- Today I'm looking at DuckTales! It's got an interesting history, from the creation of the Scrooge McDuck character, to a partnership between Disney and Capcom, similarities to Mega Man and changes made by Disney producers. Here's some history of the game along with my thoughts on how it plays.

Great history on the game! Thank you for including my story as the producer!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm so happy you liked it.
Hi it is a honor to hear about you legends in this video. You guys are legends for producing this game. As a kid i was a fan of ducktales and Capcom & there games. My family played for hours.
@@fidelsolis6070 thank you for sharing this. I truly appreciate it.
@@meandarlene1 your welcome. If u guys go to the comic con or events like that let me know so we can see you guys in person. Hace a good one.
I have so many fond memories of this game from my childhood, thanks so much for your hard work in producing it!
I just realized you could totally pull off a Magica De Spell, cosplay.
hahaha, great observation!
The duck bill would present problems😁
Must say that the similarities on the hair and clothes are incredible!!
Destructo Disk 🙃
Atleast a human version of it is very similar
Capcom made some of the best licensed games back in the day.
Ducktales, Chip & Dale, Aladdin...all childhood favorites of mine.
MetalSmasherGaming same here they also my a ms dos version of chip n dale rescue rangers still have the game box of it😊
Just like Konami
Thanks for including scans of the manual! Much appreciated
Going through the manuals is one of my favorite parts of doing reviews.
I love the back story to these things. There are tons of reviews, but so few people delve into the history and production. This was great!
Ain't that the truth!! She nailed it!
I miss the intro "Hi, I'm Pam, and I'm here to talk about retro video games". It was the equivalent of the 'Official Nintendo Seal of Quality' for your channel.
I’m so glad that you gave this one another chance and came to enjoy it! It truly is a classic, and I think it’s my favorite Capcom/Disney collaboration. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you for the "Ah-woo-hoo!"
It just isn't right to skip it.
Yeah that caught me completely off guard. I loved it
I can't help it. I've been doing it for weeks as I worked on this video.
Cannot be Tamed 🤗enjoyed this video
😈
Such a great time to be a kid. watching the cartoons after school then if I was lucky get to rent the games on Fridays.
Cool man us too as kids and teenagers. Those are the good old days. We just had it a bit tougher if you were living in a bad neighborhood. You had to be very Alert and prey you don't your money robbed or your Friday game you just rent or buy.
Always nice to see Carl Barks getting his due. For a long time, fans only knew him as the "Good Duck Artist" because comics of the day often didn't credit anybody involved in creating them.
One of my top 5 favorite NES games of all time. I really love this game along with Super Mario Bros 3 and Batman.
I enjoyed your preview of this episode at RetroWorld Expo. I was the one who actually won your prize. Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome. Thanks for coming to my panel.
Perfect timing! I just recently discovered that my local library has Carl Barks' Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics! This review gives me an excuse to revisit the game now! Thanks for the video!
That was the most thorough review I've seen of this game with a lot of stuff I wasn't aware of with the prototype version, very well done.
I was a fan of the Megaman games and never got around to playing this but I can definitely see a lot of similarities in the gameplay and would have enjoyed it. My favorite of the the Disney-Capcom games is Rescue Rangers, that is a really great game and it was especially fun in co-op.
This is more of a general observation, but I wanted to say that I really like your review style. For a 15 minute video, this flew by without feeling rushed or repetitive.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
@@Cannotbetamed1 Definitely. You're one of my favorite gaming channels these days
This was such a well thought out and thorough review, I appreciated it a lot.
When I was a child I played this game, and I was a huge fan of the Duck Tales animation. I never owned the game, or beat it, but appreciated it for what it was when I hired it from the video store (a relic of the past!) I particularly thought that the pogo function was a nice differentiation from other titles in the same field.
Thanks for another great review, as always. :)
Even the manual says "We have no confidence in this pogo mechanic."
My father bought this game for me and my sister at the flea market along with guerilla war for the nes. It was one of my happiest child hood memories that I now can relive them on my PC emulators.
Holy crap, you went all out here with the history and development. Well done! I've had this one since I was very, very young, and I always loved it. I'm pretty sure this is almost everyone's favorite Capcom developed Disney game, although some would probably pick either Rescue Rangers or Aladdin instead.
I really wish Capcom would return to making Disney games, as they did such a fantastic job with them. Every Disney title they did after 1995 has not been anything new and original. There were 3 exceptions, but they were nothing major. Magical Tetris was just another version of Tetris with Disney characters thrown in, and although the 2 Gamecube games were original and very well done, they were clearly meant only for young children. It's crazy how much most of these kids games have been dumbed down since the NES, SNES, and even N64 days.
Great video! Thanks for bringing additional insight and analysis to a game that has so much coverage, keeping it fresh! Keep it up.
