they were overengineered - they often had an 80lb forged steel crankshaft and used Chrysler Hemi 426 main bearings I repaired one at 20 years old - removed lip at top of cylinder 1 with a curved file ( front cylinder wears the most ) put new rings in it - skimmed 60-thou off the head - put in hot cam - 2 barrel carb & way better exhaust system would do 110mph at a pinch - still going today ( in original state - felt busy over 3000 rpm )
@@geraldellis2298 Are you familiar with "Uncle Tony's Garage"?...He's a car guy in general with a drag-racing background that focuses on Mopars and he's doing a speed build on a slant six right now. He's a down-to-earth guy dedicated to economy speed builds with as much DYI as possible. Sounds like you know what you're doing, but you might find it interesting. I'm not doing any builds right now, and I drive a Mazda (although I've owned my share of Mopars, the majority with /6 motors), but I still find him entertaining and informative. He also has a Sunday night chat thing that is usually fun. I Should probably mention I'm Not a paid spokesman or agent of any sort for his channel, I just enjoy it...lol...
Problem was the sump in the middle, when you take off the oil moves to the rear which makes the oil pump pickup suck air for a short while. This causes a pocket of air inside the oil system and a brief second of metal to metal contact between bearing/crank. When a slant 6 fails, its usually #5 and #6 bearings. There was no alternative to that oil pan, with suspension and k frame clearance issues.
Me too. Been watching his channel since the "Classic Car Rip-Off" video appeared in my feed about 6 months ago. Entertaining and informative guy and I don't own a Mopar right now and am not building an engine, but still I like watching..
One of the best engines ever. I wish the big three still produced the inline 6 engines today. The 225 ,the 250 , and 300 will always be great power plants. Long live the 6 .
Great car, I loved this engine, I had a 67 Dodge van w one of these, paid 50 bucks for it but needed an engine. Got one at a junkyard for 75 dollars. Since the engine was in a dome between the seats we had to carry the engine in and out the right side middle doors. We wrapped a steel cable around the engine and stuck a stainless steel bar 5 foot long and inch thick under the cable and me and a friend lifted it. I believe the stats bac then said it weighed 490 pounds. Also had 3 on the tree 3 speed. The linkage was like 8 foot long to reach the transmission LOL. This was in 1980
I got one for free an the guy said the head was cracked. An the trans was shot. Got it home checked it over an pulled the thermostat an it was bad replaced it got it running let it warm up held temp fine. Checked the trans fluid an it was low. Had it 5 yrs before I sold it. I called it my $1.95 van do to that's what it cost me to fix it........ :-D
great sound... a testament to the slant six. I had one in a dodge dart that had been sitting in a guy's backyard for something like 10 years. Dropped a new battery in a bit on gasoline down the carb and it started first crank. I gave him $500 and drove my new car home.
Great sounding car ! Must shock a few people when they see it's a six . My Dad had one in his '66 Valiant 200 , car lasted 13 Years but rusted and the motor just kept going .
Real nice! My parents had a 68 Valiant with a 225. My Mom was still driving it until she couldn't drive anymore. About 12 years back. I had one in a 65 Barracuda I got in 71. Never had a chance to do anything with it. I have a 2009 ChallengerSE now. Gonna make it breath a little better. Thanks for this video, I know a few people that built these up, in my Navy career.
Nice ride, Beautiful paint. Great wheels. And love that stripe. Never seen a stripe with the Mopar logo. How about a little test drive to show us what that mighty mopar can do?
Got nothing but love for the Chrysler 6’s Back in high school I had a friend with a Dart....4:10 , 904 and a 225 squeezing way above stock with Offy parts ..... it launched hard!
I don't know a thing about these engines and don't think I'll ever get around to build one and I regret that. I've had great success with many other makes of auto and motorcycle engines over the years. Ford and GMC straight six and a couple Olds and Buick V6. Man they made some great power and still do of course. I have always liked hot rods with anything over a small block, how boring and a slant six is right there in power and pure attitude!
That is bad ass I always wanted to tune up a Slant six with a 4bbl carb they use to race them back in the 60's in the NHRA Drag racing they were quick for a 6 cyl
That is one of the prettiest Mopars I have ever seen. I have a 1985 Dodge D150 truck that just rolled 28k miles and It's like new inside and out with no rust. I was wondering what kind of headers and mufflers you are using because they sound great! Thanks!
Awesome ride brother! That's one of the most bulletproof engine made in USA along with its cousin the jeep cherokee straight 6. You can't kill those old school inline 6 engines!
Not sure about 300 hp and where you are reading that from crank or rear tire but it is a beautiful car and that engine has a nice healthy sound and if the hood was closed I would have thought anything but a slant 6. Either way nice work you should be proud and if you posted some video of dyno pulls or drag racing that would cool to see. Looks like it still has the 7.25 differential. Better line up a 8.25 or larger before you blow that tiny little thing to pieces.
Great video Steve and your car with the Slant 6 and black paint look awesome! Thanks for sharing that link below; very interesting read. Right now my '74 model is in black primer and I think "black" is the best color choice. Mine is unique another way; it's a 4 door that has been cut and looks like an el camino style car.
The Slant6, IMO, is the best gasoline engine ever built. I had two and you could not kill them. I had a 73 Duster with a Slant-6 and had to replace the rear end with one from a 340 Demon and that little joker would smoke those tires....
Love'm. I used the slant six for years in my tow rigs. Tried to kill a tired 225 with half a million miles showing on the clock. We drained the oil and floored it. We gave up trying to grenade the motor long before it finally stopped running. Moral, don't drink and experiment!
great engine! was originally designed to be an aluminum block, but Chrysler nixed that idea, cast them from iron. as a result..those oversize main bearings..a notch bigger than even the generous big blocks had, contributed to the engines toughness. rly though, same toughness from the whole mopar engine line..just that the larger engines wound up being thrashed more..and had the power to hurt themselves..no rev limiters back in the day! 318's..again, a tough lil mill..one thing that helped it's reputation was that the valves floated in them not much more than 5,000 rpm..way above the engine's peak power producing range anyways, so that affected nothing, performance wise. kind of a an early rev limiter, if you will. enjoy that cool car!
nothing like the old mopar's from the smallest to the biggest they are the best, i am 72 now and can remember all of them i had , 225 in a duster, 440, 6pack in a G.T.X. , 340 in a dart swinger like yours. i will never forget them , and if i still had them i would be rich. my G.T.X 440-6pack 411 rear end would snap your neck and hurt you if i did not tell every one in the car what and when i was going to do before i did it. those big block mopars made awesome power right out of the box. if you did a little work they became very dangerous machines , if you did not know how to handle them they would quickly get out of hand. those were the days when you could walk in a show room and say i will take that 426 hemi and walk out with a car very under rated at 425 hp . i was so luckey to be alive , single , and with a good job, and money in my pocket. have fun MR steve

