One of the things that I love about you and Herb, Steve, is that you don't get all gaga over a piece of equipment simply because it costs an arm and a leg. Cheap stuff that sounds good can get you just as excited! I love that. Thanks, guys!
amen---totally opposite of that weaver cat and his olive martinis.
I bought a reisong tube amp, 350.00 usd on steves advise what a great piece of equipment beats out pieces 4 time that price
I second that opinion.
i bought a philips amplifier with low power but when conecting it, i was kind of struck by lightening ,the way the high´s sounded ,this already having heard the best from Pioneer, Sansui, Kenwood or Marantz(that in the 80´s had the sound of this litle 79 F series from philips) i paid less of what today is 20 € and for two years i stoped my spec-1 and 2 to listen to this litle philips, both my pre and power amplifier from Pioneer were given to me by my father ,not my choice but i used to listen to music on them before they were mine(without permission)
Herb is delightfully quirky. More Herb please.
yes
I met Herb at the Capital Audio Fest last year. He was speaking to a few other luminaries in the business, and I listened, didn't speak, I was mesmerized. Steve, once again your skills bring out the best of each guest.
Yes, saw him (didn’t meet him) last year, subbing for Steve in a “types of speakers” discussion. Better than seeing Bob Dylan in concert.
Grow up, you are uncomfortable to be arund
" '68 to now is at least 30 years" true statement. 😁
Duh... Hilarious !
I was born in 64 so yes he is correct lol
@@scottyo64 I was born in 65', so I can verify that the math is 100% accurate. 🤔
It's at least 10 years also
These are the video's I enjoy the most, when you interview fellow audiophiles and today's was a screamer! Nice one mate.👍
The wisdom and no bullshit approach is the best. Cheers Mr Reichert
Herb's the Bomb and Steve's the Igniter! You guys are Great! Thanks. F
love it !!!!!!
I'm going on 74 and you guys reminiscing of the various gear you had was so awesome! Had me remembering my past Audio Gear and some of my first Solid State Gear which I thought was so cool after ditching my Tube Amps! LOL!
Man. I love these type of conversations and I really miss the music rooms walk around talks interviews and chats.
I had a moment of realization that all of us are after the same thing, we just approach it in different directions. I began with 'imaging', then chased 'tonality', then pursued 'resolution', and finally after achieving a balance of these, I found the right mix of equipment (for me in my room on my budget, $5,000) that elicits the 'emotion' of the musician and the moment. Be encouraged! You are on the right path, maybe just coming at it from a different angle than others!
Excellent casual interview with the sights and sounds of NY in the background and of course Herb, a treasure in hifi. You're both lucky to have each other as friends and a great cheer to you both from Ottawa, Canada. Stay healthy, we want more of you both for many years to come!
As someone from Glasgow in Scotland even more interesting 👍💙
God bless all the Canadian truckers , you must proud !
It's the love of music that gets me to look for your videos. All the way from London, England.
Amazing to listen to your friends stories. Passion that's what you both have. To boys in a candy shop. Thanks Steve for keeping it real man....
Herb is so on point and so funny too. Loved this vid. You can tell you guys are old friends. Thanks, Herb and Steve!
Loved the King 1 and King 2 story!
@@scottyo64
Haha! Totally, man. That was a good one.
I just ordered an Audio Technica AT-VM95 before finishing the video. :D
The great thing about the new VM95 is you can upgrade the stylus within the same line and save a few bucks and the hassle of swapping out the whole cartridge.
My TT came with the VM95E and I upgraded to the VM95EN stylus.
Thanks Steve and Herb! I’m of a similar vintage as you guys and I still fondly remember listening to “The Wall” hours on end with my Technics receiver, Technics turntable, and big Fisher speakers. In my college fraternity we catalogued all of our cassette tapes so we could play a game called select hits. You would give the “DJ” the side and counter number so no one knew what was coming until he hit play. My roommate in that fraternity opened my audio world from classic rock in Georgia to his eclectic library from Buffalo New York which included jazz and blues. It always has been and always will be about the music and our community.