I beat this game too many times as a kid, and loved finding all of the hidden treasures. I also loved the bouncing mechanic of course.
Thank you for the review in great detail, including an in-depth explanation of the game's core story! Since I played this game (and many other NES) as a little kid; finally - after decades, I now fully understand what the heck I was playing back then LOL...
This was the first game I ever beat as a kid growing up. Amazing soundtrack. Great video! It was really cool to learn about the Megaman connections. Glad you gave it a second chance. At first I had a lot of trouble using the pogo in the remaster. I spent so many hours perfecting my technique with the original version, it just never felt right :(
Enjoying the bits of history you've added to the reviews.
Damn. Very thorough research and great presentation, hats off to you!
1989.... man I was like 5 yrs old. Darkwing Duck and Ducktales were a few NES games I remember from that era.
Love your channel and the content you produce thanks for it all
Played through this one recently!
Scrooge's insatiable greed is always putting his family in dangerous situations
Awesome video Pam!
Thoroughly researched and well put together. I liked hearing about the developers and their history with the game.
Love your channel. Keep up the good work!
One of the best games on the system. Capcom was really hitting it out the park with their Disney games. Smooth controls and fun and addictive gameplay. A staple of my childhood. Nice video Pam and good work with the info on the backstory.
Thanks :)
Christmas of 1990 I asked my grandma for Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers, but she couldn't find it so she bought me DuckTales instead. I was upset at first but that changed fast as soon as I started playing it. Still one of my top favorite NES games ever.
So much new info in this video! One of your best yet to come. Here in Finland Scrooge was called "Roope Ankka". Ankka is the finnish word for duck.
Awesome review and vlog on this classic title. Great work as always!
Thank you
You did some good research there 👌 Loved it on the Gameboy back then 💜
This is a very well made video about one of my all time favourite games ! I'm gonna check your other videos for sure !
Thanks :)
I played a bit of the 2013 remaster on the PS3, and I wasn't sure if there was a specific order to play the levels. But thanks to this video, I now know there's really no order required. Just find the secrets for the best ending. Great retrospective. :)
It's funny that you would mention the similarity in cute facial expressions between Scrooge McDuck and Mega Man as Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy and therefore the father of anime (i.e. Mega Man), credited his art style as being inspired by Carl Barks' Scrooge McDuck.
That's a fun fact
I downloaded this game today to play on the emulator, I love this game. I'm Brazilian, I love your CZcams channel!
Really nice investigation, not just for the game itself, so development, making history, all its really interesting, thanks for all your effort and passion
Glad you enjoyed it
Great vid Pam! I like how you delve beyond just a review.
Thanks!
I was a big fan of Ducktales and the comics as a kid so of course, this game was always on my radar despite not having an NES at the time. Of course I did eventually get both the game and the console and it was one of my favorite games of all time.
Strangely, I never took much to Ducktales 2.
This is an incredibly well-researched video! It's the best review I've seen on this game, great job!
Thank you so much
Color me impressed. I thought I knew quite a bit about one of my favorite games from my childhood and it turns out there was a lot I didn't know! Thanks for filling in all the blanks!
You're welcome!
This review, is really high quality.
You put some serious work into this.
Subscribed.
Thanks!
DuckTales is such a high quality game! I remember playing DuckTales 2 as a kid and blown away by so much of what they did, whether it's the sprites, music, level design, etc. It felt like a grander adventure than your usual platformers at the time.
Wow, great video. So many interesting details
Thanks!
Nice review Pam :D
One of my favorite games from my childhood, I remember playing this for the first time in a modified NES to arcade machine, when you needed to deposit coins every time the game paused, years later I got it in the famiclone, finally I bought the remastered version some years ago, before it disappeared from virtual stores. Such great memories :)
"... and there are no continues." (freeze frame on the R.I.P. on the casket)
I only started playing Ducktales when I got the Disney Afternoon Collection, but ever since, I'll play it obsessively sometimes. I've gotten the over $10 million ending, and once or twice, I've even pulled off the elusive $0 ending.
Ah, Capcom at their finest. This was fantastic, Pam. I especially liked the history you included on Scrooge McDuck and the insight on the development of the game and the really interesting prototype. I love this game and it’s definitely my favorite Capcom Disney game on the NES. Again, this was wonderful. Keep them coming.
Thanks Duke! This was a fun one to make, I like when there's some history to dig into.
The develor/producer onfo was very much appreciated!
Capcom has always been my favorite developer. DuckTales definitely belongs on any best of NES list. Great video!
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing with us in the chat!! Hope you have a nice new year of life and prosper!!!
What I most love about this game, is the music! Absolutely love every song on each of the levels. Even today, as a full grown adult jeje.. I like to play this game on an emulator just to hear the songs!! Anyway, just discovered your channel!! Love it! Love your reviews!! 👍🏻cheers from México!!
