Everyone is talking about Chainsaw Man
And because it's current year and a MAPPA anime that means everyone is talking about CG. CG is short for CGI which is short for Computer Generated Imagery. If you've ever thought an anime looked like a cut scene from a ps2 game, that's CG. The bugbear of the anime community- no joke this stuff divides fandoms like Moses parting the red sea. And I promise to limit the references to CLANG as much as possible (BERSERK 2016). To talk about CG we gotta talk about MAPPA and to talk about MAPPA we gotta go back

In my opinion CGI looks better than 2D when used on objects

And they also use rotoscoping on CGI dummies
it looks like ass , on models , denji looks awful
Mappa's characters always look lifeless and/or awkward. CGI animation can become uncanny valley real quick
Bleach doesnt need to rely on 3d cgi. Im more of a chaimsaw guy but I wish mappa used the bleakness technique that was used in Bleach 100 years blood war masterfully used.
As an animator myself I think I'll always love hand-drawn animation, but I cannot deny the world of possibilities that CGI allows. I hope like with works like Arcane and Spiderverse, there's gonna be a shift towards more stylized CGI as well.
Why not deny cgi if ur an animator? Its going to put people out of job the way things are goin

MAPPA has actually been a forerunner for CG tech almost since their inception. It’s a good thing these studios are learning how to animate and composite 3D because as much as it can look jarring in some places now, it won’t once they master it. Not only does it lift some of the weight off the little guys, it’s also allowing for much more detailed and fluid scenes when done right. CG is the future and I think the faster people accept that, the faster animation studios can implement it and make it look amazing. It’s honestly the same story with when they first started using CG in movies 30 years ago, it looked rough, but eventually became the norm and an essential part of a lot of big productions.
And I'm sure the CG of Anime today will look comedically bad a decade or even 5 years from now. But that's a part of the process. Thanks for the comment :D
They still have a long way to go before they have good cgi like ufotable.

@@npcimknot958 exactly. I'm no professional artist or even accomplished, but I have talent for it and I've adapted an eye for artwork and can just spot cgi better than most random viewers it seems.
When aot s4 part 1 happened, a lot of people were dismissing complaints saying "you can't even tell its cgi, how can you complain about it?"
The problem with that argument is that THEY couldn't tell, and so they weren't understanding that the people complaining COULD tell.
I simply could not ignore the cgi. I just can't. It's there, I see it, I have issues with it because it takes me out of the moment because I can tell when a shot goes from hand drawn cgi in just a few frames.
So despite even chainsaw man's upgraded cgi when compared to aot, it still bugs me a little....okay a lot actually sometimes. With an action scene going so fast, the dimensions of a character changing so fast from 2D less than 30 fps, to 3D 60fps is just jarring.
And what's worse is that the anime has good 2D fight scene moments too, and those are soooo much better looking than the 3D ones that it only makes what could be considered good anime cgi, look like shit still in comparison.
It's not angering me like attack on titans cgi did, but it lessens my enjoyment of action scenes. My brain completely loses focus on the substance of the fight and just goes "that's cgi"
The only outstanding anime cgi I've seen in violet evergarden (looks like super high quality 2D animation) and to a lesser extent, fate series (very asthetically pleasing and allows for consistently good fight scenes).
Honestly AOT cg didn't look bad, it was aesthetically pleasing but the motion of the cg animation is not as fluid as you'd expect it to be. That's why it can look out of place. Chainsaw man however managed to create wonderfull looking cg animation aswell as recreating the fluidness and pacing that 2d works like OPM, HxH and Demon Slayer.
Btw great video, if you keep putting out videos in this quality you will soon find yourself getting more views and subscibers.
I wish I could expose everyone to the problems of medium blended animation, especially when the goal is to make one medium look like another. It's very difficult to make 3d look 2d or vice versa. Most of the point is just that Chainsaw man is doing it really well and it's worth acknowledging, if that makes sense. And lets hope so... I enjoy making these vids, because I'd be thinking this stuff anyway, but the more views a work gets the more it lets me know that there are people out there who at least are thinking similarly. Thank you for the comment
I honestly think it is the opposite. The animation is too fluid which makes it out of place.
2D tends to exaggerate movement with key frames. And 3D is just fluid movements.
Like there is no weight, or "impact", of movements.
@@MrDarkoiV exactly.
It looked bad. Just what i think
They specifically make it look less fluid so that it doesn't look jarring and out of place with the 2d animation by reducing the framerate.
When Maruyama founded MAPPA in 2011, he predicted that anime in the future will have more 3DCG. So what does he do? Bringing in directors like Yuichiro Hayashi to cultivate experience in directing 3DCG. Garo, Rage of Bahamut, Inuyashiki, and Dorohedoro were some of MAPPA's anime that used 3DCG and their improvement throughout the years has been admirable. The only way 3DCG can may be as good as 2D is if its used again, again, and again. Because thats how it can improve with directors and 3DCG animators learning from their experience.

