Classic Movie Review: In MGM ‘s wartime romance, THE CLOCK, director Vincente Minnelli takes
future wife Judy Garland out of the musical spot light and into the arms of soldier
Robert Walker for her first serious, romantic drama. With a supporting cast headed by Keenan
Wynn and James Gleason, it’s a delightfully tender and touching, romantic
travelogue of New York during World War II and did much to establish Garland as a
serious actress. You ‘ll be beguiled by the chemistry of Garland at her loveliest and
Walker at his sincerest. STEVE HAYES Tired Old Queen at the Movies

I adore this movie , such an underrated movie .. Judy was so good in this .. A must watch and own if you are a fan of Judy .. Thanks Steve for doing this review
I agree with you! She didn't need to sing! She was just that good!
It's looks like going good Judy Garland she's made into store story about the same documentary about biography book club and make it happen to her about it take to be there in a bit of a few minutes before I was calling back to look like she feels like almost every day she was
Finally, a review that does this movie justice! Seen it countless times and it's wonderful. Thank you, Steve.
This is my all time favorite film. What a rough life Robert Walker had but what a legacy of great acting he left us!
I agree!
It's been too long, Steve, between reviews. You've got to do them more frequently. Great personality, great review!
Ps your reviews are positively addicting and getting me thru covid. Only What's my line episodes can compare!!
Outstanding review, Steve!---A fun fact is that the story "The Clock" was written by Paul Gallico who later wrote the novel "The Poseidon Adventure" the movie version of which you've also reviewed!
WOW I DIDN'T KNOW THAT! THANKS! 😀!
This has to be one of my favorite Judy movies.😍 She is wonderful in this. The Clock is a romantic gem.
Have only recently found this wonderful channel. Thank you mr Hayes for giving us true happiness and smiles.
My pleasure!
Love that scene where Keenan Wynn as the drunk pesters Angela Landsbury’s mom.
Thanks for the excellent review! I first saw this movie 1987 as part of a local college's Summer movies.I was a fan of Judy Garland but not yet a major fan. This is a very romantic story and Judy does look so lovely in itI wish MGM,had let her do more dramatic roles.Later on she was so good in "A child is waiting""Judgement at Nuremberg" and "I could go on singing".I bought "The Clock" on DVD last year for Christmas an have yet to see it again.I will be watching it soon.
Hello Steve! I had totally forgotten this film; caught it once on TCM ages ago and was really taken with its charms. I love the things you notice, like all the extras at the train station and how each of them seems to have his/her own little story going on. Love stuff like that in a movie. It's so realistic and fun.
By the way, might I suggest (if it's not too much toil) that you make a fun blooper reel or a highlights video, complete with some of your funniest impressions and bits from videos past. That would be delightful to see here. You are the sort of quality entertainer who I imagine could captivate and regale a crowd in a piano bar with your humor and talent. Hope to see more of you on CZcams soon!
One of my favorite old movies to watch. Judy Garland was such a sweetheart! 🥰
Well we in ENGLAND ARE SLOWLY COMING OUT OF LOCKDOWN from corona virus.... What a time better time it has been for watching old movies... This one I will watch and I'm sure enjoy... IT has felt like wartime with the restrictions..
.. as you say just watching the extras is entertainment in its self 🌈💋❤️love Judy Garland
Dear Henretta; Well, be careful and stay safe. I still don't think they know enough yet not to take proper precautions. I'm snuggled in watching endless episodes f "Midsomer Murders"...I have family reunions supposedly coming up and I need some tips! Much love and thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Such a beautiful movie, so many memorable scenes that have stayed with me since I first watched this years ago. Perfectly reviewed as ever Steve!!
RIGHT! 😀
You just get better and better. I love your reviews. You totally get these films!!!
Thanks, David! I so apreciate your kind words. Thanks for watching and please take care and stay SAFE! Best; Steve
I'm completely hooked on Steve Hayes 'Tired Old Queen at the Movies' reviews. They bring back all the nostalgia of having seen them in the first place. Keep 'em comin' comin', you ole queen.
