The MOD made it very clear a few years ago that they did not want a person to stay in the military for a full career, as that was far too expensive, especially with the pensions.....this immediately adversely effected recruitment of those people looking at enlisting at Sandhurst who often had a choice of a lucrative civilian career or a full career as an officer, who then understood that they would be turning down an excellent civilian career for only a short term of service as an officer.

In those days, which I am old enough to remember, we were all moving in the same direction, post-war, and it was men only who were called to serve. That can't be any more. We have equality in the eyes of the law, so women would have to serve too! Does that include men or women who can still only string a few sentences of English together? Or those with political alliances to many other countries, globally? So, government would be faced with asking white anglo-saxon men and women to go and fight for a huge proportion of the population who are relatively recent in-comers to this country, because they won't be suitable recruits!
