    It's all about aspect ratio for me. Above 50 is the minimum. 75 or thereabouts is optimal. I've run 265 70 18s and 275 65 18s with good results. Unsprung weight can be an issue and affect ride quality, so I try to keep it low. You should really calculate what the weight difference is. 20 lbs per tire and I'd stick with 16s. 50lbs a tire, and I'd go with 18s. And dont forget about the tire volume for inflating after deflating. It makes a big time difference.

      That is by far some of the most intelligent information that has been passed on to me in quite some time - thank you!
      Now I must weigh these wheels haha

    Keithy - beware that the in-wheel TPS sensors will need thier length extending in order to clear the rim thickness as the alloys are significantly thicker in that area. It's a simple job you can make yourself. Will look at the parts I used to remind me what size stand-offs I used.

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  Před rokem

      Thanks for bringing that up mate, that’s a very important consideration.

    • @zaphodbb
      @zaphodbb Před rokem +1

      @@Keithy_WI used M6 Male/Female, 12mm long brass stand-offs. The sensor part on my TPS was held by a 4mm hex-head bolt to the valve part, I removed that and found the valve part was slightly larger than 6mm, so the female threaded part of the stand-off needs opening out slightly (you also need to slot this end to allow the air in/out). The male end needs filing - shorter length and flats filed, lastly you need to drill a 4mm hole through the centre and buy longer hex head set-screws. If I could post a picture it would be easy to see what I mean...

    Stick with 16 inch wheels. If weight is a concern I would go for a 16 inch P38 alloy. They are strong and shouldn't brake. Had 16 inch alloy, running KO2's on my old one 👍

    @madismaekivi6800 Před rokem +1

    I would say practicality over looks and would stay at 16" steels. Yeah the 18" looks nice as well, but P38´s are meant to look mean so let those newer ones (mall 4x4s) use those fancy wheels :D
    Plus for example worse case scenario, you can straighten the steel rim with hammer in a bush but not aluminum ones. Steel ones can take lot of punishment.

      G’day mate, hello from a long way overseas!
      Haha you know how to say it - would you believe I’m torn between the 18” and 16”, and now this new HD Terrain tyres too! It’s such a tough choice mate!
      If only I could have both!

    @trendysoil6373 Před rokem +1

    Are you upgrading brakes where you’ll need a bigger rim to accommodate callipers etc? If not stick to 16’s.
    I have 16 Steel rims also and with an aggressive tread tyre they look and take care of business.
    I’m in the ville too, seen your bus in the flesh. The black Steelies look mad.
    BF’s are a premium tyre. I’ll run Toyo open country next after getting 4.5 years out of my dueller MT’s.
    Do you run a 5 wheel rotation to get the best use out of your full size spare? Best thing I ever did.

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  Před rokem

      Yeah I have upgraded the front brakes, but not to the point where the 16” wheels don’t fit. But you have a good point. The main reason I was looking to use the 18” wheels is that I already have them, they’re genuine Land Rover wheels, and they are lighter than the steel wheels. That aside I think the mob have spoken! It almost seems unanimous!
      Oh nice! No doubt you’ve waved and I’ve blindly missed you on the roads! Don’t be afraid to pull me up for a chat 👍🏻 I’ve head many good things about the Toyo’s too - they’re on the list! Decision time is coming!
      Indeed I do. You’re absolutely right - mad if you don’t!

  • @ned900
    @ned900 Před rokem +1

    i reckon the alloy weighs the same as the smaller steel rim, there is probably very little in it.
    So then its a matter of preference. Did you notice a difference in comfort levels with the 18s as opposed to the 16's ?
    The mondials are an interesting wheel.... im half thinking on getting a set, i have 16's on at the moment. Its a good car for wheel choices, there are loads of options.

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  Před rokem

      Thanks mate, it’s definitely a tough decision! Originally when I got the KM3’s it wasn’t hard to choose, but these days they’re making strong tyres for an 18” wheel in a 33” size. Choices choices!

  • @anthonyscolyer2444
    @anthonyscolyer2444 Před rokem +1

    Hi Keithy, I'm afraid I'm probably going against the grain here. Black rims for me are Simsmetal material. I hate them, look dirty and cheap. My Autobiography has those 18" Mondials which I am looking to put into storage for some standard 16" alloys so I can run a taller sidewall. That's what I would have! The 18s ride too rough for me, currently has 255 55 highway junk on the car when I bought it.. I know I am going against the grain on previous comments but you wanted some opinions!

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  Před rokem

      And there’s nothing wrong with going against the grain mate! I’d like to see a good looking tall tyre on the 16 and 18 inch landy wheels. If I’m honest, I would have preferred them, but the biggest decider was both time and cost. To get a set of 16” rover wheels to here is hideously expensive!

    If your looking for something different a set of BFG Ko2 all terrain tyres are a good choice but if you want to stick with mud tyres keep using the km3s.
