      The Lynx BMS is a great unit IF you're using Victron Batteries. If you're not using Victron Batteries, it doesn't really make sense to use in most cases. The Victron Smart LiFePO4 batteries are great, but the external BMS makes them a significantly more complicated installation and commissioning for DIYers, which is why we don't show them much on this channel. We released a video with those Batteries a year ago, and the general consensus from the audience was that it was too complex.

    Love these videos! I've re-done my entire system with Battleborn, Victron and Go-Power solar panels and my next project is to add a multiplus ii and clean up the wiring with the Lynx distributor using the info I've learned from your videos. Meanwhile, hopefully you or a reader can help with a problem I've encountered: I hooked up a Victron Smart shunt to serve as a DC meter for my water pump. My thought that the energy use meter would be a much more precise gauge for the water usage than the unreliable water gauge on the panel. And I think it would be, but the problem is that the calibration in the consumed energy meter (in DC meter mode) is in tenths of a kWh. So one "click" on the meter is 100 wH. This is not helpful, because the water pump only draws 69 watts, and the water tank is 60 gallons. The pump would pump the entire tank before the meter registers one click! Is there a way to change the "scale" of the meter to watt hours instead of kilowatt hours? Or some other workaround? Thanks for any help.

    After learn a lot from your videos (every time its a learn in progres for understand and make better choices) I have remake my electrical system for offroad/overland jeep jku, simple and efficient and since then now have less cables/ junk junctions thats make more failure points and a lot of weight and waste of space!!!     thanks, Nate! The graph that breaks down all of the shunt’s traits is very useful. TBH, I will just trust in your blueprints that I purchased. But, now that I think about it, you may wanna offer different shunt set ups with your blueprints.

      Definitely! I think the BMV-712 will stay as the default in my full diagrams as I think it's the best bang for your buck in most cases. That said, I'm planning on adding an additional page to all of our diagrams that would show how to connect it into a system with the Cerbo GX with the Lynx Shunt OR the bmv-712/smartshunt. Also... our 'Lynx Distributor Wiring Kits' already include a BMV-712 vs Lynx Shunt option with multiple wire sizes.     I specifically used the BMV-712 to stop the Orion DC-DC charger from charging when the temp was too low. I used cheaper lithium that didn't have the low temp cut off. I'm building a current van and going with the BMV-712 again. The physical gauge is a must for me in a van. Great explanation of theses products.

    I have 2 completely different battery banks hooked up to my motorhome. I have a 560ah homemade batt with the 712 and I have 3x100ah renogy lifepo4 Batts on a renogy monitor. I'm thinking I should take the renogy monitor away and add the smart shunt. Maybe this way I can monitor both batt banks online.

    If you use a Victron AIO MPPT/ Grid-tie/ Inverter, like the Multi RS Solar, would a shunt (any of them) provide any additional information over what you'd get without it?

    The smart shunt needs some setup, but how do I know my lifepo4s amount of charge.
    I have 400 watts of panels and live in sunny AZ, but my 300 ah battery has never gone in to float or absorb yet. Thanks for your answer.

    Battery shunt question. I currently own the Alley Shunt voltmeter 350 amps. I want to connect it to my 2013 Itasca ellipse QD 42. My coach has six AGM batteries. The current configuration is 1 3/0 neutral connection on battery 1 feeding the 2800-watt inverter and the other 3/0 cable on battery 6 going to the frame of the coach. Do I take both 3/0 cables and connect to the shunt then from the shunt back to battery 1 & 6?

    What is the sense of the fuse in the Lynx shunt? Its ratet for 1000A but there are no 1000A megafuses.
    My system shall have 900A going through the busbars.

    Nate, I bought a bunch of stuff from the website a few weeks ago, including your diagram, lynx, Orion, wiring kits etc.. and just got it all wired up. My Orion runs really hot after about 45 min, and I have it mounted out in the open. Not enclosed. Used #6 wire ancor wire and everything. Also noticed a electronics type smell in the van. Not burnt out electronics, just a different smell. Wanted to make sure this wasn’t a concern before I start looking into fans and such to mitigate problems

      The Orion does indeed run a bit hot, but not so hot you can't touch it or anything. Make sure the firmware is all updated as there was a firmware update that fixed it a bit, but it still is indeed quite warm when it's operating at full capacity.
      As far as the smell, with new electronics, there is sometimes a weird smell that goes away after it's been used for a bit. See if you can narrow down where it's coming from to make sure there isn't a loose connection or something somewhere.

    Great video as always! Have you installed a Wakespeed WS500 in any of your designs? I’m going with a Nations 3-belt alternator and BB GC3 with internal BMS; no CANbus. Trying to get the puzzle pieces to fit together.