I drove slant sixes for about 25 years- one of the most reliable engines ever made. Period. The engines often outlasted the vehicles they were in!!!
NipkowDisk ..I love the slant 6..I have a 1984 d100 with a slant 6 as my daily driver.......slant 6, "the leaning tower of power"

Most Chrysler engines outlasted the vehicles they were in of that era.
All you had to do is keep the oil changed.
Hey I can relate!!!
One of the best engines ever. I wish the big three still produced the inline 6 engines today. The 225 ,the 250 , and 300 will always be great power plants. Long live the 6 .
I'm a ford guy, but this engine is one of the most durable and sweetest sounding engines ever made!
Thx, it gets lots of attention at the local car shows.. usually the only slant there.
what esle do you expect its mama mopar at her best
@@josefrobbins8781 The slant fits into a smaller space. The 300 has torque for days.
@@josefrobbins8781 I had a 1968 Ford falcon with a 200 straight 6 as well as a 91 Ford F-150 with the inject 300 six, both amazing durable engines!

Sweet. Awesome job with it. I never would have believed you could get a slant six to sound like that.
God that is a beautiful ride ! One of the most underrated motors of all time !!!

Agree, the slant six was a very good mill.
I do find it a bit of a stretch that it can churn 300 hp, though.
I was to.. 👍
So what's the recipe for 300hp? Shave the head ...hot cam..4 brl carb?offy intake.?
They're running in the 11s in the 1/4, naturally aspirated. I'm guessing that's at least 300hp. It probably requires lots of cubic dollars though.
I seen it done on horsepower TV I believe it was engine masters if I'm not mistaken and a couple other videos as well
Love the car. I'm building a 67 Dart with a slant six. Awesome job
awesome year, I wanna see it when your done!!