Love the pointing on the brick wall behind Herb. Some quality workmanship.
I noticed that also ... Kinda funny
More Steve and Herb!! Would love to hear you guys reminisce about Art D some day.
Herb is such an interesting individual. I bet he's a blast to have coffee with. Great interview! ☕👍
Love Herb, wish he was on more
@perl man my thought exactly 🤣
I could of listened to a longer interview it was that good. A true love of music. Herb inspired me to restore my Thorens and add it back into my stereo system. I love your interviews keep them coming!
Absolutely love these kind of videos, they are truly a feeling of great joy for me. GREAT JOB STEVE!!!
Herb, your column should be called; "Cookin'.......with Herb and spices!"
Great interview Steve n Herb, two zen masters, love the both of you, stay well
This video brings me such great joy. I think of the many friends I have had in the audiophile world and the remarkable used audio equipment we experienced. You and Herb just capture the essence of what the hobby can be for many of us. Thanks for sharing.
Love Herb, I met him at CAF 2019 and he was wondering how to get upstairs we were working on the mezzanine level and that hotel in Rockville is strange with the way it is set up I showed him where the stairs were and he thanked me graciously and went on about his business. Maybe 2 to 3 hours later he walked by and thanked me again because he knew where to go because I was out in the hallway again, we laughed together it was great, Thanks Steve maid me smile thinking about that
"eccentric weirdos but smart eccentric weirdos" QFT!
Always enjoyed Herb's editorials and talking with Herb at Peter Breuninger's events. I'm pretty sure our phone conversations back in the day kept AT&T in business, LOL.
Happy to see the thermionic glow still burning bright!
Many thanks, Steve for bringing Herb to us on your CZcams channel.
Great interview good to see you guys!Very interesting information and informative. Fascinating tidbit about Bob Dylan and how that particular cut was recorded!!
Keep up the good work, and keep on spinning!
Who doesn't enjoy a little Herb now and again?
Excellent interview...
The honking of the horn in the background just adds ambience that seems really neat on the street interview
And you just wonder how long it’s going to take for someone to shut off their car alarm.
Thanks, Steve & Herb for posting this and sharing your time with us while we are all in the limbo of a pandemic driven social isolation! Watching this video has been the highlight of my audiophile week.
Greetings from India. Really enjoyed this video. It's like listening in on a laidback conversation taking place at a pub, where we're fortunate enough to be part of. I'm only a couple of years younger than both of you, so it was enjoyable to reflect back on our music system buying and listening experiences over the years. Thanks again.
Great, great interview Steve. Thank you very much for posting this. Please keep having him around. You and Herb are national treasures my friend.
Great interview, agree some of my best friends have that quirky love for audio and they all enjoy life. Thank you Steve!
Thanks for making this, comes across as just stopping on the street to chat about hi-fi. Just what I needed in these crazy times.
This is what being an audiophile is all about. Sharing the journey, enjoying the music and the gear, looking forward and looking back. Bravo, Steve!
Great interview two of my favorite people. April 2011 I bought my first Stereophile magazine recommended components issue. I was looking to totally change my system. The writers we’re people I could identify with, and they were very entertaining. Later when Sam and Stephen left, I thought it’s going to be hard to replace these gentlemen. Then Herb came aboard and after reading his first article, I knew everything would be OK. Steve another great episode!
I really enjoyed listening to you two discussing audio and your careers. I always come away with knowledge and more enthusiasm than I possessed before. Thanks for doing this.
i enjoy reading Herb's column every month but still miss Sam Telig and his cat. I think it's important to cover the affordable end of the market because you can catch the younger crowd and bring some fresh blood into the fold.
And Lars I think that was his friends name
@@jerrysnead2842 Yes, Lars!
Two of my favorite people in the audio world, what more could I ask for? Really enjoyed this one!
Herb's the kind of person you want to hang out with. Enthusiastic and a great story teller.
