Even though she struggled in understanding, whenever she spoke it was crisp, clear and well phrased.
Actually, Felix always speaks slowly, even in English, that's just his way. You can see, especially in things he's written, that he's always trying to be very deliberate and precise with his words. I also believe he is specifically careful knowing he's speaking in public. I think that also played a big part in those clips from his early days - to me it looks mostly like nerves making it difficult to focus on and catch what someone is saying in a foreign language (it is very intimidating initially to be suddenly surrounded by native, idiomatic, and quick language you know to a limited degree). I similarly ask someone to repeat but process what they said the first time in the meantime - even in my native language, if I'm nervous haha
I would be also very interested in an analysis of Bang Chan's language. To me he seems to be speaking Korean on a native level and that's how I think about him, especially considering he's a lyricist too. But then from time to time I'm reminded that actually his first language is English. I'm not sure if he's actually bilingual, from what I understand he wasn't any more than Felix growing up - however he came over and became a trainee as a child, so that probably is what gives him this fluency.
To me one of the most interesting things about Lisa's Korean is her aegyo. That's kind of another level of picking up on linguistic and cultural subtleties, isn't it? Part of it is just her personality, and I suppose it's probably at least somewhat common among young girl trainees, but still, I find it interesting and impressive.
For Bang Chan, I get the impression he grew up speaking both in his household. Probably grew up speaking more English as he would have been enrolled in Australian school, but I'm fairly confident he would converse with his family in Korean too! I know his sister Hannah speaks pretty good Korean (not absolutely perfect but definitely quite proficient/considered fairly fluent) even though she has not lived in Korea! 😊💖
But I'd definitely agree, moving to Korea as a trainee from a young age would absolutely have an influence!!

I think Bang Chan grew up bilingual. In a vlog where they visit his house, you hear him speak Korean to his parents.
I assumed he grew up bilingual because I’ve only ever seen his mom speak Korean and when she speaks English, she has a strong accent. And Hannah said that she’s fluent in Korean (even though she lives in Australia) and I’ve seen her speak Korean to her mom in her vlogs multiple times. So Bangchan would definitely speak Korean as well especially that he moved to Korea and is living in Korea right now. I think it’s kind of like me where my family speaks Spanish but I was raised in the US, so the language I learned in school and that I use everyday now is English while at home it’s Spanish and English.
chan said that at home his parents spoke both korean and english, so he probably grew up fluent in both! his sister hannah also is, so yeah

actually for all my korean learners out there, I would recommend listening to felix's lives because even though he might sometimes make some mistakes (but to be fair native speakers make mistakes too), he speaks very slowly and chooses interesting yet simple vocab which makes him much easier to understand than other members. plus he's got this deeeeep voice ya know what i'm sayin haha 🩷

On the one hand im fascinated how non natives speak korean. But on the other hand as a korean american ive had my korean analyzed and picked on to the point of embarassment. I guess be gentle its really hard to speak any language to point of fluency once you are an adult. Dont let accent or wrong grammar get in the way of your langugage journey. I wish someone had told me when i was young.
Same here. I came to the States when I was 5. The biggest takeaway from this video for me is immersion - very rapid and intense immersion - is a huge factor in fluency. I'm sure if you or I moved to Korea, our Korean would improve dramatically in a short time since we understand the structure and sounds of Korean.

Since Rosé was born in Australia also and in Chan's case he was born in Korea but moved to Australia when he was very young, then moved back to Korea as a young teen, so it'd be interesting to know your thoughts on how that affected his speaking/reading.