The main problem with cg in some shows is the fact that it is used excessively and for everything
I remember when Pokémon first began doing this in the XY series. It was a BIG deal in Pokémon community to suddenly see these new dynamic battles. Sure we had good animated battles before but for them to make EVERY single random battle look amazing and not just the ones important to the story is just phenomenal. The animators were also very creative in how each Pokémon moved and fought in the 3D space in ways we the audience never would’ve thought of. No more just plastering the Pokémon on a colorful flat background when they attacked or got hit.
As much as I don't like the idea of it, a strike and union would be a good idea for the anime industry. Or maybe it takes studios paying animators a fair wage for their skills for other studios to follow suit.
Sadly, any increase in cost would not be beneficial too. Anime sells because it's cheap. Less manga would be adapted to anime, TV and streaming companies are less willing to buy rights for the show, and it would increase outsourcing to other countries. If you notice the credits, Vietnam has been outsourcing anime for quite a while and they'll only increase if cost of labor increase. What's below minimum wage in Japan is an above average wage somewhere else.
@@triadwarfare Damn you're right. Fuck corporate greed. It's what it always boils down to.
Funny enough in the chainsaw man manga when Denji was singing in the bath - he was singing about work uniouns, Anime adaptation cut this song
They do pay a fair wage to an actual animators. In-between and cleanup animators barely do anything and they are the ones who earn 300$\mo. Which is fair considering their low value input.
@@triadwarfare Like you know a single thing about anime industry. Worthless opinion.
After seeing the video I have to ask: WHY THE FUCK IS THAT THE TITLE?!
I am an artist and I have put a lot of time into researching the Asian animation industry, western animation, and the whole process of making an anime. When I saw that title I started profusely sweating and debating whether to click it or not.
*To those too lazy to read: he's not only correct, but it's also already being done and it has been done before chainsaw man.* I'll go into a niche anime: No Guns Life sometimes uses 3D backgrounds, most of which are of extremely high quality for some reason. They used unreal engine for the renders and for its time it looked amazing. At the time I wasn't that interested in animation, but even back then I couldn't help but pause and rewind to look at those few frames.
CG is good for fast shifts in perspective, as rotating 50 objects frame by frame in 2D is ridiculously time-consuming. However, it shouldn't be:
1. existing on the same layer as the 2D objects
2. used for the characters, unless it's an extremely fast, camera-changing, angle-changing nightmare shot or a short still.
3. low-quality Berserk 2016 ahh animation lookin' garbage 4. used when a character is doing a complex movement with the camera fixed in place or only slightly moving. Use rotoscoping instead, it looks better than CG and isn't as exhausting as animating it from scratch. (Which MAPPA did and I am proud of them.)
5. bunch more general rules
All CG anime is good, but only when CG good.
Good video!
This is such a great take on the topic
The sequence when denji and katana man are fighting on top of the train in episode 12 is a prime example of 3d being utilized to enhance the animation. You CANNOT convince me that even the most fluent of 2d animation would have looked better than what we got there. The way MAPPA has done the cgi in this series works BEAUTIFULLY for fast paced action. It allows them to animate complex character designs in a fluent and efficient way that looks and feels cinematic and borderline realistic, which is what they’re going for. The cgi falls short during scenes with minimal or slow movements. These are moments when a still but detailed 2d image with a mouth flapping up and down would probably be better than the 3d models, but the fast paced scenes with MAPPA’s cgi look completely different from anything I’ve ever seen, and it genuinely looks like it could become the future of animation. When utilized correctly, the 2d and 3d blend genuinely looked better than regular fully 2d animation, again, with the train too fight sequence being the best example of this.
My god I was watching this and I thought it was some popular channel because of the production quality and as the habit I have of looking at comments after I am done with video I noticed that it just has 991 views, good work man may the algorithm be with you

