag. If it breaks it is best to immediately remove and clean out any broken pieces, even though the engine can be started by kick lever. /// Newer bikes have a sturdy sprag clutch which is less likely to break. Hi, this is nice video, my 350CC electra has started showing symptoms which lead me to believe that the starter sprag is broken, I get a loud noise when I try to start the bike using the electric started. Is that what you observed as well, before you decided to change it?
Hi Bharath, if you are getting loud sound like someone hammering your engine then the issue would be with the sprag clutch assembly which you might have to replace, I own a bullet 500 EFI and I had the same issue too, till now I have replace twice, 1st time I got covered under warranty but I again had to change recently and it costed me a bomb (4.7k inc tax), I am not sure what is the price for Electra but these are the symptoms, if you have warranty then better get it replaced and do not use kick start if you have self in RE not recommended as it might lead to wear and tear of Sprag.. RE parts sucks big time..
teju nagaraj thanks for that. Yes I figured out that it's the starter sprag. The component costs close to 5k now. I haven't replaced it yet coz I think i can use my bike in the present condition for some more time. Unfortunately my bike is close to 2 years old, so there is no question of warranty. I have heard that even after changing some people are facing the issue again and you are right about the abysmal quality of spares supplied by RE.
Will the newer stronger sprague clutch fit the '08 AVL , and the iron barrel bullets?
I am not sure if the new sprag will fit AVL or iron barrel. If I find out, I will post a comment.
Singh did you by chance ever find out if the newer stronger sprag clutch fit the AVL (2008) models?
I personally have not done it on an AVL. There was one person who had an AVL and had told me that his mechanic had done it for his bike. But I was not physically there to confirm this information. I wish I could be more definite about its fit to AVL.
In servicing first he replaced chain lock and informed to change the chain. finally he replaced all three ball bearings of tear wheel, chain.Now no noise coming.

I have removed decommpressor pin does it have any side effect to 350 uce
+Sandeep singh j : Some riders have removed the auto decompressor and so far their bikes are running fine. Keep in mind that the hydraulic lifters now must go over the gap of 'groove' where the pin normally rests in the cam. The long term effect of removing just the pin is not known - though one can argue many different ways and aspects of auto decompressor functions and drawbacks. But as of now enjoy the bike without much worries. Keep the oil clean and change it frequently with correct amount.