    Nate, very nice as always, if someone was to DIY their own battery (like Eve 280Ah prismatic cells) and using a Bluetooth capable BMS, how are these different? Do they provide basically the same information as a BMS would?

    Great video Nate, I was looking at either the smart shunt or the BMV-712 but am concerned about the user feedback on the Bluetooth range of the smart shunt. We’re you able to get a comparison of the range one can expect on each of these units?

      Actually that’s the big difference between the two units. The smart shunt Bluetooth is in the unit whereas the 712 Bluetooth is in the remote display.
      So I always recommend the 712 because your batteries usually tucked away possibly on the tongue of your trailer while the remote display will be mounted inside. Therefore you get a much better signal while you’re in the trailer with the 712.

    Hey Nate, I've been a subscriber for a while now and have learned a ton from your videos. Pretty much built my entire system from all the knowledge I gained from you in the last couple of years. (All Victron and BattleBorn) Then to top everything off, after learning about you and your family's fire service history, I felt a closer connection and knew you were genuine and trustworthy. I am a retired 30 year fire service veteran and have lost several co-workers/friends to work related cancer. (I know the pain and loss) Now, I have what is probably a stupid question but can't find a definitive answer. I currently have a BVM-712 that I monitor with bluetooth, but want to do it remotely with my wifi/router setup in my 5th wheel. Can I use the Cerbo GX without buying the Touch 50 by using the Victon's VRM app?

      Not Nate, but using a headless Cerbo. Most things you can do without a Touch GX connected, over the remote console.
      For initial setup, it can be helpful to have local access. A standard HDMI monitor and USB mouse work.

      The touch 50 IS a physical gauge in the wall... but if you want to round one from the BMV-712 AND the touch 50... you'd just use the bmv-712 w/ gauge + the cerbo gx and touch 50gx. The Cerbo GX would be connected to the BMV-712 via VE.Direct cable.

    Due to tight spaces, I needed my wiring to come in on the opposite side of the BMV-712. To accomplish this, I unscrewed the circuit board on the shunt and flipped it upside down so the wiring to the battery would be on the correct side.

    Good vid, thanks for sharing this info. I am considering to buy a BMV-712 mainly to control a small house Hotwater system in my bus as a solar dump for when my batteries are full SOC around lunchtime usually.
    I have a 24v 10kw lithium battery bank, 2kw solar pv, and a 3kw MPPT AIO system, Q) what sort of relay/contactor gear is available for the BMV-712? Cheers

      The Relay Out specs for the BMV-712 can be found in section 8 of the user manual. You can use this relay out to control any 3rd party relay that falls within those parameters.

    Great video. How do you install a SmartShunt in a Sprinter with a factory under hood aux battery which has the negative battery terminal grounded to chassis? Was thinking of putting the waterproof one under the hood by the aux battery. We have a BlueSea fuse block for our maxxair fan, espar D2, and other accessories hooked up to the output of the battery isolator relay under driver seat, as is typically done, and the negative from the fuse block is grounded to chassis under the seat. Do I need to run the negative from the fuse block back up to under the hood to the other side of the SmartShunt?

      If you are trying to monitor the state of charge of the aux battery, the shunt would need to go between the aux battery and EVERYTHING else (starter battery & loads).

    Thanks Nate, nice and short, but... It sure raises a ship load of questions. I am interested in how the Lynx can be used to control the temperature of the "electronics" storage space (specifically, high and low temp control of exhaust fans or battery warming pads). Any suggestions? Also, I would imagine the temp probes on all of these can control "battery shut-off" in high and low temp conditions Right?

      I assume you're asking about the Lynx Shunt + Cerbo GX. If so... I'd recommend using the temperature sensors and relays on the Cerbo GX. You'd connect the temperature sensor to the Cerbo GX and then the other end of the temperature sensor wire to 'wherever' you like (could literally sit in the electrical enclosure if you like) and then set up the temperature sensor to control one of the relay outputs. If it's just an enclosure fan, you could likely power it directly from the relay output (depending on size of fan) or if it's a heater, you'd use the relay output to control a relay for the heater. Chapter 2.12 of the cerbo gx manual is where all of this is covered (manual can be found on the victron website)
      I plan on making a video about controlling an enclosure fan through the cerbo gx soon.

    If I used a bmv-712 with any other component other that victron would it monitor it properly on cerbo GX and the accompanying screen?
    For example: if I used a sun gold power inverter?

      The bmv-712 will show how much power is passing through it regardless of what brands of components are on either side of the system.

    Is there anyone out there who has problems with the LYNX Shunt 1000 showing the wrong voltage? Mine here shows about 0,2V less than the other Victron devices in the system and is definitely wrong when you compare the measured value with a very good multimeter.