Dear Monica; What a lovely compliment! Thank you so much and thanks for watching! I hope you are well and SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
The painted backdrop at the top of the escalators in the Penn Station scene still exists! I saw it displayed at the actual Grand Central Station about 2007. Also the backdrop of the UN lobby for North by Northwest.
One of my absolute FAVORITE films! SO glad to see you cover this one; an underrated gem if ever there was one.
So romantic, so pure, so beautifuly shot...just a lovely, lovely film, from start to finish. Saw this for the first time on TCM when I was about 15, and I've loved it ever since.
Steve, from one classic film lover to another, thank you for your reviews! It's like listening to my best friend (if he actually knew *anything* about classic movies)!
Oh my gosh, what a lovely compliment! Thank you so much for watching! As for "The Clock" it's the work of that incredible team of Garland and Walker, under the guidance of Minnelli, who I always maintain, is one of the great underrated directors. Known and thought of primarily for his musicals, he was terrific in so many genres. "The Bad and the Beautiful' is one of my top ten favorite films of all time.
I love a good Judy musical, but this is definitely one of my favorite Judy films. ❤️
Yes, it's really lovely and they're both so good. Thaks for watching! Best; Steve
Steve Hayes, nobody does it better! An excellent review of a terrific film.
How fun..I'll have to see this film.. Robert Walker, Jr. looked so much like his Dad. wow! Judy was lovely, always lovely... outstanding job Steve, as always.
Yes Jr looked just like him. He passed away last year I think.
@@andytaylor5476 ..yes he did sad to say.
Such a good movie and just when you think Judy might break into song (in the milk wagon when they are listening to the radio) she doesn't!! Thanks for doing these reviews!
If you ever get a chance, do A Child is Waiting with Judy and Burt Lancaster
A Child is Waiting is a great movie.
What talent you have Steve, classic storyteller, just so excellent...
Thank you, Dear Heart! Sending you hugs and much love! ❤️
What a lovely review of a terrific movie. Steve, you do an excellent job!!
I love all of your reviews and the movies you pick! I’ve always wanted an alternate reality of this movie as a film noir, where Judy plays a New York cabaret singer that is singing “If I Had You” when the leading man on military leave walks into the bar. Some noir-ish mystery/suspense story ensues, where at some point Judy is singing at the cabaret again when the villain walks in, and she has to escape or warn the leading man from the stage. And finally a recasting of the leading man as Guy Madison…..beautiful then, especially in military outfit. The wooden acting ability is somehow all the more charming, and a good contrast to the natural Judy acting. Let’s time travel, and put on a show!
What a terrific idea and I love you scenario...except for Guy Madison. I would have cast him as a beautiful/ner-do-well/ irresistable, brother dabbles in the underworld, meets Garland briefly in the begining, then is bumped off before he has time to act and Robert Walker, his older brother, comes to meet Garland who was the last person to see him alive. They are suspicious of each other at first , then join forces, fall in love and solve the mystery. "The Clock" was the most dramatic MGM ever allowed her to be. If she'd been at Warners or RKO, this might very well have been done. Sorry to run on, you got my TOQ imagination going. Thanks so much for the fun comments and for watching! Happy Holdays! Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 I think between us, we have a plot! Happy Holidays!
A sweet, tender, loving film, and you do it justice, Steve. Glad to have you back with us!
ADORE this film. It is a MUST MUST MUST watch. Thank you for reviewing it.
Good review Steve. I love this movie. I used to watch it with my grandparents, and I still watch it when I need a pick me up movie.
Hi Steve Hayes, you have probably already noticed this: The scene in the little restaurant was shot using the ding room from "Meet Me in St Louis". You can see the elaborate curlicues up in the corners of the room divider. (I always have a quick look around the sets)...keep up the great work.
OMG... why am I just finding you, I love your reviews, especially since you love all of my movies too. I can't stop watching. Thank you.
