Forbidden Pizza: Kiwi Experiment Gone Wrong

  • Venturing into the realm of unconventional pizza toppings, I decided to explore the curious suggestion of kiwi on pizza. Having previously experimented with pineapple and banana toppings, I figured, 'How bad could kiwi on pizza really be?'
My curiosity was piqued when I learned about the international phenomenon of kiwi pizza, which gained traction on social media circa early 2020. Originating from a Swedish individual's innovative twist on a Hawaiian pizza, this unconventional creation sparked both intrigue and skepticism.
Despite my initial reservations, I embarked on the journey to create my own version of kiwi pizza, following the template of a classic Hawaiian pizza but replacing pineapple with slices of kiwi. Topped with tomato sauce, cheese, smoked ham, and a sprinkle of dried oregano, the pizza was baked to perfection in my home oven.
However, the taste test yielded disappointing results. The sweet and sour flavor of the kiwi clashed with the savory elements, resulting in a combination that was less than palatable to my palate. In a last-ditch effort to salvage the pizzas, I resorted to dousing them in sriracha sauce, but alas, it was not enough to mask the overpowering taste of the kiwi.
Ultimately, I had to remove the kiwi slices to salvage the pizzas, a decision driven by my aversion to food waste. While I acknowledge that taste preferences vary, this flavor combination simply did not resonate with me. However, I'm sure there are adventurous eaters out there who may appreciate this unconventional twist on pizza toppings, but for me, it's a pass.

LOL, had to come from a Swede! 😉 Not only pineapple and banana, as before, but kiwi??? Well, it may work, but I would for sure prefer a not too ripe green kiwi which is fresher in taste than the yellow (sweeter). The acidity and sweetness in the pineapple is one of the things that makes it work so well, which is why I think the green kiwi would be the best. Not sure I wan’t to try this though… May as well stick to the pineapple which I love… PS! Did try a pizza with pineapple and banana (and ham) at an Italian restaurant in Lanzarote once and it actually was good. I also tried it on our traditional Norwegian pan pizza once and that was good too, but I never made it again. It’s simply better with only pineapple or a drizzle of a balsamic reduction (or homemade balsamic syrup) for that sweet/acidic yummyness on a pizza - those two simply works (not at the same time). Thanks for a great video! :)

      I mean - I had to try it :)
But no - this one did not work at all... I tried it since I was curious, but never again.
