Thoughts from a mental health counselor: I a million percent support the idea of seeing a black therapist if you can find one. No matter how hard we ⚪therapists try to sympathize/ empathize and keep our biases in check (aware or unaware) we just can't do the same job. Finding the right fit is sooooo critical. Therapy absolutely needs to be accessible. The reason it is so expensive is primarily because of insurance companies refusing to cover treatment. We totally agree with you! I've literally never met a therapist who's in it for the money because that's just not a thing. We make pennies.

Yeah, luckily I'm seeing that more non-black therapists online are talking about how the "community" aspect is missing from a lot of modern therapy. Glad it's coming in to the discussion.

The reason therapy is so expensive also has to do with the degree you need to be a therapist... lol

One of the best decisions I made was to start seeing a Black woman therapist who is in my age group. I also have a Black woman life coach. I am glad you made that decision as well. ❤
I've been suuuuper lucky with my therapists. It's not everyone's experience. I'm a psych student, myself, and sometimes I see how class mates act, think and feel and I'm like ... You should NOT give anyone therapy.
This is one of many reasons why it needs to be affordable. Looking for the right therapist can get very, very expensive.
Yes do a video on your therapy sessions and the benefits! Would love to hear about how you cope with your ADHD since I have a young daughter with it! Glad you are being transparent with us! And of course the makeup and teeth are fire!

I love that you have found a black woman to be your therapist. It is so important that we have therapist/counselors/mental health professionals that look like us as we are able to relate to each other much better than anyone else can. Thank you for sharing. As a mental health professional I deeply appreciate what you shared. Not only is cost a major barrier to accessing quality healthcare, the limited cultural competency and process of explaining your struggle is yet another challenge. I'm glad you found someone you can connect with. May we one day we have a free system with well trained providers and equitable access for all !!

Dang when she mentioned her ADHD I felt so heard. It's only my first semester and I've been heavily considering dropping out of college cuz my ADHD is so debilitating in so many damn ways :(
Honey I feel youuuuu! I almost cried today at the thought of constant forum posts and zooms. My grades suffer when I'm not in a class in person. I'm literally only taking one course cause I'm worried. Make sure to ask for accommodations if you need them!!!
Stay in!! I’m a senior in college now, and I really struggled with doubt for a while and some crazy mental health issues, but you’ll get a hang of it and figure out what works for you. This zoom university thing will not be going on forever. Take advantage of getting a higher education because it’s a huge privilege in this world, and you will not regret it when you’re finished. YOU CAN DO IT and don’t let your ADHD define or control you; you’re more than ADHD and you can doooo it! :)
Stick with it! I'm super adhd and I can say zoom university is the worst but if you can get through it being in person helps so much! Also check if your school has some sort of student accessibility services because that can be a life saver.
Some colleges allow for a mental health semester off! Could that be a viable option for you?
The same for me and my autism. I’m Struggling so much with third year at uni and doing a dissertation online. I’ve struggled to adapt but it’s making it so much harder all being online

I had been in therapy for yeeeaaars before eventually having a black woman as my therapist AND a different one as my psychiatrist and it was life changing. I never realized how important it was before I had that experience

I had a black therapist and she wasn’t helpful at all. I opened up with her about my issues with my dad and how he’s a narcissist and her advice to me was to “talk it out with him” as if I hadn’t done that already 🤦🏽♀️ speaking from my experience from someone who’s been going to therapy since they were 13, I had to find someone who wasn’t biased. A LOT of female therapists sympathized with my father for some reason. I guess it depends on the person.

Montreal, Qc, my city, as of yesterday was put back on the red-zone list in order to keep school and services operational. This most recent ban is on recreational visits to homes, museums, bars, etc...
Yes! please talk about your therapy journey. I’ve been considering going to therapy for a while but the stigma in the black community kind of turns me away from it.

In terms of couples therapy, the main search criteria for us was a black christian couple. Anything other than that was a non-starter. Then we had to look into their credentials, patients reviews and ratings if available. Finally we'd set up a "trial" session. Also, Jackie did re-stock!!!!

I really hope you are able to get your ADHD under control soon. I got diagnosed as an adult last year and getting on meds has been GAME CHANGING. Honestly so much of my depression/anxiety/self-esteem issues stem from my ADHD and dealing with that first helped everything else be a little less of a problem.

It was so, so wonderful and illuminating to hear you talk about therapy and what it means to you to have a therapist that can relate to your life experience. I’m in school to become a marriage and family therapist and something we talk A LOT about in my program is how to become culturally competent therapists to people whose backgrounds are different than our own.