    Can you connect a GX-50 to the shunt that comes with the 712?
    What does the Cerbo GX do? I don't need wifi to monitor, not even sure I need bluetooth since most of our camping is areas without cell service and I don't want to be glued to my phone.

      The Cerbo GX needs to be between the 712 and Touch 50. The Cerbo GX is essentially the 'motherboard' in which all of the peripheral components are plugged into. That info is 'gathered and organized' by the cerbo gx and then passed on to the touch 50/70 for display.

    For now i have my Victron Mppt Control Display (which cost me about 85 euros) pluged on my Victron 100/50 Mppt Charger (more practical for me using that than a Mppt with bluetooth) working on a small 12v 3Kw off-grid system. Its not that hard to watch the voltmeter of the display and know how much energy still have since i know 12.1 volts are about the 50% of my battery bank. The inverters are programmed to shut down and protect my batteries anyway. Very wellmade and informative video.

      @@EXPLORISTlife It does work good for lead/acid batteries because they have almost linear charge/discharge. I have AGM. But if i had llithium batteries i would really need a battery shunt because lithium doesnt go linear.

    If the BMS on your battery (like an EG4 LL v2) communicates with the Cerbo GX, there's no reason for a separate shunt, is there?

    Would there be a reason for the average conversion to need the 1000amp version of the shunt? I'm over specing my solar and power system to run 240 volt for electric vehicle charging and am planning to have a vary large battery capacity. Would I need the bigger shunt too? Also a video on doing 240v or dual inverter systems would be awesome.

      I can see no reason to need the 1000a version of the shunt, no. If inverting needs are from 3000W-6000W, I'm recommending 24V battery banks, which keeps amperage down to only 250A. If somebody needs more inverting power than that (and no DC loads), I'll recommend 48V system w/ dual Victron Quattro's and VE.Panels and run those in battery monitor mode, which means a shunt is no longer necessary.

      This is one of the biggest downfalls of the Lynx Shunt. It isn't able to connect to the VictronConnect via Bluetooth. If you want to view battery percentage via your phone with a Lynx Shunt system; your Lynx Shunt -> Cerbo/Ekrano GX must be connected to the internet, and then you can view that data on the VRM portal.

    Nate, I absolutely this channel and have learned a lot, but I’m a numb nut. I installed a Victron smartshunt and when I look at the voltage can see if my battery is doing ok or not, but I don’t know what the other numbers mean. Could you please do a video on interpreting the numbers as if you are talking to a 5 year old. This will be soooooo helpful. I get that guys like me aren’t an audience for this channel but this will be so good for us.

    Hi. I just purchased the diagram for the 3000k MP with 400+ ah and up to 1250W solar, but I didn't realize it didn't include the info for the Linx shunt or Cerbo. Where do I find that diagram? Thanks!

      That diagram doesn't include Lynx Shunt and Cerbo integration, but we will have an update to that diagram soon that shows it. Submit a support ticket at shop.explorist.life/support and I'll make sure you get the updated version when it is live. In the meantime, the Cerbo GX online manual does a REALLY good job of showing how all of that is connected.

    As stand alone units in smaler systems, Iprefer bmv-712 ( yes, more expensive) for the reason that it has a larger area for bluetooth coverage. I have both. With smartshunt you need to stand quite close. Bmv-712 screen, well, fast look and you have the info without having the phone. Maybe newer smartshunt has larger bluetooth coverage? Mine is 2 years..

    The Bluetooth range difference between the 712 and the smartshunt is huge. I’m talking 1m to 15m. Should count as a feature difference.

      @@EXPLORISTlife Hardware or software fix? I’m not aware of either. My SmartShunt is about 2 years old. Specifically chose it as I didn’t want the screen. Definitely would have gone with the 712 had I known the range would be an issue.

    Question: I have four 12v 200ah batteries wired 2s2p (24v @ 400ah) being charged with a Victron 150/60. The Victron defaults to 28.4v absorption and 27v float. I just wired a smart shunt and trying to figure out the settings. Suggestion for "charged voltage" settings? There's conflicting information online. Thank you if you can help out!

      Set that to .2V lower than the absorption voltage of your charger.

      Ru talking about a 24v - 12v Buck Inverter & a Lynx Shunt? If so, a 24-12v step down inverter would need to go after your Shunt. Battery then shunt then load.

    Thanks Nate and Steph. I happen to have all 3 of those devices, don't ask me why, : ) but I'm going to use the Lynx Shunt and try to unload the other 2 on eBay or something. I'm assuming it does not really benefit me to use more than just the Lynx Shunt??