Thank you, Bob! I hope you subscribe and thanks so much for the sweet compliments and for watching! Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I subscribed immediately and I'm halfway through all your reviews.
As always, so interesting and crammed with insights and peeks into depths. A treat.....like rich chocolate. Wish it could last longer. I also love seeing the depth and sweetness of our reviewer/teacher (YOU!!, dear Steve) being revealed. Love from San Diego, CA.
Hope your hibernation is doing well Steve.. Plz if your health allows keep these gems coming!!! Gby love you and miss you and Johnny!!!💋💞💞💞💞🌈💐🌼🌹🌸🌷🍀🌻🌺💯
I just watched it, and it is wonderful, but there’s something tragic about it because Judy Garland’s and Robert Walker’s real life didn’t have as much happiness as they deserved
Which is why I love the movies.
I miss you guys ! How are you both doing ? It’s always comforting to come back and watch your reviews.
Darling Steve, thank you. Adding this charmer to my list. Please keep those essays coming as we all sit stranded at home. Much love
Been waiting ages for a new review , where you been? Excellent review Steve well worth the wait. ....
Excellent review! So informative as well as entertaining. I've never seen this film but hope to one day. JG should have been given more serious roles b/c she was a fine actress.
I hope you get a chance to see Judy in Judgement at Nuremberg. She should have been nominated in that one!
Fabulous review. I saw this movie so many years ago but it’s time to watch it again!
YES I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE. LOVE YOU, STEVE!
Hello Steve, I just watched this movie and it's pure magic, and the big city at night is so different and timeless.
Greets, Tom.
Dear Tom; So glad you liked it! Thanks for watching! Steve
This may be my favorite Judy movie of all
If it is, you've picked a good one! Stay SAFE! Thanks and My Very Best; Steve
Fantastic as always!
Great review! But curious why didn’t mention the part where they went through so many steps to get married legally, that’s the most interesting part to me, especially when she cried and said “it’s just so ugly.” That was really well performed.
Oh wow... I don't know this one AT ALL. I will have to look for it. LOVE YOU STEVE. Thanks. ❤️❤️
Another wonderful review, Thanks. Far too long between postings . I really look forward to them.
Great review, Steve. Judy never looked lovelier. A little reminiscent of another great movie, with Margaret Sullavan and Jimmy Stewart, The Shopworn Angel (also very much worth seeing).
Thanks for the reminder. I need to do a Margaret Sullavan movie. She was so unique and didn't make nearly enough films. Thanks for watching! Steve
Thank you !!!!
Thanks Guys, was a real treat✨
Love, love, love your reviews!
Judy had a wonderful potential for doing straight dramatic roles and comedy roles. Joe Mankiewicz went to bat for Judy at MGM. He argued with Louis B. Mayer that Judy should be given more adult roles and more range as an actress. He argued that MGM should allow Judy to "grow up". Unfortunately for Judy, her musicals were box office champions for MGM. MGM saw only dollar signs. Because of his involvement with Judy, Mankiewicz lost his career at MGM. He moved to 20th Century Fox and won many Oscars. Joe was a married man who had a wife in a sanitarium. Judy and her problems were just too much for him. Judy's problems were all-consuming. Joe knew Judy was on the verge of developing severe physical and emotional problems and warned Mayer that Judy needed help. Mayer and Ethel Gumm hit the ceiling and railed against him. Joe said, "Mr. Mayer this studio isn't big enough for both of us. One of us will have to go". Mayer nearly had a stroke. Judy married Minnelli on the rebound. Judy knew Minnelli was gay but pursued him anyway. Judy was warned that Vince was homosexual but she would not listen. Then she turned on Vincente like his being gay was a surprise! While they were married and after the birth of Liza, the studio pressured Minnelli to encourage Judy to sign a new contract with them. MGM saw only big profits ahead. At this time, Judy had been using amphetamines and barbiturates for more than a decade. Judy's confusion and drug addiction grew. Instead of glory and millions of dollars from Judy the Golden Goose; Judy began to cost MGM a fortune in lost days, budget overruns, and scrapped films. MGM offered to keep Judy on salary for one year if she entered the Menninger Clinic in Topeka Kansas for treatment. She refused. Judy received some very expensive treatment which did her absolutely no good. Little was known about drug addiction in those days. The treatment consisted of withdrawal and that was that.