I would be interested in seeing the reverse of this: Korean idols who learned/are learning English. It would be interesting to understand the difference between the language, how Koreans tackle the types of challenges a native English speaker may also encounter learning Korean. For example, I know there are certain letters in English that don't appear in Korean: such as F, R, V, Z. Combining certain syllables help produce the sounds for Q, W, X, and Y. To this day, ㄹ, ㅉ, ㄲ, ㅆ (well, double consonants in general) give me trouble.
Learning English for a Korean is just like a Westerner trying to learn Korean. In that they start at the very basic level from simple common phrases or sentences and learning the alphabet. They use books with translation and listen to audio examples of correct pronunciation and sentence structure. Then they practice saying them out loud with other people. If you've never taken a foreign language at school, then you know it's not that easy. Most foreign language classes start out this way. You sound like you've never taken a foreign language class wanting to know how idols can learn to speak English. No one is going to show you how these idols learned by video evidence. That's personal for the idols growth as a performer and part of their training. The companies won't show that. They only want you to see the result after they debut and become popular.
@@kguerr197 Idols have publicly shared their experiences learning English (or other languages). The "video evidence" you spoke of is in fact found in Vlives, Weverse lives, insta lives, Tiktok lives, and CZcams lives. My suggestion of "seeing the reverse" of this TTMIK video isn't malicious.
For example, all eight Stray Kids members have talked about learning English (or Japanese, or French, etc) across their content. The information included how they approach studying a language, things that trip them up, frustrations, differences in languages, etc. I've watched other BG & GG members talk about the same topics. So, yes, idols have publicly shared this. Gathering all that info in one video would be challenging, but not impossible, which was why I mentioned to TTMIK that such a video would appeal to me.
Last thing, I've learned two languages over 50 years for work. I currently study my third, Korean, also for work. I find it encouraging and energizing to see any celebrity I respect has worked toward a similar goal.

I'll be honest, I don't think he was _actually_ eliminated at all, nor was Lee Know. JYP had said there was a chance of eliminations, so he was _appearing_ to make good on his threat, both to galvanise the audience behind the boys, and also to reinforce to the boys themselves the gravity of what they were doing; kind of a kick in the pants to make sure they didn't get complacent. I think JYP had every intention to bring Felix and Lee Know back, and the "reasons" he gave for eliminating them were just for show.

I think it would be interesting to look at skz Bang Chans Korean too cos I've noticed that Chan sometimes doesn't understand some words or some ppl say he has a slight aussie accent when he speaks. Felix has gotten much better because he had to put in a lot more effort into learning it and attended literal Korean classes but I think Chan's family spoke more Korean at home and Chan attended highschool in Korea so he didnt really have as much 'exclusively Korean' training that Felix did.
since chan came to Korea at such an early age he must have had a different experience than Felix learning the language. By the time stray kids were being formed he had a strong grasp on it but felix had just arrived in Korea 🥺

This is such an interesting video, I had always wondered how non-korean speaking idols learned and progressed so quickly. Repetition and immersion is truly one of the best ways (for me)! I also think a lot of it has to do with frequency of exposure and availability to using the new language (I'm learning but progressing much slower than I'd like bc no one around me speaks korean so although my writing and reading is getting better, my speaking and listening in real time is very far behind). I have certainly picked up a lot of Korean phrases, but I would not be proficient at putting a full conversation together, unless it was extremely basic.
Another challenge I've encountered is what your primary language is growing up. As English is my first and primary language, learning Korean is extremely difficult. It is unlike anything I can compare to in English unlike if I tried to learn Spanish or Italian which have a shared Latin root and you can somewhat guess meanings even without proficiency. The English alphabet is nothing like a character based language and it is not spoken or written in the same sentence structure like a character based language.
So I can only hope that the few times I do get to speak to a native-Korean speaker that they are kind and understand how these challenges present roadblocks along the learning journey. Not that I would assume they would be unkind, but in my own family who speaks Cantonese (which my parents did not teach my sibling and I), I am ridiculed, embarrassed and othered by family members and other (unrelated) Cantonese speakers when I do try to speak in Cantonese and it doesn't encourage a beginner to want to progress (and makes me feel disconnected from my own culture/identity), it only makes me revert back to my primary language, English.
My friend's first born speaks both English and Spanish. His parents primarily speak English around him (though they are fluent in Spanish) and are reaching him Spanish, when he is with his Grandmother she only speaks to him in Spanish and in school he learns English. It has been a true pleasure seeing him learn both languages!

I don't know how I feel right now... Encouraged or discouraged. Lately I've been doing reading (which makes me so nervous) with 2 of my teachers. When I read out loud by myself, I can read better, but in front of others is so hard for me... I get so nervous. Then there is the factor that I don't know all the words so I'm trying to read *and* understand at the same time. I can only hope that like Lisa (since she didn't have the advantage of Korean family members) I can get better. Definitely, living in Korea has helped both of them because they are surrounded by the language all day.
I really appreciate channels and content like this. I started the Korean language just 40 days ago as an American, both with an online course, a private tutor once a week and attending Korean church. I am still very much a beginner, but I already can at least pronounce most syllables correctly even if there are a few consonants and vowels that give me trouble. I study diligently for 3 hours a day everyday, trying to work up to 6 hours a day everyday within the next 2-3 months. My tutor is surprised how much progress I am making and I have to admit each time I understand something new it is motivation to keep trying harder. It's my hope that in 2 years I will be conversational and fluent in 5-7 years. But of course I plan to travel to Korea many times between now and then because there is no better practice than being immersed and put on the spot.