This is a really professional video. I agree with your takes, and I really like how this video is formatted. Can't believe you only have 1.4k subs
When he flipped the 2d and 3d and then did the bamboozle my mind melted.
6:19 This form of animation, using both 2D and 3D aspect ist Ufotable's goto technique. They've been using it ever since Fate/Zero. MAPPA in no way are the founders of this, they only managed to make this technique more mainstream due to Chainsaw Man's popularity. And when it comes to frames that don't have that orbital camera shown in the timestamp, MAPPA completely uses only 2D like here: 5:40 to 5:50 or 5:52 to 5:58
CG is used to display something that can't be drawn in 2D like Complex backgrounds, video FX, etc.., it is the main style of a studio like Orange or is used as an easy way to cut corners with a budget, uses less animation and time. The reason why people most of the time hate on 2D studios using CG is because they are used on humanoid figures which most of the time look very stiff in movement and don't express as much as a 2D drawing can. AOT for example in the first 3 seasons rarely used CG (for backgrounds). Then for the final season, the studio changes. Not only does the art style change but the Titans become CG. Compared to Wit Studios 2D Titans, the movements are way stiffer and don't express any real coalition. That's why people were very upset with the titans being CG. Meanwhile, Chainsaw Man makes it so that only few frames have 3D humanoid figures while most of it stays 2D. Your video feels like Chainsaw Man's CG will change how CG will be used while it's been like this for over decade already, thanks to Ufotable.
i see
I personally just want to see both a mixture of 2d and 3d, I think it works the best cus you keep the charm of 2d and at the same time you make the life of the animators even if just by a little bit easier with the 3d.

First we look at this with a gasp and a chocked expression. Then we look at Bleach and take a sigh of relief that this isn't the case and that peak animation will still exist.
Chainsaw man surprisingly alot of 2D that looks 3D or 3D that looks 2D. I can't fucking tell .
Attack on Titan was going to be a CGI show from the start but they went with compositing instead with 3dcgi backgrounds and 2d characters with heavy cooperation with freelancers like Arifumi Imai animated some of the best work of the show alongside other amazing WIT talent. While season 1 was rough around the edges especially without the blu ray release. Season 2 and 3 really nailed it. Mappa with the terrible time constraints and being first timers to animating AoT. A show with hundreds to even thousands of more frames an episode than most animes were bound to struggle.
I really think they shined in AoT Part 2 in nailing the cgi titans with the CGI backgrounds compared to Part 1 as well as the 2d Animation. Hyped for Part 3.

Idk, I enjoy Trigger's and arc system work's CG more and think it looks much better than chainsaw man's. It doesn't look bad by any means in chainsaw man, but I think other companies have made it fit in a lot more naturally with the style, ending up being either unnoticeable or even preferably to hand-drawn. As a tool for saving money it is improving in quality, but I think to really get CG to look great there pretty much has to have an artistic vision and attention to each frame that just ends up rivaling hand-drawn in terms of cost in which case mostcompanies have no reason to attempt it. I will say in terms of compositing they do it perfectly, the slight issues I have with it are only aimed at the character animation. Even so, in each action scene so far it looks like only about half or less of the shots are even done in CG, with most of the dynamic movements being still completely hand drawn, so they are doing pretty well at deciding to use CG for parts of the action scenes that wouldn't be that much more impactful even if they were hand-drawn.
I really liked that double bluff/lie about the side by side comparison of 2d and cg in chainsaw man. A lot of people that already have an opinion on the topic would either agree or disagree based on these subliminal suggestions that this is 2d and its good and this is cg and we dont like cg wah wah. I believed you right away and personally thought the two look the same and that it's crazy how good the cg is and then it turned they're both cg, brilliant.