Yup. Thanks for watching! Steve
2 yes later. One of My Girl's under rated films. She never had to sing again after this! Or should have gone into High Camp films both non musicals and comedies!
She would have been GREAT! in KADY IN THE DARK!
THANKS FOR THIS SPECIAL POSTING!
She could do it all!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Right!

Welcome Back Missed You
Stevie please give us more. We're home looking for good content. Please give us more. Thank you
I'm inspired to see based on this luminous review,
Wonderful movie review ... am looking forward to the next review. AJJ
Yes, a great little movie which deserves all the praise. Robert Walker and Judy Garland had such a great chemistry, probably because they were both themselves in a way lost and tormented souls. Perhaps also thanks to this occasional melancholy of the two the film has aged well, far beyond more bland or cheery World War II films.
Yes, I think the key is Minnelli, who was suc an underrated director when it came to his non- musical films. He put so much love and sensitivity into this. Thanks; Steve
Wow.. I never heard of this movie. Thanks!
I love this film and the sweet romance. Steve...random question. You always have these gorgeous dolls in the background...what are they and where do you get them?! Thanks for all the joy your reviews give me! ♡ (=
Thanks, so much! They are Gene Marshall Dolls designed by my dear friend Mel Odom.
Next time TCM shows this I’m going to check it out. Thanks for the review.
Oh! My GIRL! She should have done more! Dramas! High Camp Comedies! METRO DIDN'T REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY HAD IN HER! THE LADY GREAT: MISS GARLAND! 😀!
I saw this movie as a child. It stuck with me.
It's tender, innocent and very romantic. Thanks for watching! Steve
Lovely review toq

Wow Walker here...and then in Hitchcook's film...what an actor. Rip.
Love 💖 This!
Simply lovely, isn't it? Best; Steve
Love this movie!!!
Love you, Steve and Johnny! Steve, could you review some Betty Grable films? I’ve been introduced to her during this lockdown.
amazing content
judy is very good in this '' love it .
Steve how about ziegfeld girl w judy lana and hedy. Total glamour. Lanas descent on staircase w music throbbing is one for the ages!
I always reverse it so she falls back upstairs! THAT'S acting! Another on my '"to do" list!
****Penn Station**** I never saw the real thing. NYC in the 40's *sigh* (even fake Hollywood NYC). OK, except for the no air conditioning part. Subways with all the windows open!
Aww Steve you are so cute and adorable! I need to watch this one
Long time no c. I love this film.
There is a point in the movie that I thought Judy was going to sing, but she didn’t
I know exactly where you mean and I think Minnelli did that deliberately, to make you concentrate even more on what a wonderful actress she was.
The Harvey Girls went into production after The Clock. 😉
I absolutely love this movie judy is really great in this movie so too is Robert Walker Vincent did a great job as director 🌟
They were perfect together and Minnelli knew what to do with her. It's perfection! Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
Judy Garland is one of my favorite actresses, second only to Ms. Bette Davis.
I love this movie!
I don't blame you! LOL! Steve
Never thought I could love this movie more. Thanks for your insight. Now please review Hitchcock’s ROPE!!!!
Hello! Hello!
What’s John Fricke’s thoughts on this?

Indeed I am. Check with my CZcams site and you'll see the latest. A new one is due shortly.
The guy in the movie who plays the drunk was he on Bewiched playing a drunk thanks
I'm not sure. Keenan Wynn was on everything for years.
How are you guys doing out there? Hope you're all relatively well. VHKs to you all. (virtual x o x o !)
I thought Minnelli was gay- are you sure they fell madly in love?
