Wonderful breakdown of this song. IMO, John Taylor is one of the more underrated bassists from that era, but man, can he play funk. It's not my particular style, but I respect the talent and ability it takes to play those syncopated lines.

Duran Duran didn't perform in 1985 other than the one Live Aid gig.
So...now that you've been exposed you owe us some answers pal. How long have you been among us? Who else's lives have you ruined with your deceptions? Who sent you? How do you sleep at night knowing that you've told so many tall tales that the real you doesn't even exist?
It's probably too late to have a good life for yourself, but the least you could do is apologize to all those who's lives you have obliterated with your double-dealing ways.

When I was a beginner I said: "If I can someday learn how to play Rio... I'll be a real bass player."
I was so happy when that day came and eventually got into a band where I was both the bassist & lead singer. Performing both John & Simon's parts was difficult, but so very rewarding.
To this day, I still perform Rio before a show as a warm-up for my fingers and voice.

This series of videos is wonderful. I am a guitar player who thought he could buy a bass and be really good at it. As it turns out, bass is a whole different set of knowledge and technique.
These videos have helped me understand how the instrument is used so I can write my own bass lines that do more than fill a sonic spectrum.

Like John Taylor i am self taught & it was actually John Taylor that got me hooked on playing the bass guitar & as a Duran Duran Fanfirst I had access to all his bass lines up until I first picked up the electric bass guitar in the mid 1990s ,so I had quite a lot of catching up to do but since I knew his bass lineslike the back of my head & I could hear each one playing inside my head , this gave me a better chance at learning his bass lines a lot quicker than if I just heard each song for the first time , & for those that might be holding off on learning the bass line to " Rio " I say don't be pit off by this songs bass line as its a lot easier than it looks as John Taylor has a way of playing bass lines that seem more busy than they are & just jump into learning that " Rio " bass line as I can guarantee you once it all starts to fall into place , you won't want to stop learning it & playing it...
" All The Best One & All "
    .....
In fact you could almost say he was my teacher , as inbetween learning other bass covers from innumerable amount of solo acts & bands , I predominantly sat from morning til night , when I wasn't working , until I learned every one of his basslines that took my fancy first...
Since I only picked up the bass guitar in 1995 I had quite a few of Duran Duran Albums & I had no issue with going from 1 song on one album to another on another album , as at times some of his playing was hidden behind ghost note & the yse of staccato within his player but you'll find that John used Double Octave Chromatic Lick a hell of a lot more than you've stated in this video & to me it wouldn't be a John Taylor bass line unless he used & played a single or Double Octave Chromatitic Lick as those were his calling cards & loved to play them & they very prominate in the bands first 3 albums but he still from time to time go back to his calling card root & octave playing & allow its in the single " Rio " he really pushes that bass line along with various familiar riffs that took up that whole bass line...
You are absolutely correct in that the bass line for the Single " Rio " & Patrick Nagel's cover art painting for the full vinyl album were both voted the 2 most iconic references from 1980 to 1990 & I've lost track how many times I've seen the " Rio " Album being within , usually , the protagonists collection of viny albums along with Pink Floyd & Bob Marley to name only a few...
I can't remember the most recent movie that showed the " Rio " lbum within the protagonists collection but I definitely remember seeing it in the Tom Cruise Movie " Oblivion "
You'll find it , Spoiler Alert , in the little area that has set up his own little piece of land that he escapes to when he tires of doing his job within that movie... That place on Earth that he build & sets up himself along with the music reflects to him a feeling of Home , yet he is at that point not sure why...
This is not a spoiler as it states this quite early with that movies story that he & his partner are given Mind Swipes which are supposed to wipe his memory of everything up to that point yet he still has dreams & visions of a life he knows he couldn't have but the rest of the movie makes it easy to understand why this is!..
As , almost invited , vouyers to this little piece of Eden that he's built also takes him back to a time & place he's never been too , yet he keeps dreaming & seeing events unfold in a way he doesnt understand & though its not stated by his character as we're aloud as viewers to figure this easy part of why he does this but as a movie it was ok...
As I said you'd be surprise of how many movies that have the " Rio " album cover in within any particular movie when someone wants to listen tothe way music was recorded on & to hear at its best on a proper record player or turntable & a very good built up stacked Hi Fi that has all the separate units stacked on top of each other & once you've heard music played on a proper Sound System with a great Turn Talble you'll never go back to Smart Phones/Ipods & all the other ways of getting access to music but they aren't built to deliver music as a proper built from the ground up & your own specific individual units put together to create music properly , you'll never go back to today's ways of playing music...

Hello. So, you've learned all of John Taylor's basslines eh? Which one, in your opinion, do you think is the hardest? To me, it sounds like Last Chance on the Stairway is probably no walk in the park. I'd say New Religion is one of his coolest lines.

All of John Taylors bass line have a hint of " it'll be difficult to pick out certain notes "
      Why!
Bass players are unintentionally sneaky & they may play 1 part one way & the 2nd has a 1 step up or down note put into what was mostly a predominantly continous bass lines...
Listen ti guys like Guy Pratt & many others & they'll repeat ad nauseam & to the point they'd be better off using a computer but bass players bring that extra element of feeling within their bass lines & will repeat the main bass riff but will add certain hammer on or hammer of parts/along with slide notes up & down...
I'd have to go back to the iconic album & the painting & pick the bass line for " Rio " as John sneakly changes parts within that bass line also & yes yiu could get away with playing that Live but you'd know inside that you haven't learned that bass line to 100% & a few parts drop you down to knowing 85 to 90%
By the way what's with the attitude when you sent that comment 5+hours ago!
You insinuate by what you type in , in a way as IF your calling me out & that I'm sort of a liar...
I spent my who'll youth & a huge part of my adult life learning each song ftom John Taylor & on certain tracks he's not even playing bass as Nick recorded it with software he had , as John was in rehab at that time...
I are/,drunk & slept to 3 of my favourite bands & their bassists & that was Duran Duran/Level 42 & Japan & as much as John is an amazing bass player he is , respectfully , no even in the same ballpark as Mick Karn from the band Japan & his collaborative works he did post Japan splitting up...
Now IF I said is learned all of Mick Karns Bass Lines on Fretless then Yes I'd be lying , as he had the most unusual technique & style for plsying on a fretless bass guitar that I've never heard back 4 plus decades ago & even now I only know about 55 to 60% of his bass lines & I've even seen quite a few bass demos of other bassists on CZcams who try one of his bass covers & it sounds , to others , that the bassist has nailed it when he hasn't as I can hear & see where he's playing a particular part wrong & even now I'd be hard pressed to learn every Mick Karn bass line because of his fearless attitude of play the fretless , which in itself is no easy task but listen to his Live performances & listen out for what he's plating & yes as with every song there's the constant playing of same riffs in the verb/the chorus & middle 8 but even then Mick throws curves balls & you end up scratching you head as to what he played byt with ongoing age comes the patience of not rushing or switching myself off & IF It takes 1 year to learn one bass line of Micks correctly then so be it , as I'm my worst critic & I know myself when I'm not playing a section within a song that's just about there but I can't figure out what he doing...
No , I'm not saying Mick is better than John & it's 2 completely different approaches as to how both approach playing the bass guitar plus John played fretless on a rare few songs , were as Mick played & alway played the fretless bass guitar , along with wind instruments like the Saxophone & traditional Chinese Dida or Suona..
In light of this still ongoing coronavirus and it's variants stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world...
