- In the high plateaus of central Vietnam live the Mnongs, a proud and free people, whose ability to capture wild elephants has become legendary throughout all of Southeast Asia. Macoun is the greatest of all Ivory Knights. He teaches three young men the ancestral knowledge of elephant capture. Upon returning to the village, the elephant is tamed for a few months and then released as a full-fledged member of the village community.

If it was not for the animals we would have never made it this far in life so don't discriminate against these people for they are part of the past.
i understand their culture but at the same time my heart bleeds for the little elephant. i thought i heard it calling for its mom :( reminds me of that documentary where there was a baby elephant that was dying in the desert but the mommy elephant stayed with it until it's last breath even though the herd was getting farther from them. It was very heart-wrenching which makes me think they feel sadness too, like human emotion. The momma elephant of that little one they hunted must've been devastated.

Omg just yesterday, I was thinking to myself: why Slice hasn’t released any about my country yet because I am sure there are lots and lots of areas, esp, Highlands and Northwest of my home have super great stories to tell. Now here we go. Highland Vietnam and Coastal Central are my fav places in the country. Thank you so so much. I am not from the same tribe, but indeed Mnong people are always rich in cultures and they are so-called elephant tamers.

Great documentary. I pity the elephants that works for these people. The man was hitting the elephant at rear over and over at the same spot. Creating immense pain and causing it to run faster. Humans are such cruel beings.

I struggle with this one because I love Elephants but, realistically, its no different to breaking and training wild horses. I'm wondering if they castrate the bulls.
I believe that there are spiritsin everything and I have to say that breaking a spirit can't be good. The elephants look so sad.

Horses are domestically animals so far. And in the case of wild horses humans don’t need to use bull hook or other cruel methods (phajaan) to make domestic. Cruelty used with elephants has no place in the world and no reasons to be in third millennium

...likely a very tough 22 years (since 1999-doc was made) for these elephant people; so sorry this beautiful human symbiosis has suffered such sharp decline; the documentary’s breath taking beauty is laced with my grief for a losing battle on our planet determined to crowd out these wonderful adapters; survival technology is such an organic marvel; I could not adapt and survive well as they have, impossible to go back and integrate their learned culture’s traditional culture...
Guilty, as spoiled in the luxuries of easy comforts ‘provided’ by support networks of complex technologies that I could never hand-crafted to reproduce their ancient ways, all in my own;
these productive souls and their elephants, show me how ridiculously disconnected I am from the sustainable pathways imposed by mother earth...
+ feel immensely apologetic to our ancestors, whom we have progressively betrayed in their dearest wish for us:
to be competent stewards surviving well and good off only the land, land accepted as is, and not exploited land ruined by scorched-earth nightmares of evolved civilization’s quest for absolute control’s deadly delusions...

The elephants have a scar on their hind region from the man in the back whipping constantly. See that? I have so much respect for and learn much from indigenous ways, I connect deeply with indigenous people of what is now the US, Canada and other northern territory’s. I am from Cork Ireland, a long lineage that enabled me to know of our tribal..clan way of life although this is something that I felt in my soul before I learned specifics of my family. Many of the women were healers going back to ancient Ireland. many in the family, my elders spoke of our ways and I recall being the word Druid said, my mother will speak of our ancestors using the term Druids. My other side is half Irish and half Scottish but fled Scotland because of religious persecution. I know the clan name of course and they settled north of Dublin in londonDerry or Derry. Many generations would be what one would call Irish gypsy’s..nomadic like life that would
Cycle with mother earths cycles. Catholicism came to Ireland and it is a beautiful thing how our people meshed our way with Catholicism. This is historically documented in paintings that are intact on the walls of very early churches and other tangible examples. Still to this day we are a people connected so to the land, to Mother Earth and to God. I say this bc I know the significance of maintaining one’s ways..but I cannot get past the fact that the animals are abused and are not to be kept and used. Whipping. This is not honoring the animal at all. Taking a calf from the mother causes devastation to both mom and calf. They cry out for eachother and both suffer for a very long time. There is no purpose in doing this either. No good reason to do this.

Elephants are a family unit so taking one away from its family is devastating too them, frankly tying a wild elephant to a tree to force it to take food from its captor or die is cruel, Vietnam is renowned for its cruelty to animals & so no surprise these people can continue to capture wild elephants and force them to do what they want,

32:43 min in.. I figured out what the thing by the elephant's tail is...its a hammer and they use it to beat the elephant until they break their EXTREMELY THICK SKIN. It MUST take a while. Let me recommend spiked hammers. Hey, at least they pour water on it after, for WE ALL know the healing and pain reducing properties of swamp water. These guys really respect their beasts of burden. From 1997, hunting elephants is forbidden in Vietnam. Now hunting this animal is only in memory. Deforestation is the main cause of depopulation of elephants in this country. Why is deforestation so serious there ? The answer is the bad management of authorities.
