The way Antonio Banderas reacts in all his movies is so naturally comedic and enjoyable to watch. I was a freshman in college, under a lot of stress when a bunch of friends decided to go to the movies. I had never heard of this movie before (no TV, no story) and I thoroughly enjoyed this in the theater. I was amazed it did so poorly, it's a great story that doesn't try too hard.
I envy you. It's sort of a shame most of us probably watched it on TVs. Knowing how cool it is now, the theater would have been the ideal place to see it first.

That's one of the reasons we know at least something about day to day lifestyle of Vikings. He obviously made the story more sellable by putting in dragons and other monsters, but other than that, it should have transpired. Also the Wendals were a Slavic tribe, that really didn't like Vikings and they were really tribal. Vikings were afraid of them and made them supernatural in their stories.

Michael Crichton is a very underrated author. The number of excellent books he wrote...the number of excellent movies adapted from them... Also, this movie is 20 years old, and I STILL can't keep up with the number of warrior being called. When he says "eight" I'm still at seven... I'm always missing one !

Omar Sharif temporarily quit acting because he was so ashamed of this movie. Yeah guess what Omar? I don't care what a 'great' you are, this movie is good. I can't stand actors who become sheep and disown a movie because it was received poorly by critics. As for the others, I recommend everyone watch the recent documentary about this movie which has interviews with most of the cast reflecting on how troubled the development was. Very interesting. Apparently the initial version was vastly different, requiring extensive reshoots. I would pay good money to find a copy of the 'other' film before it was reshot. Because I love this film so much and would really like to see an alternate version.
Too right mate. I get the feeling actors get on the hype train promoting the movie, but then it doesn't do well and suddenly they disown it. Disappointing. Glad to say that's not the case with the others. Banderas and Kulich expressed their love for the film in the recent documentary about it.
Great scene. This is how you put together an adventuring party :) I also love how Ahmed laughs with Herger even though he doesn't understand his joke when he volunteers :)
Everyone's comments on how awesome this movie is. It's because it really sticks to the true aspects- feel- of Northern Europe (I feel at least). It speaks to the soul of the essence it wishes to display.

I wish there was more character devlopement in this movie. That's honestly what was missing. You didn't even get to see all 13 warriors in that scene and you hardly see any of them die. They just disappear throughout the movie :(
It's a plot tool. By not showing everything that happens, you're left to imagine it yourself. It creates suspense and draws the audience in. Modern movies are mostly all eye candy. People go "Wow, great!" and then can't remember what happened 10 minutes later because they're not invested. Better movies tend to have at least some suspense left to viewers imagination drawing people into the story.
@@jamesmyszka4930 maybe you're right, but some character literally don't have a single line, like Ragnar, the tall guy who is always laughing, he just die without a single line and die like a common extra, the warrios could've been 12 without him and nothing would've changed, and the character development is inexistent, most of the warriors are nameless and you, the spectator need to find theyr names by searching on Wikipedia, that is a bullshit website so some times even the actors and the characters are wrong (if you look, Rethel have the wrong actor on Wikipedia) so at least theyr names, is the bare minimum, not even Herger who is a cooprotagonist in the whole movie get called by his name
they are speaking a mix between the 4 Scandinavian languages Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic, i am Swedish and i understand about 90% of this scene
One of the greatest movies of this genre: mysterious, captivating,realistic. It immerses you in a fascinating atmosphere of an epic tale. The movie gives a genuine feel of 1000 A.D. All this combined with a great soundtrack. Imagine the effect it had on me when I saw it the first time in 2002, at 8 years old. Just epic.
Recently rewatched this movie, took me a second to realize that Blondie was able to speak greek because he or a close relative was probably in the Varangian Guard in the Byzantine military.

Well, if you think about it, the Varangian Army was THE MOST ELITE ARMY IN THE WORLD AT THE TIME. Think about this: take a Nordic Viking into the most powerful Civilization in the world at the time, the Byzantine Empire. Teach them to "draw" both Greek and Latin. Give them the knowledge of the most advanced military education of the time. And most important, let them forge their own heavier weapons with the best steel available anywhere in the world at the time. The Varangians WERE the most advanced army in the known world at the time!!!

The byzantines were far from the most powerful in this time period. they werent even among the best. that was true 400 years ago. the most powerful civilasation at the time was either the Abbasids or The Tang dynasty in china. Also you seem to have an exagerrated view of the nords. the reason they were devastating was because their boats were very fast and they could attack unprotected areas very swiftly before armies were mustered against them. their physical prowess wasnt that important a factor in battles. the early romans have been kicking the germanics and celts aound for ages despite the big difference in physicality. Dont get me wrong, it was difinitely a strong unit, but nowhere near what you're making it out to be. if they were the byzantines would have reconquered their lost territory and would have stood a chance against the Real Elites of the time which were the central asian Horse archers that took control of the abbasids and pushed the byzantines out of anatolia.
I love how even if you don't understand the language, you get an idea if each man's personality with their acceptance...enthusiastic, stoic, pragmatic, boastful, fearful. You can even guess each man's reason for going...stoic leader, born warriors, looking for fame/glory, duty bound, quiet acceptance of a job or mission, fearful but honor bound, etc. Arguably, with exception made to those who know their language, it works well, maybe better if you don't, and gage their reactions

In scandinavia we used to speak what is now close to icelandic. A mixture between the languages we still speak. Meaning Swedish, Danish and Norwegian mixed with icelandic. What you call gibberish seems close to icelandic.
One thing I think is interesting about this is how they have that red-haired kid bringing the message and there was a kid like that in the early '80s Conan movie. The one who hit Conan with a whip on the hands when he was a kid pushing the Wheel of Pain. Considering how similar the two movies are.

back in the day, the Norse speech sounded like gibberish to me... now, 20 years later, I can clearly hear German, Dutch and English mixed all in there. even picked up a few words from the Latin part. when you get something done RIGHT, like this movie, and many others, people learn things.... all sorts of things.... .....and then, you have the crappy ones, which seem to get all the attention.
My deepest respects to whatever warrior who shagged this oracle back in the day. May your seamen multiply and grow strong and may they sail the high seas for a thousand years.

I realize that this movie received very negative reviews but I enjoy re-watching it multiple times. I find it well paced and very enjoyable.
That's actually my favourite scene in the movie, specially with the epic sound in the background slowly starting to appear.
Everytime i watch this scene i end up standing on the table holding a broom as if it was a sword.

Nice mix of bravado, solemnity, humour and what seems like the realisation from number 12 that this little adventure might cost him his life.
I like how Ibn looks at Herger in 1:47 they were natural friends

back in the day, the Norse speech sounded like gibberish to me... now, 20 years later, I can clearly hear German, Dutch and English mixed all in there.
even picked up a few words from the Latin part.
when you get something done RIGHT, like this movie, and many others, people learn things.... all sorts of things....
