  • Getting the perfect miter is not always easy and a shooting board is sometimes difficult to master. for most picture frames and household trim, the miter shear can do amazing things. SO what is a miter trimmer? it is a tool to quickly and easily cut perfect Miters at almost any angle you want.

    I own this same mitre chop tool and use it almost every day to chop maple oak and sapele. Its a great tool for any mitre work that requires 1x2 inch stock cut ar 45 degrees.

    As a teen I irked with a very smart trim carpenter who used one of these extensively. When doing high scaffolding work, he would pre cut all his wood and up he would go!
    Between this tool, a hand plane, pull stroke saw and and a small assortment of hand tools? He would kick out the most exacting work fast......only coming down when absolutely neccessary! Never realized how truly spectacular this man was with his craft until future experience finishing behind other carpenters revealed his skills by comparisons. An incredible tool that is as valuable today as it was (when first introduced) in the 1880’s. (Basically unchanged too and sure cuts down on job noise.)

    My father used one for close to 50 years and now I have it and love it. Been working as a finish carpenter and cabinet maker for over 40 years. I tried for years to get him to give it to me after he retired, however even though he parted with many tools he wouldn’t give it up until he passed. You do need to be very careful because when sharp the blades are literally as sharp as razor blades. I have nicked myself just trying to move wood shavings, use a brush or scrap, keep you fingers clear at all times. It is most definitely my favorite tool for water tight meters and I love how clean each cut and how tight each fit.

    From what I was told these are very popular with picture framers! Just gettin that slither of perfection on that 45° cut. That would be a very awesome idea James if you did some videos on restoring these old tools as that's what I'm into. Most people cringe when I show them some tools that I have in my collection that are refinished, they say that is very beautiful but you should have left it alone, or "THE PATINA, THE PATINA ITS GONE......NO NO NO. To each there own I say and I enjoy giving ols tools new life. Makeing them look brand spanking new again. I like to strip it down and make it look brand new again. I know "Hand Tool Rescue" rescue is right below me in the comments (also subbed) and he does some amazing, amazing work but it would be fun to see you do some rest-o projects too. Also could you elaborate more on what this Mid-West Tool Collectors Association is? I've looked it up but haven't found much, is it a club or a membership? I would like to get involved as I'm very into the old tools and restoring them. I find holding a wooden handled screwdriver much more satisfying than a plastic one. Call me crazy!!! Thanks James, great video keep up the good work

      Thanks. I feel the same way. all the blue tools in my shop are ones I have restored and I paint my own tools blue. I just like the way it makes the shop look. I have over 75 videos on tools I have restored. and I will be doing more this summer. it is something I enjoy greatly.
      As to MWTCA it is a group that organizes tool shows around the US and a few in other countries. we are trying to get shows in every state and many more countries. You pay a yearly membership of $25 to get invited to the sales, and there you find every antique tool you could imagine. here is a video I did a while ago at one of the national events. czcams.com/video/dGM-MFsDiZ0/video.html

    Is this likely to handle a chunky 3 inch walnut picture frame? Also, do you need to do a preceeding cut so the shear is only cutting off a thin sliver? Otherwise I'm guessing you get into a problem of internal tension building up within the offcut.

      @WoodByWright  Před 4 lety

      Yes for that you actually trim the ends of two boards and then check them against 90° square when you put them together. Then go back and adjust and do it again, You usually have to do it 5 to 10 times until you can dial it into exactly 90.