Thanks! Welcome to the channel
The new TV animated serie of Ducktale is so cool to watch! I recommend it, it's fun to be with all those characters again. I read so many of their adventures as a kids, so many memories!
You did well covering the story behind this game.
Thanks!
Great, great vid. Well researched and very informative. Glad you gave Ducktales another chance and enjoyed it more the second time around.
I love all the Disney Capcom games but I guess Ducktales would be my favorite. I will admit I think Talespin is an underrated black sheep though. That game's a lot of fun, just different.
You killed it in this video with the historical background, from Uncle Scrooge comics to comparisons with the Mega Man engine. Bravo!
Thanks!
Beautiful...and the video too!😉
Entertaining and informative with your very nice voice narration!👍
Awesome work, Pam!
Thanks
Another quality production and review Pam 👍
Thanks!
Came searching for Duck Tales and found your video. I like your presentation style! Subscribed
DuckTales, Darkwing Duck and Chip n Dale were the best Disney/Capcom titles on NES. I wish they can remastered the last two games I mentioned. Ducktales borrowing the Mega Man element is just as amusing as Tiny Toons on NES borrowing one from SMB 3.
Great video and really informative! lol Donald Duck clubbing baby seals. I can totally see that!
Excellent video. The production value of your video is very well done. Good Job.
Thank you!
DuckTales was definitely my favorite, followed by the first Rescue Rangers. On the SNES, that Mickey Mouse game was fun as well.
I like Rescue Rangers too.
One of the best Nes platform games and the Moon level music is so iconic!
I remember playing Duck Tales on the Amiga. It was only much later that I got in on the NES. So much later in fact, that I don't even remember if the Amiga game was the same that got released on the NES.
Great video! Wang Film Productions was only one of the many international animation studios that contributed to the original DuckTales show. Probably the most prominent of them all was Japan based Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS Entertainment), best known for several Lupin the 3rd projects, Akira, Little Nemo and several episodes of American shows throughout the 80’s and 90’s like The Real Ghostbusters, New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Tiny Toon Adventures, Batman: the Animated Series and the original Animaniacs among many others. They animated most of the first 65 episode season while Wang Film mostly worked on the last two seasons.
You really did your research on this! Great job and very informative.
Thank you
excellent video pam, you are a genius at this. truly epic
Thanks :)
Awesome video!! Thank you!
so cool
Great video. Very engaging and informative
Thank you
One of my favorite things about Pam's reviews is her emphasis on playing music. That's core nostalgia for me !!
My favorite Disney-Capcom games are Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse and Aladdin, both from SNES
Your videos are amazing. Keep posting this retro vids
Thanks, I will :)
It's amazing how a game that had only 5 not too long levels has managed to keep its legendary status over so many decades. But DuckTales has.
It's my favourite Disney-Capcom game along with Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers.
This was a really great review. I especially loved the prototype stuff... it was very nice to see those side by side and to hear about the differences! I still need to play this one sometime myself.
Thanks! I love a good side-by-side comparison
Thanks again Pam for another well done video. You should do a live stream of you playing a game. Maybe.... Quakshots for the Sega Genesis.
Love this game. One of my first, on the NES. Being a huge Uncle Scrooge and Magica fan also helped. Very interesting, to see the differences, between the prototype and the final version. By the way, regarding Super Mario 3, let's not forget you can also kill the bosses by shooting fire balls or hammers at them. If you have the power ups needed.
Ahh, the memories. I have the After School Collection and the remastered version of this game myself. And it is just outstanding. I appreciated the historical aspect you brought to this video, and I'll award bonus points for being able to pronounce all the Japanese developers' names that you did. I imagine that took a little practice. Really good job here, Pam.
Yoshihiro took me a number of takes
Just found this channel and I'm loving it :)
Thanks!
This was the very first game I ever beat waaaay back when I was just 3 years old. Watching your video brought back some nice memories. Thank you for making this.

You're welcome
I played the NES game once, but the one I have is the Wii U remake... out of that, the other Disney NES games I Own are Mickey Mousecapade, Chip'n Dale Rescue Rangers, and Tales Spin... but the one I want to own is Darkwing Duck.
Darkwing Duck is good, but I find the bosses very challenging.
Great video! My favourite was Duck tales 2. Played that to death. It had more replay value as well because it had 2 endings. One for normal playthrough and another "true ending" for it if you got all the pieces of the treasure map! Look forward to your next video.