CGI is a double edged sword. If used properly, it can create miracles. If not, well it can ruin entire films/series. And for Chainsaw Man they are practically betting the success of their entire studio on it by funding the production entirely by themselves, so of course it's going to look better
Glad to finally see that after Baestars and Houseki No Kuni (Land of the Lustrous) animated by Studio Orange, we have even more gorgeous CGI animation! Watching Houseki was a experience unlike any other show I'd seen, the shiny gem reflections, the nature, and the dynamic views that a regular 2D anime couldn't provide were breathtaking. Its sad it didn't blow up as much as it could've because it was created at a time where CGI was considered lower than traditional animation more so than current day. If you haven't seen it but are interested in seeing the potential of CGI, its definitely one of the best options. I'm also glad 2D animation isn't just going being erased in the future, 3D and 2D combined just makes for a combo that captures all the details you wouldn't get with just one or the other.
The latest MAPPA works actually restored my faith in CG and 2D blended anime. A great example would be Studio Ufotable too. I can see MAPPA working their way towards the level Ufotable is at today, that is being able to blend 2d and 3d animations seamlessly into one scene.

West animation is behind bc we care more with rights which push companies to regulate things, but in Japan they just accept the abuse, but exposing this problem can help great animators to have better conditions for work and better salaries.
Underrated yt fr
Anime studios using CGI does not make an animator work any less when you are apart of MAPPA or Japan in general. We just end up getting mediocre cgi and overworked animators. Japan has an extreme issue with overwork. I did an entire paper on it in college. It's horrible, and it's responsible for many great mangaka death/mental health issues and hiatuses or flat out quitting. Look at Vagabond, HxH and Tokyo Ghoul. Tokyo Ghoul mangaka even said it was horrible and he could not wait to be finished.
Let's be real here. If there's less labor they're probably just going to fire a number of animators. Just like Disney is did with their old garde 2d crew.
@@tompaauwe4565 yup. This, this isn’t a blessing. If these studios pay nothing to animators, cgi means they can fire and hire even less and give more work to those few with the excuse cgi is easier. It's interesting to see a parallel/analog with computer programming. There it is possible for us to create components that are versatile and general enough that we can just write it once, and never have to write it again, so it is automating our work essentially. Some people don't always like this, and talk about it being less fast (something that some people care much, sometimes unreasonably/incorrectly) so they are not using this automation capability and rather hand-tune everything (which sometimes comes out worse than what the computer could generate for us from the general "template" we created). Over the years, those who are sane started doing both at the same time, the most important things are analyzed whether hand-tuning would help and do it (like the hand-drawn stuff in the chain saw anime), and most of the less important stuff is left to general solutions (saves time and effort at a reasonably small cost, and sometimes better than what humans could write).
The way of thinking that "CGI is the future" is half wrong and half true, it is also an idea from 10 years ago and it still is not the future, YES it is a way to do something fast and with quality if you have time, as if putting a good team of animators to create a good anime without CGI, but the main factor is "Time". It is probably fast to create a great battle with CGI but it will never has the impact of well-created 2D. In my opinion, a bit of CGI in any anime is fine because yes, it is difficult to draw some scenes and above all, if the things in the anime are not important... come on.
But the main problem of the CGI is one of its positive characteristics the "Quick to use", this makes that when used in large quantities it causes a lot of dissociation with respect to the manga on which it is based. To give an example: it's been a while since all the idol animes use CGI for their dances, but they don't get the impact that one drawn by hand does and they all look alike in general, there are thousands of dances as many as songs, little by little they have been improving but even so they do not reach the level of one well drawn by hand.
Chainsaw man's CGI is good because it tries to become 2D anime and not try to be CGI which is VERY hard to do and takes more time than is necessary for the average company. On the other hand, the CGI still cannot reach the quality of the best anime without it and I doubt that in about 10 years or more it will be able to do it and that is known by the companies themselves. An example of this is that companies always invest in more 2D animation for more renowned animes, such as giving some names, I can say Fate, SAO, Kill la Kill, Cyberpunk Edgerunners....
my lord this video is amazing, im surprised its from such a small channel
MAPPA needed to do chainsaw man to express more action, characters overexpressed emotion, the advanced character transformations, and elements that would probably not be possible without CG.
Thank you! I knew I wasn’t crazy. As pretty and smooth chainsaw man is.. I thought it didn’t capture the feel of the manga. It needs some aggression and roughness(blue lock some scenes I think that style would kill in chainsaw). We can have pretty cgi.. but u can’t forget the fundamentals of expression over Asthetic.
I watched clips of like old 90s gore anime and 100 if people had time and their own pace, 100% chainsaw man with those animators would be insane.