Wow, what a great episode. I love these guys. This is what this hobby is about, fantastic and well engineered product hidden in plain sight. It takes a lot of time, dedication and commitment to discover these. Thank you for an excellent episode. I would not think twice about picking some of these up. Keep up the good work.
Thank you two. It was great to hear the two of you talking.
Herb is a huge reason I subscribe to Stereophile, great stuff Steve, thanks for this one
That was a blast Steve. Love these interviews with Herb.
Loved this conversation! So cool hearing you old-ish dudes talking all that well deserved street cred wisdom for all of us who’ve tiptoed into hifi gear but to nowhere near the extent. Great post Steve! And thank you Herb…really enjoyed every bit of it
Wow, wow and wow again! No BS, great stuff.
Thanks guys it really was a blast.
Cheers
A couple of my favorite smart eccentric guys in audio. Always a joy to hang out with you guys. I do enjoy getting to know you and some of the other legends like Nelson Pass, Peter Qvortrup John Atkinson Arnie Nudell and Paul Mcgowan through CZcams. The DIY community is pretty interesting as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed that thank you so much :) wonderful video, Herb you're a star :)
Herb is the man. Thanks for all of the charming shop talk that keeps me justifying my "quirky hobby" that most of my peers just don't get.
This video brightened up my day. Thank you.
Very cool. I hope there are young guys to carry the torch of tube audio and vintage style gear. Love to hear the stories.
It's hard not to like you two men "in your best age" (like me) with a lovely boyish heart talking about their passion. It reminds me of the passage of the song "what a wonderful world": "I see friends shaking hands; Saying how do you do; They're really saying; I love you". I could listen to you guys all day - and then some. Thanks for sharing your experience, opinions and not least passion for music and the equipment we use to get the communication right :-).
Great interview Steve and Herb and I streamer and listened to the Cosmos album mentioned...just wow, I have never of Cosmos or his music and the recording is simply stunning. Keep on doing what you do anf please keep throwing in some artists each time. Brilliant
So good to see Herb again 😊
Fantastic and interesting interview. That was really interesting meeting another of your friends in the biz.
That was fun 👍
Great to see Herb back again
I first ran into Herb through the pages of Sound Practices where he demonstrated a strong understanding of what we all are looking for, that emotional connection using old gear. Great interview
Hey Bob. just played the Bev's an hour ago!
@@bobaranyi8949 well great to hear from you and I’m glad the Bev2s are in caring hands, they are awesome speakers/OTL setup. Still in Chicago?
@@bobsmoot8454 I am in a Northern suburb of Chicago! I just had one of the amps worked on by another Bev owner. Only needed a new Cap in the power supply. It was the amp that Harold converted for you from originally being a 2sw. Many thanks! Bob
Another fantastic interview for the record books. Herbs is always a treat.
One of the best little nuggets of Audiophiliac's vblog is discovering those music gem recommendations from Steve and his guests. And boy o' boy did Herb come through with Michael Payton's Afro-Caribbean Mixtape. This is an astonishing album. The fusion of jazz, hip hop, latin jazz, afro-funk, all wrapped into one amazing album. The rich sound and texture coming through my B&W 706 S2...Wow, wow, wow. Thanks again Steve.
This is one of my favorite audio videos. Thank you.
Thank you Steve for the best 24 minutes of my day a great video loved it.👍
Awesome interview. Thank you both!
Thanks Steve and Herb you made my day...again ...as a Dane with a longlife facination of NY those outdoor videos are the best ... keep them comming..
Ahh…missed y'all by mere hours in Brooklyn. Great stuff here, and bringing up memories of my own, in and out of the audio biz, and my own audio adventures.
It is always an interesting visit when Herb stops by. There is a lot of truth in his assessment of the state of the hobby when Dynaco was around. It would be nice to see Herb as a regular here. He brings additional insight and perspective. Thank you both for your work and casual observations.
Thanks Steve and Herb. Really needed this.