This is a game I wished I grew on. I didn’t play a lot of NES games in general. But I’ve been a huge fan of the Ducktales show. Scrooge McDuck is my favorite Disney character. I couldn’t wait for the remaster going in being aware how cherished the nes original is. I know some people complained the remaster being too cinematic, and being too nostalgia over the music being remade since it’s so held as the greatest piece of gaming music. But I appreciate it for what it aimed to do the way it expands the story, and being even more directly represented of the show. Awesome piece of history on this game too. Based on the remaster alone I had tremendous fun with this game. But I did get hands on the original game, and enjoyed it too. I wish the remaster would get a current gen port. And I wouldn’t mind more Disney Capcom remakes either. This game aside, I really enjoyed Goof Troop for SNES. Great review. I also really missed the era when Konami made amazing licensed WB games. Those were my jams.
I really liked the remaster, it brought the cartoon to life. I should play it again sometime.
GizmoDuck was called RoboDuck in the Japanese dub of DuckTales. Interestingly enough, that was also the original name that Tad Stones gave him when pitched to Disney in between seasons 1 & 2 of DuckTales in 1987.
Amazing content, so refreshing and well made
Thanks so much!
You're welcome, I wish you great days 🖤✨🎮
DuckTales was a great game on the NES but I never knew it was ported to the Game Boy. I like the fact you do your research on these videos
Aaa, your shelf! Tex Murphy!
Yay, another Tex Murphy fan :)
Great channel, glad youtube recommended it for me :)
I'm gonna have agree with the critics that said the fame was too short. I thought that as a kid, an hold true to that today.
Also, once you get the hang of the pogo jump, you find yourself doing it all the time for both fun and a sirt of defensive way to move around.
All in all, a classic NES gem. Cool vid.
It's not that much shorter than games like MegaMan in terms of length from start to finish, it's just easier so you get through it faster.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Mega Man did have the Dr Wily stages and boss rushes before the 2 fold final boss fights.
But youre right, Duck Tales was way easier to get through than any of the Mega Man games, even if you remove the Dr Wily stages. I still love Duck Tales though. It was fun, which ultimately is the most important factor of a game.
I had Ducktales and Rescue Rangers as a child.
Im a Rescue Ranger kinda guy, had the most fun with that one :)
I like that one too
Holy crap. You went IN. Going into the history, the relationship of Capcom and Disney and of course the game. Bravo girl! I could take a lesson or two from you. I learned so much...
Glad you liked it! I'm trying to add some more history to some of my videos.
You need to review Mickey Mousecapade next. That's when the Disney-Capcom era truly began!
I remember renting this game many times from a neighborhood rental store. this and rescue rangers were great fun.
Great review Pam!
This has always been one of my favorite games of all time. Everything about the game IMO is just awesome. The music, the level design and the graphics are all top notch IMO.
I can understand other people's frustrations with controlling the pogo stick but somehow I got accustomed with the pogo stick right away. I played the Game Boy version first when I was younger then I came across the NES version at FuncoLand some time after that. There's multiple endings to the game too, the typical game clearing ending, the special ending if you find all five of the treasures, and the 2 lost treasures and have more than $10 million, and the bad ending if you have $0. I've beaten it multiple times with the regular ending, but always try to go for the special ending to fully complete the game and give myself a little more challenge. The bad ending's hilarious with Scrooge weeping over his lost fortune even though he found the treasures. I recently just beat it with the special ending which was pretty cool.
What's even more cool about DuckTales is that it led to even more cool Capcom-Disney games like the Chip n Dale games, Darkwing Duck on NES, Aladdin on SNES, and the Magical Quest games. The Remastered one I haven't played in a long time so I beat the Wii U version pretty easily. Need to give that one another go soon.
When I played I got all the hidden treasures, but I don't think I had more than 10 million. The bad ending seems hard to get.
Ducktales is one of the best NES games ever released. The design and mechanics worked so well. Then when it comes to the soundtrack what can I say? Capcom is not a slouch when it comes to amazing soundtracks but to me this one they really knocked it put of the park. Moon especially is one people still know to this day as one of the best video game songs.
Capcom had a few great Disney titles with this, Chip & Dale’s Rescue Rangers and Aladdin for the SNES.
Oh this video takes me back. Now I need to find some Duck Tales eps.
Good stuff, Pam. Funny enough, I actually have less experience with the NES game, because none of my friends owned it, but they probably rented it once or twice. But I owned the Game Boy version as a kid, and loved it. I also loved the Remaster, when I bought it for Wii U. I don't remember where I read or heard it, but I vaguely remember something about the Mega Man engine that they tweaked for DuckTales was what they developed for Mega Man 2. Pretty obvious now, comparing the games, but as a kid, I didn't notice. I was just happy to play the game, since it was one of my favorite cartoons. I even remember watching the DuckTales movie where they introduced Gizmo Duck.
Gorgeous! And sweet game I remember this great game and soundtrack
That prototype music was later used as a Sewer theme in Chip and Dale game