Another manga enthusiast, people like you are annoying af, and anime onlys can't enjoy it because of people like you

great video! i swear, people only hate on cgi because it is cgi, not even cause its bad, its like people complaining that all animation isnt 60 fps and say “wow look at this thing that IS 60fps, all animators should animate at 60fps why are you ripping us off!!!” when the 60fps shit theyre looking at is just interpolated garbage with every frame that is ai made looking like shit, people just love to follow the masses and listen to bullshit without checking literally anything.
reminder that the same people who claim cgi is awful most likely also love ufotable fight scenes.
you know. that studio when basically the entire screen but the characters (and sometimes them too) are all cgi
I heard a small amount of murmurs about Chainsaw Man CGI and was blown away watching the show. Never felt poorly animated or out of place. It was beautiful and this one of the best looking animes alongside Violet Evergarden and My Dress-up Darling in just pure talent for the art
Great video man, you've earned my sub.
I love how well done the cgi in chainsaw man is used but man people on twitter are so picky about it which makes me sad that mappa is getting discouraged for trying something more effective and new
With the amount of recent shows that are using this type of CGI, I'd say you hit the nail on the head. CGI is truly the future that hopefully brings back western and japanese shows to usher a new era of masterpieces.
Wow, this is an excellent video by any metric, and it's made that much more impressive that you're such a small channel
Thank you man, I appreciate it
I can't believe you barely have 1k subs this was a great video
I love 2D.
Me too
lmao the one legged guy who threw his walking stick at 1:05 is legit GIGACHAD, even the laugh is so good xd
I don’t think that 3d will consume 2d, 2d is obviously always better. They will probably merge it smh
As a 3D artist, I'll say that the domain in which 2D still has a big advantage on is stylized fluids.
I'm talking about smoke, fire, WATER and blood.
It's much easier to get good looking results FAST by just drawing instead of setting up high quality simulations.
I think the only time I notice anything 3D in chainsaw man is like when I look at Denjis head when he goes chainsawin time
Yes, it looks very bad imho. It's shame as otherwise the animation is wonderful.
The fact that Houseki isn't mentioned is criminal.
We finna get an actually good berserk adaptation
I love how this guy points out the Berserk 2016-17 CGI animation. It's absolute garbage, I can confirm it, and the *CLANGS* I've suffered through still hunts me to this days.
amazing video
underatted video my main man
I don't mind CGI. CGI can be look great. But most what we get are not good. People still choose to not watch them even though they have good CGI. Example, Artiswitch. Talking about CGI, I want to see them benefit the CGI not just for cut costs.
2d monster and 2d mecha, I'm actually curious about which one is more difficult to do. There are 2 mecha anime that still in 2d this year. Kyoukai Senki and Gundam Witch. I heard that Sunrise studio teach new animators to do 2D mech. Kyoukai Senki is one of the shows they use for teach them.
For sure, its all about why they're using the tech. It's sort of a self fulfilling prophecy, where cheapo studios cheap out and use CG, so people only ever see cheap CG so they think CG is cheap, so only cheapo studios use CG etc. etc.
I'm all for creative use of CG. But Mob Psycho 100 convinced me that passionate 2D animation can never be topped.
Never ever definitely never replace handrawn is the real art we shouldn't compare with anyone
More people need to watch this... its true, us fans always complain about the fact that there is cgi use in anime but never ever think about the working conditions...mappa is working so hard to give us the rightful adaptation it deserves and there is still some bozos hating on it...haters will be haters nothin can be done
Maybe finally people are starting to realize CGI is not the problem. CGI tends to look bad because when it is used as a crutch to save budget and time, and they cut corners with it left and right, it will be cheap fast CGI and that looks bad.