Very insightful interview with a walking library of audiophilia. I wish I had that impressive market survey of Herb, would save my a lot of money on my audiophile try-and-error career over decades.
That was fun. Great getting Herb Reichert’s musings over all that is audio.
That blew my mind when herb recommended Audio Tech. Ordered one from radio shack and thought this can’t be true, was already a stereophile subscriber so l knew the thousand dollar options-not a bad decision for a quick fix! Influenced by an ad in said magazine-Greetings from Chicago Herb!
You guys inspire me to check out new gear , I think this is your 3rd video together if I’m right and you 2 are a vast knowledge
What a likeable guy Herb is! Fun to hear him talk about his experiences.
Steve, really enjoy all your reviews and audio info and experiences. Just came into knowing you grew up in Far Rockaway way back. So did I in, the 50's/60's up until about 1970. We must have crossed paths, LOL. I lived on Central Ave. a block away from the Chevrolet dealer on the corner of Nameoke. What memories!
Lovely interview. Herb is my fave writer for some time. A great addition to Stereophile !
Steve, please have Herb on more often, Nelson Pass too. I love their stories and the way they share knowledge.
You gotta love Herb! Such a true gentleman!
Great questionning on this one Steve. Got Herb to explain while making it flow even more.
I love this video. Herb is an extremely likeable guy. Thanks for posting.
As a vinyl returnee, last tt was an entry level Dual, Sony entry level receiver, Sony single cassette player, Bose 501's which I bought late 70's. Early eighties, just listened to FM and cassettes thru various means. Listening was purely casual from that point until now. Just bought DIY Audio ACA (from listening to your glowing review) and Klipsch r51m, Pro-ject elemental tt, Node 2i and lets see what happens! Love you & Herb's conversations and hearing about other affordable to me audio choices, thanks to you both!
Thank you Steve! And thank you herb! Always a treat to listen to herb. Fun to listen to his stories! And they don't have to all be about audiophile. I think herb needs to tell some stories about his previous life building race cars. Heard him mention that a time or 2 and more curious about it. Herb brought up a great idea. Need to get herb together in a video chat session with Nelson, dan dagastino, along with Jason and like from schiit audio. That would be interesting listening to stories just flow! Thanks again and herb you need to make more appearances on Steve's channel !
We love you Herb!
Great interview! Herb is a God to me for recommending the Shure SC35C/Mani combo; it's been a life changer.
Great video. Thanks both!
Brooklyn ambience only adds to this interview...thank you both.
Excellent Steve and Herb. Thanks for the tips...
Passion and perception without pretension. So great to hear.
Love your talks with people that are so passionate about their hi fi
A word to the wise: Herb can be persuaded to consult privately on system configuration and component choice. All of that accumulated wisdom and cool on tap. Best investment ever!
how to do this?
Happy to provide you with an email address but would prefer not to post it publicly. Will try to find a PM function.
really enjoyed all of the unpretentious little dogs...
Thanks Steve and Herb...🚀
Fun. Thank you Steve and Herb.
I simply love your channel, Steve! I must smile how many reviewers still like their LS 3/5 so as Herb also does. I am wondering how many similar seized speakers came along since the launch of the LS3/5. louder ones, deeper going ones, „faster“ ones...but....
Great interview Steve. Good stories!
I'd like to believe I'm also a smart and eccentric weirdo as I thoroughly enjoyed your conversation with Herb. You two are truly a legendary meeting of audiophile minds...
Absolutely fantastic episode!
Added to my bucket list - dinner with you two guys!
So nice man, just a pleasure to listen )
His Herbness!
Gotta double thumbs up somehow...
For this special episode I hooked the phone up to my EL34 amp and transmission line speakers. I hope Herb would approve.
Herb's reviews are usually the only ones I bother with at Stereophile ;-)
Sons of Kemet are amazing. Remind me of the Jazz Warriors with Courtney Pine in the UK in the early 90s...
can never get enough of herb
Great job! Cool to hear this history.
Great job Steve and Herb.. Good informations and stories 👍🤗