      Haha, oops! You could use the SmartShunt on the Negative wire going to your DC fuse panel as a DC Meter in conjunction with the Lynx Shunt. Not a system necessity, but still a neat feature nontheless.

    I am using the smart shunt with another vendors MPPT SCC while boondocking. I’d get too about 80% SOC overnight but as soon as the sun came up and the SCC started charging the Smart shunt would immediately show 100% SOC. That doesn’t seem right. Is there something wrong in my setup? If SOC isn’t accurate it isn’t very valuable.

      The SOC is VERY accurate on these units. Inaccuracies are usually due to improper settings. Verify both your MPPT and SmartShunt have proper parameters for whatever batteries you are using.

      @@EXPLORISTlife both are set for Lithium. As soon as the MPPT starts charging, the Victron reports 100% SOC. The batteries are BT and their BMS accurately reports the right SOC. Somehow the Smart Shunt is getting fooled by there being 0 or low current flooring towards the batteries.

      @@phill4435 The 'lithium' setting isn't an 'across the board' setting. For example... Victron lithium wants a max of 14.2 and Battle Born wants 14.4-14.6. Big difference there. You'll need to contact your battery supplier for support and guidance there regarding the proper parameters.

      I think he means having a DCDC charger and MPPT charger simultaneously charging? If so, yes you can have all those connected at once.

    Isn’t an important difference between these shunts the location of the ve direct socket. The BMV 712 has the socket on the display while the smart shunt and the others are at the shunt. This could create additional wiring difficulties when adding a Cerbo GX.

      Correct. The BMV-712 Ve.Direct port is on the physical gauge. The SmartShunt has the VE.Direcct port on the actual shunt. I don't usually see people running into issues with that; but that is indeed an additional difference.

      I use a Lynx BMS 500 on the battery side of my Lynx Distributors; next on the + is a system on/off switch then an ANL 400A fuse on the + between the on/off and the Victron batteries.

      @@turnpike420 I haven't hooked up my system as of yet.... but isn't there a magnet switch in the BMS? I thought you can wire it to a Cerbo GX and use the touchscreen or wire the Lynx BMS to create a physical switched disconnect? Is that true?

      There are no place to install MEGA fuses on the Lynx In....

    The comparison is good but I would have like to find the real differences between those products, those differences thare not obvious... Like the bistable relay in the 712.

      Once you understand the differences as shown in this video; you can use the data sheets to drill down even further into any of those micro-differences. This video was aimed more toward those who don't know the 'obvious' differences as we get WAAAAY more questions about that stuff than people wanting to learn about the bistable relay functions.

    I went with the SmartShunt in my system since I was going to have a Cerbo GX and Touch 50. The SmartShunt has Bluetooth and VE Direct connection so it works well with the Cerbo GX. It also has a temperature sensor input available so you can stop the MPPT from charging at freezing temperatures. The BMV-712 display seemed superfluous. Any features that the BMV-712 has that the SmartShunt doesn't, are not important to me. I didn't go for the Lynx Shunt because of its size. The relay outputs on the Cerbo GX are basically unusable for anything other than starting a generator if you don't know how to program them. You didn't mention the tank level inputs on the Cerbo GX. I'm using those to monitor my fresh and gray tank levels so I don't have to have other gauges.

      The SmartShut + Cerbo GX + Touch 50/70 is a great combo and is usually what I recommend for those wanting the functionality of the Cerbo but don't care about the clean form factor of the Lynx Shunt.
      There's a LOT I didn't mention about the Cerbo GX, like the tank monitoring, since this isn't a Cerbo GX video.

      You can also use just the standalone Victron temp sensor to control low temperature cutoff off the MPPT charge, without any of these shunts.

    I've read most of the comments and although you've presented a "pretty" video, you didn't address the big problem with Victon. The vast amount of interconnection incompatibility. Bluetooth, WiFi, IP, NEMA, VE Direct, Smart Dongle, CAN-Bus, USB, MPPT, and probably more, means that setting up a system requires a Degree in IT. The Victon "Connections" Manual is over 80 pages. In addition, software upgrades happen nearly every 3 months. My system is offline 50% of the time because of a glitch issue somewhere. Power off of the entire system (which is very basic) is the only way to get it going again. Again, from reading the comments, I believe Victron needs to simplify their systems.

      I disagree wholeheartedly. If you want to use each and every single function of the unit, yes, you will need to be proficient at understanding technical language and such. If you want to use it to view all the necessities, that stuff is pretty straightforward.
      Much like using a computer: if you want to just be able to browse the internet, make documents and spreadsheets, view/edit pictures, and watch videos, it's pretty easy. If you want to develop your own web application, you are going to need to know much more.

    Smart Shunt is really 'smart', it already predicted every user has a 'smart phone' handy to display its data.