It's just a medium; a good artist with proper time and resources will make it look good. MAPPA started to figure out a good balance between CGI that is less work than 2D, but still gets the effort it needs to make it work.
You earn my respect when you flipped the 2D and 3D labels, I had to subscribe, you won.
great video!! finally an anime youtuber that isn’t a total doomer about this show. unfortunately the last few youtubers i’ve seen talk about chainsaw man’s adaptation are whining nitpickers. they’re psychotic fr, just because the adaptation isn’t one to one with WHAT YOU PERSONALLY IMAGINED IT TO BE doesn’t mean it’s bad or mid. in other words the issue is with ur goofy delusional expectations not the show💀
Trigger's use of CGI in Kill La Kill was chef's kiss
Demon slayer also has really good examples of using cgi in its work
I never noticed the cg in AOT except for the callosal titan scenes
I mean the cgi still looks a bit out of place for me. Chainsaw man did a very good job but that doesnt mean it looks good it's just better than what we had. The moment he turns into a devil I have less fun watching the anime.
I've rewatched the anime 3 times from episode 1 to 4. I still don't find anything to complain about? It has one of the best animation I've ever seen for a TV anime. Every episode has the same high quality as the previous
@@gerder227 i am talking about the times when he transforms into the chainsaw. he turns to bad cgi imo. If you did not see any chainsaw cgi than I would go see a doctor your vision might be impaired
@@AizenKai. He's cgi in only moments where he is standing still and barely moving (Like standing on pile of zombies). Almost every other shot is hand drawn
@@battledroidb-121 wrong
@@AizenKai. amazing argument!
It's always about when it fits to use CGI and 2D animations. If someone knows how to use it both correctly and blend those two, then you can create some godly animations.
A lot of those detailed shots( from the Manga you displayed) can be animated in 2D. The sad problem is time and direction. If this were an OVA, or Movie, this could be done but with a weekly animated series, its pretty tough. Aside from Deathnote, Madhouse has done incredible work but I can understand Mappa's direction. If they can make it look good and keep up with the demanding schedule, so be it. I just hope this isn't an over reliance on CG because 2D is still the greatest foundation of any animator. At Least in my opinion.
Have you watched jojo? It looks like spiritual berserk for anime. berserk for anime
@@CoolManCoolMan123 wym
6:20 Clever, well played.
i’d like if more series tried to seamlessly blend 2d and 3d animation, best of both worlds :^) western toons have been doing so for a while now, mainly with vehicles and tech that’d be too hard to draw frame-by-frame (invader zim did this really well), and it’s cool to see series like chainsaw man make progress in such things in the east ^_^
i quickly notice when the 3d scene come in, the difference is the 3d scene not have stretching on the character, but on 2d there so much stretch in and out
Nah, I think 2D is better than CGI by a thousand years. 2D makes things look less realistic but…we like that a lot better! It’s what makes anime look so amazing!
Even background composites? You'd be surprised at how many you've seen and not noticed.. I think people have a fundamental misunderstanding of what CG even is and how flexible it is as a tool.
@@Jaker788 Dude I’m not saying CGI is bad or mid. I’m saying that it is good, but I like 2D better.
i’m your 1000th sub
You prompted a community post on the channel lol
CG has been part of anime for a long time and chainsaw man does it incredibly well. Of course it can be mad but more and more there are really good examples of amazing CG animation. Dorohedoro had great CG/2d integration.
Eh, I personally didn't like the CGIs they used in Dorohedoro, personally would have preferred if it was mostly 2D with 3D added when necessary. I think MAPPA has learned a lot from it though and they did a great job with CSM
Disagree, demons in chainsaw man look cartoonish and distracting, Mappa has a history of garbage cgi use, killing any and all character the original source had.
man i miss dorohedoro
