Neil deGrasse Tyson Describes the Limits of our Knowledge

  • How much can we really know? Journey back with us to a classic episode of StarTalk, where Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice wax philosophical as they answer questions some of the deepest questions in the universe.
How much smarter are aliens compared to us? Neil deGrasse Tyson dissects the intellectual and genetic differences between humans and chimps, extrapolating that to hypothetical alien species. Are our brightest scientific minds shadowed by alien toddlers? Are we living in the simulation created in an alien kid's basement?
Will A.I. decide humans aren't important? Neil ponders this question as he re-enacts a scene from his favorite movie, The Matrix.
Are we smart enough to even ask rudimentary questions about the universe? Neil reminds us that our human senses, honed for survival in the Serengeti, lose their sharpness as they contemplate infinity and extra dimensions.

Let's try anyway: what would be the possible applications (and the one you would prefer) if we could temper with the Higgs field, considering it is responsible for letting atoms applying their mass ? Applications on Earth and in Space. Tks 😊

I so enjoy StarTalk. I think of Earth as school. I am an 80 year old who still takes college classes online because it has become a habit and necessary for my work. I have wasted no time. As far as I am concerned my body is a vehicle the same as my car. Everything we know and experience on this Planet is created on, in, about or for this planet. I see the memory and information stored in the brain the same as Dark Matter. No one is quite sure what it is or how it works. We are not very intelligent creatures. We need this planet to sustain life, yet look what we have done to it. And we have already created something more intelligent than us, A.I.

Many species of animals have senses we can never possess. There are already life forms on Earth that can perceive magnetic waves, air densities, gravity, ultra-low-frequencies, hyper frequencies, have polarized vision......and who knows all of the things that insects can see or detect. We are just hitting the surface of our sensory powers, which ultimately are the 'creators' of our world.

    Dr Tyson:
I'm not sure if you've come across this already, but there's some truly fascinating research on chimpanzees and their cognitive abilities, specifically their memory skills. Scientists have found that chimps can outperform humans in certain memory tasks, like quickly remembering the order of numbers on a screen after they've disappeared. This isn't just a random talent; it offers a window into how different species have evolved distinct cognitive strengths. If you haven't seen it yet, there's a great demonstration of this in a video titled "Chimpanzee Memory Test" by the BBC on CZcams. It's a captivating look at their capabilities and might offer some fresh insights, even if you're already familiar with the topic. Keep looking up!

Wonderful 😊 Sometimes it just takes simple ideas and the right moment … I talk about this almost every day in my seminars on European unification and the legacy of Jean Monnet & Robert Schuman in 1950 (9th of May). In Europe we have built this idea into our institutions. But it will have to stand the test of time: like in the EP elections in June 2024. While there is actually a war again in Europe right now … many people seem to prefer to vote for politicians who promise them an “alternative” view of reality😮

I like to ponder the idea of vastly more intelligent beings by comparing our intelligence to animals which seem to do dumb things. Like when a cat gets its head stuck in a bag or container and then keeps reversing hoping they will back out of this darkness, or a leashed dog who keeps unknowingly shortening its leash by walking around in circles. At a mature human level, we can tell what is wrong at a glance. But there are many more concepts which the average person struggles to comprehend. So a superior being would laugh at us the same way we laugh at the dumb cat trying to back out of the bag on it's head

It should be noted that most highly intelligent animals have a way of "saving" or "storing" knowledge, to be passed along to the next individual and generation. We especially see this in Killer Whales and dolphins, as well as most primates. We also see it in predatory cats, as they teach their young what to hunt and how to hunt it (and when to hunt it).
The outstanding thing about humans is that we've managed to pass down information from 10's of thousands of years ago, up to today, where the storage and access of knowledge and information is as easily accessed as pressing a few buttons on your computer.
Perhaps, within the next 50 to 100 years, we will see more and more people emerging with that extra 1% of mind power and awareness. Some will argue that these 1% individuals have already been here, and may still be here now.
We call them Messiahs, or Avatars, Gurus or native "Mystics".

You can explain to a dog all day long that photons are emitted by gamma decay. The results will always be …………… It’s nothing in the dog that can understand that concept. I have seen with my own eyes how other humans can’t understand concepts. If I use visual aids, break the information down different ways, dumb it down as much as possible. I’ll see the same result of talking to a dog…………. Belonging to the same Homo sapiens and the average person just can’t wrap their heads around the information. I attempt to cleanup some of these videos online with Neil talking about a fourth dimensional tesseract. Every once in a while I get a reply thanking me for explaining it so that they can make sense out of it. I’m smart enough to know the others that watch the video and even read me breaking down, still don’t have the ability to understand the concept.
Added on to this comment just incase a person wants to know what the hell the tesseract actually is in those videos. Try to understand that information can be scaled up or scaled down. In the lowest form you would have a point representation of an object. If you scaled the object up a dimension, you would have two points that can be contacted by a line. If you scaled the information up again to a second dimension at this point, you could see all of the object from left to right and from up to down. Scale it to a third dimension ( which each dimension is just another 90 degree angle) Now you can see all the previous dimensions and now the object can come toward and away from you. Next is the 4th dimensional space. With just another 90 degree angle added. You would see all previous dimensions and now the new one. This new one allows you to see both the front and the back on the object at the same time. The reason the tesseract looks to be rotating in on itself is because it’s attempting to represent to you, that you can see inside of the object itself. Recap- fourth dimensional space has all of three dimensional space, plus the feature to see the front and back of objects and the ability to see inside them.

That will always unfortunately be apart of Humanity unless action is taken by ourselves to remove that. Genetic Editing? Selective Breeding? I cringe at both, but our Negatives have not left us as a culture. Humanity will merge with A.i, because we seek to better ourselves. We see our flaws and we wish them away. @@nycest14u2nvnot necessarily how that works, have you ever interacted with any of those infinite versions of yourself… those infinite numbers of yourself have had an infinite number of either negative or positive experiences or a combo of both… you really wanna think about yourself as immortal when an infinite number of those infinite versions of yourself that possibly exists that provides you with your “immortality” is a serial killer, a pedo, a sociopathic maniac that solely exists to torture others???? Is that how you wanna picture the multiversal reflections of yourself when you’re on your death bed slipping into the sweet, cold clutches of death?
Definitely not how I would wanna remember myself.

What about people like Anita Moorjani who have near death experiences and say there is a (non-physical) afterlife. So when we die our body dies but our inner self (soul) is energy and continues on.

Our best faculty is our memory as jaded as it can be. We can collect and store perceptions, data and story telling better than in the past, we trade them as currency, put high value on some and less value on others.
I can only try to be positive and somewhat romantic about what could be. I really appreciated Gene Roddenberry's imagined socialist Star Trek utopia
Sadly our future and present is more like an episode of 'Black Mirror'

Think about this. 1) What happens to the software when you destroy the hardware? What happens to intelligence and memory when a person dies? Do software and soul goes to heaven?
Think about this. 2) If we can’t communicate with fishes and ants here on earth, what make us think we can communicate with aliens if we come in contact with them?

It is curious that scientists cannot suggest mandatory accounting in the schools to influence how the economy works to affect the global condition.