As a native Korean, I've listened to this full interview twice. I can confidently say that her Korean pronunciation and accent are very smooth, quite close to that of an average Korean except for some instances. Remarkably, she delivers her thoughts very clearly and fluently without needing to use advanced vocabulary, especially considering she has only lived in Korea for seven years.

To be honest, I find the different alphabet and the reading/writing the most difficult part. I mean of course, starting out it's very difficult to overcome your shyness and say anything, no question about it. And spoken Korean is undoubtedly very different to the official rules (which I guess is true of any language). But with listening, there's more opportunities to catch parts you do know or understand, use context clues, and rewind or ask the person you're talking to to repeat or rephrase. Plus, you pick things up by just being around the language and practicing listening. To me it's very frustrating that I can't seem to get hold of reading/writing, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better despite me trying very hard and putting in a lot of dedicated work. It makes me illiterate and that's very discouraging. Back when I was learning English, of course spelling and learning correct pronunciation took time, but it was nowhere near this difficult as not knowing the very shape of the letters themselves. I've gone from being maybe not extremely quick or clever, but pretty intelligent about learning languages - to helpless.
I feel like of I got the hang of it, I would have so much more material to work with - but I can't find any helpful apps (or worksheets) to practice on the go in my native language (Polish) and the English transcriptions only make things a hundred times more confusing (it's almost like learning yet ANOTHER and very counter-intuitive way of writing things down). I wish there were some materials using the phonetic alphabet available.
So, to me a simple sentence which I already understand when spoken to or could construct verbally if given time suddenly becomes an overwhelming riddle when written down actually haha
Something similar happens to me. My native language is Spanish, and then learned English, but now with Korean a lot of material is only in English and you know, It feels a little bit bad or weird when you see a translation in English of the word in Korean, but you don't know how it translates to your mother language. Even though it has helped a lot with my English (I have to watch content in English even if I don't want to). And with the alphabet thing, I already know how to read it since last year but I cannot read like fast or something, I have to take a bit sometimes to read a word properly aaaaand also when you don't know the meaning, it's like the whole sentence has no sense because of 'that' word (not in every case, but that's my opinion)

Felix speaks English slowly as well, it's just his way of thinking and being careful about what he says. I'm glad you were positive about them both and thank you for all the work you do, but I must say I don't love analyzing foreigners' Korean it just seems mean.

To hear him tell it, Felix didn't really speak _any_ Korean before getting ready to move there. Nowadays, however, even when with his family in Australia, they bounce between the two languages quite a bit. If I were to guess, the rest of the family started getting back into the Korean language now they knew they'd have regular connection with the country, where they didn't feel the need before.
What we do know, though, is that Felix is extremely focused and dedicated. He doesn't consider himself a particularly _fast_ learner, but has a single-minded focus that if he wants to learn something, he'll do it _properly._
I probably have more difficulties in reading, instead of speaking. Sometimes it is hard for me to read texts in one go and I need a few seconds to look at the word and imagine how to correctly pronounce the word. Meanwhile in speaking, I think I am more comfortable with it, but I just get stuck on how I word a sentence, making it a bit difficult to communicate something sensed. Also, because I am from Italy and I am studying languages, making sentences is what concerns me the most, because I tend to use an english sentence structure and translate it directly to german. Same for korean, where I take an english sentence and then translate every single word, wondering if the sentence structure is right.

1. He is not half korean. He is fully korean of ethnicity and has an australian nationality.
2. It doesn't matter. Korean is not his first language and he said in a live that he only knew how to count numbers and had to learn the language from scratch. He was also eliminated by jyp cause he couldn't speak korean. He did not speak korean at home in australia. English is his first language. He also did not come in contact with the korean language at all.

It's obviously somewhat harder for someone whose parents speak Thai at home to pick up Korean. But what I'm interested in is any example of someone whose mother tongue is even more different than Korean. The phonology of Thai to me seems relatively close to that of Korean. I wonder how would a native German who comes to Korea at age 14 sound like.
