  • It's day two of our PSS Not so Dripless Shaft Seal repair and all we need is 1/2 inch. 1/2 of bellows compression and our set screws to hold, and we will be good to go! If we get it fixed we will continue exploring the Chesapeake and if we don't... we will need to get hauled out in the Deltaville Boatyard.
    Thanks for watching!
    Cheers from the Loop,
    Jennifer and Elliot

    ABOUT US
    Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
    The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
    Thank you for following us along our journey!

    Good work! Hope that fixes the problem. Tip from my ocean travels in Alaska, if you get a chance, even going to a dock for a few hours, flush, rinse the engine area where the salt water spray hit. Rinse everything real good. Corrosion from salt water can create big problems down the road. I also vote Ollie for boat dog of the loop, hugs to Ollie and pat on back for both of you. Aloha!

    Adjusting the PSS seals use to be really difficult before I figured out a little trick. Took two of us and lots of time. Use a jack to put pressure on the doughnut. Most of the boats I work on have V drives so there is limited room to work with. Way easier with a normal shaft. Just use a block of wood to take up the space to the closest bulkhead. Just mark the shaft and compress. Seems like it always takes a little more than the manufacturer says it should. Might leak a small amount for about a hour but should settle in. The rubber bellows lose tension over time and motor mounts wear out. If you can pick up the new pro models. They come with a clamp to go on the reduction gear side of the doughnut as extra insurance. The jack out of my car is the perfect size. Just be careful and make sure not to scratch up the shaft. Don’t forget to clear any air out of around the seal if you don’t have water being fed to the seal from the motor. They get real hot without water around them.

    I realize you are long past this event. I will be curios if eventually had to replace the entire seal? I think part of the problem was the hose was getting hard. I think with a new bellows hose it would have been easier to compress. I just had an a pyy shaft seal installed I think next time I will use the last drop seal. Based on information gathered at Annapolis boat show 2023. Good luck have fun!

      Great question Peter, and that definitely could have been why it was hard to compress! No, we did not have to replace the bellows, it performed beautifully after this repair for the rest of our Loop. cheers.

    Wow you were anchored right in my home port of Jackson Creek in Deltaville! I have a 34' MT DC as well and it is normally at my pier right beside the public pier on the left going out. Look at replacing the PSS seal with a Lasdrop brand one. We have had packing type shaft seals, PSS type, packing types modified by inserting lip seals but have now hone to the Lasdrop. The seals can be replaced in the water without splitting couplings and are cheaper as well. Just a thought, if you are happy with the PSS then stick with it.

    If the shaft seal starts leaking again, you may need new motor mounts. The prop pushes the shaft and engine forward, harder with more RPMs. If there is too much give in the motor mounts it will shift forward enough to open up the shaft seal mating faces.

    • @fredbrillo1849
      @fredbrillo1849 Pƙed 2 lety

      I concur. The shaft leaks at higher rpm...the engine is moving on the mounts.

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  Pƙed 2 lety

      Fortunately we have had no more leaks in about 1500 miles running the gamut of RPM! Not saying that this for sure isn't an issue but it is a good sign 😁 Thank you for sharing the information, I will take a deeper look

    Thank you for yet another very informative video! I'm keen on the DIY mentality you both have, which will at times be essential when you're living off the grid of marina's and boat yards as you are. Have you found yourself having all the necessary tools on board or have you had to wing it from time to time? You can't help but notice all the 'stuff' you have on board. How would you describe the level of storage space (cold and dry) you have on your boat and what would you do differently or look for in your next boat in terms of stowage?

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Thanks Earl! We have slowly but surely built out a large repertoire of various tools, there are some I use more than others and quite a few yet that I wish I had. There is a good amount of storage on this boat, I'd say it is adequate. As far as a future boat, there are a lot of things we would value more than storage space. We have a few tips like using fabric bags for my tools such that they can be pilled into a locker and also using the same brand of wireless tools so batteries and cords are minimized, etc. etc. There's a saying that stuff will fill up the space you allow it, so any size boat's storage will be fine, you'll automatically tailor your use for it 😁 Technically we were traveling full time in 2 suitcases + 2 backpacks so it was an upgrade in storage for us 😁 Cheers!

    I have a random question, how do you handle your garbage. I was watching a large yacht tour and it had a separate refrigerator just for trash. Maybe this is one for another time???

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  Pƙed 2 lety

      We keep simply bag it and keep it in different locations depending on where we are / how long we need to keep it. Just recently we combined it all into a black garbage back and kept it on the opposite deck so it wasn't visible to our neighbors. Sometimes we keep in the lazarette near our stern. The trick is to really minimize it in the first place 😁
